Items and clothing pricing doesn't make sense

  • Ok, a little rant.
In short: I think items and clothes are overpriced, and not really well thought.

Longer explaination: I understand you only had so much time to design adjust and publish only 4 complete sets of skins, and that's kinda ok with me. What I think really shortens the lifespan of these items is that developers chose to price them equally, and at tires.
I think it's unrealistic and unfair that an elegant and refined Sovereign silk shirt costs as much as the Bilge Rat scrap of cloth resembling a t-shirt with a piece of rope.
It doesn't give me a sense of progression, but a sense of "ok I need to farm 13k gold to buy whatever jacket. Then another 30k if I want the same jacket in yellow".
I don't find it very satisfying, and this arrangement makes it so that I already bought a pair of pants, a jacket, and that's all the clothes I'll ever buy because I don't really like or want anything else. Maybe after I'll have bought a skin for my hull (and I'm 20k short) I'll buy a nice hook for my lady pirate and a peg leg, and the Seadog skins for my instruments and telescope (since the Merchant skin is so fat that the hand of my character completely collides inside of it and it's f***y).

I understand you aimed for a level playing field in which everyone that has a jacket, no matter the style, symbolizes a certain amount of experience, but I think it'd be much more fun and variegated if I could decide from the start if I want to put on a scrappy 250 golds shirt or save up naked to buy a finer and more elegant 3000k one.

Please, devs at Rare, once you'll have managed to solve glitches, bugs, and to obtain more servers from papa Bill, consider making a change in this system, because even though you aimed to have your backs covered in the first months while players level up slowly as you planned (since at level 23 a fort only made me level up 1 level and 1/4 with the traders), it feels unrewarding and already a little stale. Also imho the yellow versions of the items are the ugliest, most expensive recolors ever.

Thanks for listening if you made it this far. I hope someone in the devs team will read this.

  • why wear fake game cloths just run around naked, since the cloths don't add anything but looks, and not extra heath or armor whats the point.
(remember in minecraft when there was only a heath bar and not a armor bar, yeah SOT is like that right now, i bet they might ad that like a Oh we forgot that)

  • What you like is subjective. And maybe you don't like one thing, but someone else may. Making things gradually more expensive based on their perceptive fanciness or worth really just makes it to where most people wear the most expensive thing. (Because its a show off you have the most expensive stuff) By making everything fairly similarly priced, exempt some few things and likely reputation locked content, it's fine. This is so that nothing has artificial value over another, and people will be more likely to wear whatever.

The Black Dog Pack for example. It's nice, a quite ornate set. But ultimately it's value will degrade over time as pre-order players swap out for stuff they buy. Its a FREE item compared to a gold spent item, so it doesnt have any intrinsic value within it. Some will wear it in the future sure, but expect it to be less common than it would be were it in there purchasable with gold.

  • @ghost-0f-dawn That's exactly my point. Besides the fact that I go for looks over value, the whole point of items and clothing is to show off. So putting different prices on clothes would add more depth to it: I don't really feel a Sovereign if my golden cutlass costs as much as a piece of dented metal with a strap of cloth as a handle.

Besides, I don't really find a point, personally to buy Sea Rat clothing, since it symbolizes nothing except my personal taste. I think it'd be more interesting if I could choose to be stingy or wanted to disguise myself and buy and wear cheap clothing, instead of just strapping naked.

btw: I know tastes are subjective, that's why I put a bold IMHO before the only statement in which I expressed an opinion on the appearance of something.

  • I sort of agree that at the moment there is no system behind pricing. Fancy looking stuff is often have the same price as very basic one. The only justification I've came up with for myself is: many pirates might prefer simple comfortable clothes over anything else. And considering amount of drinking it might be that clothes are really not that important to them. :)

In any case, more clothing options would be nice and I am pretty sure people from Rare have some plans for that in the future, hopefully not only together with real money shop.
