Whirlpools can form in rougher seas, including storms.
- Ideally you want to spot the whirlpool and avoid it entirely
- Once caught in a whirlpool you need to steer out of it, using a combination of the whirlpool's momentum and the direction of the wind.
- Whirlpools in rough water cause no damage to the ship, but cause it to flood faster and faster as you approach the centre.
- Whirlpools in storms have the same effect, but are destructive enough to damage the ship.
- Whirlpools are large, and generally need someone in the crows nest to spot. But being large, they offer a good amount of time for escape.
- Whirlpools naturally turn the ship into their direction, making turning against it harder. This means you want someone on the wheel constantly, either feeding into the whirlpool to gain speed, or forcing the wheel against it when trying to reach an escape velocity.
- A whirlpool, while dangerous, also acts as a desperation move for escaping an enemy ship.
