Item Idea: Compass that points to the nearest ship

  • @thekitchner Watch the Inn-Side stories and they expressly mention seeing a ship is supposed to be significant and a sense of awe and excitement because you don't know if you will see someone. This type of mechanic completely ruins that.

    https://youtu.be/bJ25OF7f5us

  • @thekitchner If you don't like it, you could always quit and spawn on a new server.

  • @thekitchner it was the scale test. nobody knows how frequent other ships will be in the full game

It doesn't ruin that at all. They also don't say there shouldn't be an expectation to see ships like you suggested at all, they are already on the record as saying they want you to see a ship about every 30 minutes.

Telling me "why don't you quit and start a new server if there aren't enough people on yours" is a bit pointless. I'd be fine doing this, but since there's no way to tell how many people are in an instance then I wouldn't know whether I'm missing people due to bad luck or whether the instance is empty.

  • Also, if the server gets too low on population you migrate to another and a riddle/poem pops up on the screen.

Uhh we do because Rare literally said they want you to encounter a ship every 30 minutes. Sure this may change their mind, and there's a lot of carebears on this forum that would want them to, but so far they changed the mechanics to encourage more ship interactions, not less.

  • So if you are on a ship would it point to the one you are on, since that would be the nearest one.

  • @thekitchner it does ruin it if you know where a ship's location is. They specifically say in that video "Sometimes you will see nobody, sometimes you will see one ship, sometimes even two or more."
    It's supposed to be unpredictable.

I would also say if its been an hour, quit and restart.

  • i wouldn't say the nearest ship but just one random ship on the server. else it would be impossible to sneak up to someone. And the compass should have a cooldown, like 10 minutes.

But you don't know the ships location with a compass, you know its direction. That's a big difference.

If I'm on the very most Eastern side to the map I know if other players are on the server I need to sail west to find them. That doesn't "ruin" anything.

I mean it doesn't really make a difference to sneaking up on someone as it doesn't tell you the distance.

Say you're on a sloop on your own, and you can't see any ships around and you check your magic compass and it tells you there is one to the east. How does this change your approach? Are you never going to PvE unless you know the entire instance is empty? Of course not. You'll get off the island but keep an eye on the east only maybe, but then you risk a ship coming from the west that wasnt the closest when you looked at the compass. So really you'd have to just keep checking your compass and then looking in one direction, which is probably the same effort as looking in all directions every now and again which is what you'd need to do now.

  • @thekitchner no i just don't think it's a good idea, destroys the emersion. Like I said a random ship. Else you can just go and avoid every ship in the server.

  • @thekitchner looking just in one direction? Like i said it just destroys the whole "am I safe?" feeling, if you can just check you compass look in that direction and if you don't see anything know, ah ok i am safe.

  • @donpaul92 the developers want something like all 20-30 minutes

  • @thekitchner try to go near outposts, check them, a high chance that someone is near there

@thekitchner I think that would be a disaster. Instead of hunting for treasure people will constantly chase down other ships for it. SoT does have PvP elements but is based more on adventure and exploration rather than just fighting. And, you will get people that are trolls and just try to destroy other ships and constantly kill players. This would make adventure difficult because people will be constantly hunted down. When I played with my friends we got so excited and freaked out when we came across another ship, because it was surprising. But, intentionally knowing where a ship is or seeing one coming will ruin that excited feeling and feel more of a chore and a presence always making you fear the idea of adventure. This would also go against the pirate code, and yes I know that people fight anyways which is great but basing something on just attacking other players would not be fun. Now, a compass that leads to neat things like maybe a very expensive compass you can buy that leads you to Krakens for monster hunters or Shipwrecks would be neat.

Excellent post and I'll agree, I would not want to see this sort of item in game. Rare have tweaked visibility and experimented with other ways to increase ship detection but have always said that their intention is for ship encounters to be an occasion rather than a frequent occurrence.

Sea of Thieves is a Shared World Adventure Game, which encompasses a range of playstyles and opportunities.

  • Don't understand the logic behind this. Compasses point North and are used for navigation in Sea of Thieves.

Having them point at ships would just encourage players to attack each other even more. It would become too easy to find players that are trying to avoid combat.

  • This was cause more problems than it is worth - and ultimately there is an entire thread devoted to this - but we should have nothing that encourages PvP or promotes it.

