Okay , lets be honest - How far do you think sea of thieves will last?

  • Dont get me wrong, i love this game , i play with my friend and its fun we doin voyages , buying all the skins , killing sloops and galleons , looking for new things on the map but you know , at some point it just feels like theres nothing to do....

i mean , there is no competition which adds a bit of spice to the game , no boat upgrades , real proggresion - which i think its necessary even if rare doesn't , no new weapons and new tools , new skins , new kind of voyages , world is the same over and over again which ruins the fun of doing a voyage , you just instantly know what to do..

again , you might say "yo chill dude its just beta" and stuffs like that , now i get that , but i dont see all of these things added to the game in 25 days.
this is way too much stuff to code and make and the team is lacking behind , this game has a potential to be the best game in 2018 , and im not even kiddin , but wake up rare , people here tell you the same story again and again and what they want to see in the game and you just do nothing with it? from the last test scale to this one , the change was indeed nice , but not massive.

now if you want a rewind on what people wants to see in the game there it is:

    1. More tools (Grappling hooks , New music instruments , flare guns etc..)

    2. Bigger map / random islands generator - map is huge dont get me wrong but it could be increased.

    3. new guns - this is a bit tricky but some people asked for it in the past

    4. More skins - i get that whole bilge rat and admiral sets , its cool and fun to collect , but i bet that in 1 week you can get all the skins for clothing + guns

    5. HARDER VOYAGES - voyages are easy , i want to be stuck on a voyage for like 30 minutes to an hour just to hope to get a chest that will bring me more than 100 gold.

    6. Gold is too easy to make , nope , you just have to do something with that , i have no more words for it , just change it , i dont care what u do , change it.

    7. Competition - add some competition between teams , so the road to the chest would be full of passion and youll meet many enemies on the way that do the same thing as you , only the first one will get the chest.
Its so easy to make a competition , just when 2 boats or more sign for a competition voyage they will all get a message that Competition is on , they will get a list of items from different islands to collect and when they bring the items to an island in front of a statue and play a melody together they will get the next clue - you see what im talking about? some hard stuff , but the gold at the end will be so rewarding. which solves problem 6.

    8. Disconnection problems - i just cant with cyanbeard , copperbeard , all of dem , my friend doesnt get it and i do every 30 min? it makes me rage so hard.

there are many more that i didnt mention and i can go on and on , which leads me to a serious question "how far do you think the content will last?"
i know that you can do many stuff , but it would get boring as the time passes by day after day.
and 60$ isnt a risk im willing to take for a 1 month content im sorry but i know that some of you will agree and some wont.

I wanna hear your opinion on these problems and if you think they will be fixed
and i wanna see if you agree with me about how much time the content will last till people will start quitting.

  • If I had to bet, they aren't gambling the release content holding attention for a long time. I'm sure they have things in the works to draw more attention back to the game as people start getting bored. I'd be surprised if it wasn't updated to keep people entertained.

  • @zalavaaris but again , its a gamble from us to put 60$ on the table in order to have fun later on , if we could know how the end result would have been we could sit back and say , you know what , ill put 60$ for it , but atm they released nothin about the end game and how it will look , and if what they said on the feb 13 would be the end game , then its looking bad for that amount of money , and it wont last more than 2-3 months.
theres a huge potential miss here

  • Years. Game will only improve as time goes on, mechanics and additions will only improve the fun factor we already receive.

If NMS can still churn out content updates and improve, SoT will do just fine.

Alot of your points also imply that Rare doesn't have anything but what we've already seen ready for launch, and that to have anything new in 20 some-odd days would be miraculous. I just need to state how silly it is thinking that anything else Rare has mentioned for release, and onward is being coded and worked on starting just now.

Of course they're waiting for release to give us many of the other things (outfits, weapon skins, trade companies) so we have more to see on launch. These arent CoD "betas" where you're playing full content to get hype up a week before launch.

  • @grim-davy-jones Stress tests are not a good representation of the final product... And content should come quickly after release...🙂

  • link text you realize the build we are playing is behind because its the beta one right

  • @grim-davy-jones You may want to keep an eye out for a future announcement on the LIVE Q&A on release content.

