I have a pretty great story I want to share about something awesome that happened in the game tonight.
Two friends and I jumped on a Galleon and headed towards a Skeleton Fort Raid. As we approached we saw a second ship already there and we got in a fight with them. They sunk us and we respawned back at an outpost. As we returned to the Skeleton Fort we noticed the guys who killed us leaving, but the Skull was still in the sky. We figured they'd given up because the fort was too difficult to take. So we pulled up and began firing on the towers, and 2 of us swam to the island.
About this time we noticed that the ship that had departed was anchored pretty far away, near an island... just waiting. Obviously, you know what they were waiting for. Unfortunately for them, they had turned off all of their lanterns, yet somehow forgot to turn off the back onw, which made them easy to notice at night.
Anyway, my 2 friends and I realized these guys were just gonna sit there and wait for us to finish the fort, for the skull to vanish, then return, kill us and take everything without doing any leg work. So we figured out a plan. After what had to be a half hour to 40 minutes, we defeated the fort and the Captain, and he dropped the key... and as expected, their boat began moving in.
If you've taken a fort you know the best item in there is the big chest with the bones on it. Whatever it's called. (The one item we wanted to guarantee we got). I grabbed the chest and put it on our ship and my friend took off sailing with it to an outpost.... And the boat followed. Our decoy to draw them away and fool them had worked. While they were chasing my friend all over in our Galleon with that one chest, my other friend and I were still at the Fort, removing every single item from the vault and hiding them in the various towers. In the event they found their way back, hopefully they'd find the vault empty and move on, not thinking to search up high.
So anyway my friend lured them to an outpost and he crashed the ship into the beach, grabbed the chest and turned it in as they pulled up beside our boat and began firing on it and boarding it. I can only imagine what they thought when they realized nothing was on it. They sunk our boat and killed my friend (which was part of the plan so we could get a new boat somewhere else and they'd lose track of him) and he started on his way back to the Skeleton Fort, which we had made sure to know the name of so he could find it again.
Well my other friend and I had just about finished cleaning out the vault and hiding everything, when my friend returning in the boat screamed "I'm being attacked by the kraken." It yanked the boat down with no problem since he was alone.... LOL.... Well anyway, he got yet another Galleon, returned to the Fort and we got every single treasure on it, and returned it all to an outpost. The decoy plan worked.
The guys never returned to the fort because we assume without the big skull in the sky they didn't know where it was. It's funny to think about what they must have been saying to each other when they realized nothing was on the ship they'd spent 15 minutes chasing. It's also funny to think that they literally just sat there for at least a half hour, waiting for us to finish the fort for nothing.
Pro-Tip.... next time you try to wait and steal someone's hard-earned rewards... make sure you turn your back lantern off.