This is not a PvP game -its PvPvE and at the moment, perfectly balanced. Yes shooting and looting ships is fun, it can be rewarding, however give a tool that will enable PvP to happen more frequently? It would seriously upset the balance of the game - ships would constantly be hunted, battles would be more frequent and as a result the PvE side of things will not be getting done... meaning all shooting and no looting.

In any case... if you have a compass they do too, so by all means you as a PvP'er may look at the compass and think "yeah a ship in that direction... off we go" and they as PvE'ers are thinking "uhoh, a ship over there... lets go the opposite direction - ultimately balancing out what you are trying to achieve anyway.

Many people already spend all their time hunting down other ships. Not only have I done it in every alpha, beta or scale test I've been in, but it's my plan to do it afterwards too.

As already explained I can already sail around the outposts looking for ships, all this item would do is prevent you sailing around in circles for ages because it turns out theres only one person on the instance or all of the other ships are in one place on the edge of the map.

  • @thekitchner Then keep searching for outposts and sailing around. That is how the game is supposed to be played if you are searching for other ships. You're not supposed to know if or when you will encounter another ship. An item like this would give you an unfair edge and would break down other aspects of game playstyle. Some people won't want to be found and it is their play right to avoid you.

  • No thankyou, just sail and keep an eye out.it would also be easy for other ships that dont want to fight to avoid you.

  • We should add a GPS and a Radar while we are on it. To make hunting and killing easier...

  • I don't like this idea... at all. Please, do not add this item.

  • I think this is a lame way to kill a great game.

Article 4 requires me to leave it at that.

  • If anything I would prefer a bounty if you sink X amount of ships or you are carrying an insane amount of booty. Because lets be honest if you have an insane amount of booty then your a risk taker and can handle people looking for you.

  • @thekitchner said in Item Idea: Compass that points to the nearest ship:

So I was watching Pirates of the Caribbean the other night (let's face it a lot of us are looking for ways to scratch that SoT itch) and I was thinking about Jack's compass. One of the reasons he basically just seemingly randomly gets into adventures was because of his compass so I thought to myself: Could a magic compass of some sort work in SoT? How would it know what I want it to point to?

At first I thought treasure, but then I thought most treasure etc will be on voyages etc so that won't really work.

Then I thought about the fact the other night me and my friends really wanted to PvP some ships, but we sailed around for an hour unable to see anyone, possibly because of server issues.

So then I thought, what if there was a compass that points to the nearest ship? If there are no ships on your instance, the compass spins.

Obviously this is of use to PvP players, but it is also useful to people looking to avoid combat. Due to the fact that you can see ships quite far away, it's basically only really useful to people who can't see any ship near them.

Personally I'd love this item, what do the rest of you think?

I love the idea, I think it should be a specialty item, like a very very rare thing to get, something yo have to earn through doing lots of successful pvp encounters amidst other things. I would not like to see such witchcraft fall into the wrong hands but perhaps....they could make one o these evil compasses exist as an item that you can carry and drop? So that it changes hands? Something you have to pop down somewhere so that it can be nabbed.

About scratching the Pirate itch: Black Sails. 4 seasons of Pirate Heaven.

  • How about we we reverse the idea? You can get a Magic Lantern or a flare gun that lets everyone in your instance know exactly where your ship is at all times.

That way no one who is trying to be stealthy has their play ruined, but you can get swarmed to your heart's content.

  • @dragotech123 But a GPS would make it so much more fun, I mean have you seen how difficult it is to keep track of where to go?

So you think Pirates would stop your ship and be like, "Hey mate, it be really cool, if you like give us half your lewt... and in exchange we will be cool and let you get to your destination, yarrr"

    Maybe in your dimension...

One of the things that is pretty cool in this game is PVP if you want the Carebear version then go play with Sid Meier's Pirates! Just because you don't like PvP doesnt mean other people dont enjoy it...

I think @TheKitchner idea makes perfect sense now, will make it easier to track pirates like you down and take you down quicker.

  • @thekitchner You ask what the rest of us think, then proceed to tear apart what anyone says in objection to your idea. NO! This is NOT a good idea. Hunting down ships SHOULD be a challenge, not so simple as just following the damn compass! Some players are honestly trying to complete their voyages and the adage of this instrument would completely RUIN any aspect of the game other than PvP.
    CHEERS!
