Naughty and Nautical: The Sea of Music

  • Ahoy!

One of the best parts of Sea of Thieves is the music. Be it that b****s E3 Trailer, the ambient music of the world, the triumphant sound as you hammer an enemy ship with cannonballs or the simple pleasure of playing your hurdy-gurdy as the ship goes down into the ocean's depths.

So my question is why stop at only two instruments? While I thought I'd seen other instruments in some early gameplay videos at the moment we have the ever faithful and b****s hurdy-gurdy and the good old squeeze box accordion. That being said if anyone ever listened to the soundtrack for Black Sails or Pirates of the Carribean theres plenty of more instruments to utilize. As such as either purchasable additions at launch (hey stranger things have happened!) or as content down the line I think there's a few instruments that it would be sinful not to include at some point.

    1. The Fiddle: Anyone who's listened to Maritime music knows the fiddle is an integral part of any good shanty about the sea. Of all the instruments on this list, the fiddle deserves a place in the game the most. Be it for it's potential for slow melodious songs played as a galleon sales into the night or for it's high paced madcap ditties the fiddle will remain a maritime mainstay.

    2. Guitar: Hey they've been around a long time in some shape or form. While the Hurdy Gurdy may have taken its place there is something about the picking of a guitar that stays with us all. While this instrument may not make it's way into the game anytime soon it'd be a worthy addition!

    3. Drums: Where's the percussion Rare? Drums were probably the first instrument we created after discovering the powers of the human voice after all. Besides what more pirate and nautical then beating the war drums while approaching an enemy ship at ramming speed! I'd be shocked if drums didn't make it into the crews' band sooner rather then later.

    4. The Pennywhistle: While wind instruments are awesome few made it into popular naval media that I know of. Except of course the pennywhistle. Beloved by sailors from the navy to piracy a cartoonishly large version of this would be an excellent choice to include in-game. Also for those planning on role-playing as the Royal Navy, this instrument will be a must-have.

    5. Spoons, Bones and the like: These are always fun to see played on the stree and were often used to accompnay a larger band. The animation team could have a lot of fun making this and players could have a lot of fun watching it.

    6. Shanties: This is one I hope to see happen organically. If I ever join a crew that starts singing 'Drunken Sailor', 'Roll the Woodpile Down' or 'Heave Away' I might just weep a little bit. The human voice is a beautiful thing and I challenge everyone to try using it while playing this game!

Regardless of if theres more instruments at launch I hope to see some truly amazing musical moments from the community! To break up the frequent ship battles when one sloop keeps sinking your galleon. ;)

Fair winds and words be with you all!

Some fun examples of what I'm talking about ;)

Drums, guitar, bones, hurdy-gurdy and the voice! Also if you're a pirate fan and have not watched this show fix this while you wait for Sea of Thieves!

Fiddles, voice and just some good fun!

  • As per this article on IGN:

"A few more instruments have been listed in addition to the beta's concertina and hurdy gurdy. Players can potentially look forward to having a strum on the banjo, ukulele and fiddle, as well as playing drums and a voice box."

In addition, in this Inn-side Story Robin Beanland talks about rhythm bones which helped him design the main theme to the game - another possible addition to in-game instruments? :D

  • Good Day!

Reading different forums and looking at the upcoming events, there was one thing that caught my eye that might include the expansion of new instruments. If other voyagers of the Sea of Thieves have been listening as well, you can read, "When considering what to add to our plans, we always consider how we can make the most impact on the following: Bringing players together in interesting ways, encouraging different types of player encounters." Them adding this information gives us clues on what might be coming up next. This could lead to the expansion of more instruments, as in that two galleons can form a band and each pirate having their own part to play.

But who knows, maybe their adding new emotes that can interact with others if done correctly.

May the tides by with you!
