It's the Small Things that Count...and are missing

  • A lot of people, including myself, have big hopes for this game and have been proposing big ideas that either won't make it into the game, or will take a long time to see. Which is understandable, but in the meantime, I think there are a lot of small things that are sorely missing in the game. I want to propose some ideas, most of which aren't uniquely my ideas, but even so I believe the more often something is said or supported the more likely Rare will notice.

    Birds that Can Perch:
So there are a couple birds in the game, but they're more of a signal than anything else. Parrots tell you "hey, there's an island here", seagulls tell you "hey here's something in the water", and bats tell you "hey, you're in a cave. Maybe with the exception of the bats, this doesn't do much to create an immersive living environment.

One thing I'd like to see is not only a larger variety of birds, but birds perched in trees or on rocks. For instance, I'd like to walk through a lush island with a chorus of different bird noises, and when someone fires a gun or enemies attack the birds would scatter creating an immersive and impressive effect. The same would go for riddles. It's cool when you walk up to a painting and trigger it, creating a gust of wind, but it would also be cool for any surrounding birds to scatter as well. This could also add to the effect of potentially being noticed by other players, creating a sense of potential urgency.

    Bare-knuckle Brawling:
If you want to have a non-lethal fight with your crew-mates or the occasional friendly stranger I think you should be able to hold down the Y button to bring up your fists. That's all I have to say about that.

    Fishing:
I'm definitely not the first to ask for fishing. It would be a nice option for passing time while sailing and having something else to do for the Merchant Alliance.

*Edit: fishing may be coming in the Forsake Shores update.

    Non Merchant Alliance Related Wildlife:
This is another topic others have talked about, but I just want to further reiterate something I'd like. Not only would it be more immersive to have more wildlife like iguanas, crabs, etc., but would also add to enemy types likes boars, saltwater crocks, and giant crabs. However, I think animal enemy types like those would only be aggressive if you got to close to them.

    Rowboats:
To be honest, I'm not sure how useful or desirable this would be, but I thought it would be neat to deploy a rowboat from your ship to potentially make traveling faster and to carry more items at once. I was at an island a while back that had water channels going through its caves and thought it would be picturesque rowing through it, but again, not sure how effective that would be.

*Edit: getting these with the Forsaken Shores update!

    More Dynamic Islands:
It would be nice if you could interact with more items on islands. For instance, there could be pulley-systems you could use to raise and lower yourself (especially on Thieves Haven), or drawbridges that can be raised or lowered either with a lever or maybe you have to shoot a target to lower. Perhaps hidden passageways that can opened with a concealed lever or button. Something to reward exploration or used to escape from a pursuing crew.

Those are just a few ideas. Let me know what small things you'd like to see added.

Below are a few links to threads discussing elements I believe should be added to the game. Let me know what you think!

  • Bare knuckle brawling.... i need it. More than any cosmetic. I have an annoying crewmate i roll with once in a while. It would be nice to have a drunken brawl on deck when we have no wind.

  • @nwo-azcrack
I totally agree with you I sail with my brother. He and I are the only ones that can put up with each other and he really needs to be punched in the nose once in awhile. 🤣

  • @shibby-544 i like the boxing idea

Two words. (At least for those of us from the N64 generation)

    "S******s only."

  • I second fishing. I would also like to see cooking of some sort that gives the player a temporary stat boost. Rare needs to make the world more engaging and they already have the assets to achieve this.

Exactly. It’s not more content in the form of cosmetics that we need. It’s more variety of things to do - new mechanics - more things to interact with.

When the world is 95% sea it is beggars belief that we only have shipwrecks in it to play with.

Fishing is so obvious. There needs to be some common sense applied here. We live in hope.

  • Fishing, or any other new activity better not affect rep in the existing factions. For those of us that already made legend it would not be fair to alter how rep is made in them. Anything new should have separate progression/reward systems.

  • @tyburn-ketch The current state of this game is a genuine bewilderment. When I played the beta the game was barren as in nothing really to do besides the mundane brainless questing they currently have. Most people were saying that there would be more to do when the game is released. But like most if not all betas have proven to me is that nothing really changes between Beta and release.

Now who thought that having a large world with nothing of significance would be a world in which gamers would be clamoring to be play needs to be smacked right across the face.

Who also thought that cosmetics should be the only incentive to engage in these W*F quests also needs to be smacked across the face.

A studio with such a large history should not have allowed Sea of Thieves to be released in its current state. There is less to do in this game than Final Fantasy XIV first release and that is an astounding feat.

  • @pure-rare You're also able to PM me :)

  • @shibby-544 I agree with all those things, yeah!

  • @menoob Stat boosts would have to be carefully applied, but could work. Eat a fish to breathe underwater for longer maybe? I feel there will have to be something added to make the upcoming underwater exploration easier.

People seem to think potions are coming, so maybe we'll have a Breath of the Wild cooking system? I love the cooking in that game, so I'd be well up for that. Assuming it didn't unbalance the game - but we're talking about resources everyone has equal access to, so that seems in keeping with the level playing field... maybe?

    Ah, so there it is.

    You've got buyer's remorse.

LOL. Gamepass. You should read up on it. :)

  • @personalc0ffee said in It's the Small Things that Count...and are missing:

@menoob I'm very well aware of the awesomeness that is Gamepass.

Then the notion of buyer's remorse is rather silly in context. :)

  • @personalc0ffee said in It's the Small Things that Count...and are missing:

@menoob You're still paying for it, though.

Yes and no. That's the beauty of Gamepass. There are many games on Gamepass that I will never play but, I have it for the games that I will play. The games that are no interest to me are of zero consequence. You don't get Gamepass for the games you are not interested in but for the ones you are.

Gamepass is not equal to buying a game.

  • @personalc0ffee said in It's the Small Things that Count...and are missing:

@menoob No, it will cost more in a year than if you bought the game outright.

Did you miss the part that I get Gamepass for other games? Who uses Gamepass for one game?