@joeninetee said in Monthly Insider Report - January 2018 (and yes, it's late, sorry):

    Road to launch & beyond
As we head towards launch, we know one of the key questions people have is what is the game content on day 1. We have spoken about this a lot with press during the studio visit, but we want to give our core community one place to find all this information, and an opportunity to ask us questions. With this in mind, we’re planning another stream from Rare where we will talk about exactly what you can expect to be playing at launch, sometime in early March. As before, we plan to have a live Q&A section in the stream.
As we head towards launch, our focus has begun to shift to how we operate during the live period. At launch and in the window beyond, we have purposefully left space in our roadmap for listening to and reacting to feedback from our players. We will be open and transparent about the top feedback points, and what work we’re taking against them.
Alongside this though, we will also have people working on what is to come. We’ve spent quite a bit of time recently thinking about the best way to talk about this, whilst still retaining some mystery so we can surprise everyone with new unexpected features. We’ll have more to share on this as we get closer to launch.

  • @grim-davy-jones you can pay 10 and try it out for a month FYI

  • Patience, lad.

You're merely getting a glimpse of what's to be released, which is likely a glimpse of what the game will grow to be. :)

This is like watching the Lord of the Rings trailer and saying "Well, that was short..."

  • @grankor Maybe , but i thing that even on the scale test they should make the game promising , i want to play the test and be a 100% sure im spending 60$ on it cause i know it will last long and it will bring a lot of content , and when im hesitating the game after the test server with new stuff in it , it kinda scares me , makes me question the pre order , i think ill keep it... cause i trust most of you guys , but im really confused at this point.

@ic-fanatic I knew someone would've said that , and u prolly didnt read my post , i said i like the game but so much things are missing even on the stress test , plus i said , that i know that its beta but that doesnt mean it should make us hesitate the game , it should make us feel like , hell yea im buying this game forsho and not "you know what maybe ill take back my preorder"
    you get my mindset?

@musicmee Okay , and what if half of these things wont happen? its like a huge disappointment , btw all of these Q&A's never include the best questions , idk who [mod removed] is in charge of the questions that are being asked in the interview cause most of the questions are things that are obvious and not the questions as ive written above (all those problems)

@donpaul92 Not exactly , ive read all the articles , all the interviews that were on feb 13 , they all said the same which was only half promising...

  • I think it will probably run strong for at least 3 months thats when they start adding/updating stuff. Pretty smart timing because a lot of games seem to lose momentum by then. Some people by then might make a judgement about just what the end game content is. For diehards and hardcorers of this game I can see them playing for years, whether it is going to hold the attention of casual players remains to be seen.

  • Well people still play the original CoD and AoE etc and those games are ancient with basically no content past what youve learned the first few days so i can see this game lasting for years and years just as is.
It may not have millions of players but for people who enjoy it for what it is it has playability for a long time.
I really think the core players for this game who keeps it going will be guys and girls like me and my friends.
People who work full time+ jobs and have all the responsibility of being adults etc, and just want something they can jump in with friend or alone and pew pew a few hours and then log off.

  • Why do people keep assuming what they see is what they get? Watch the videos that Rare has put out. Read the news articles. There is so much in this game that isn't in the scale test and content that hasn't even been revealed by Rare. Come on people, stop assuming and wanting this game to fail so hard and just enjoy what we've been given at the moment.

  • @misterdoomed Pubg for example lasted a long time , cause they realized what people wants and they executed it perfectly but it got old after an year? or maybe less idk , but anyways i dont want this game to turn into these old games that just a few veterans play , this can be the next pubg this is a type of game that the community wants , and rare had done a perfect job so far but dont let it fool you , a lot is missing , and i dont see any huge things changing soon , i just wish we could know more about how the finished game would've looked like before we put 60 bucks in it.

@shaggiedo yea i can see your point , we'll see indeed.

  • @grim-davy-jones just because something isn’t in a beta, what makes you think it isn’t held back, ready to be added day one

  • @psych0-knightro You clearly didnt read what i wrote in the comments , i read all the articles that released after the feb 13 interviews , and i still question this over and over again , i know many things are about to come , but some of the things are confirmed not to be changed , and im pretty sure they wont extend the map for example cause they are sure that its enough , you know what so maybe it is enough but at least add a variety of maps lets say 5 maps which takes a lot of work but youll be able to play a different one every time , the chances of you remembering all the maps perfectly is just impossible

  • @dark-shadow9056 some of the things ive been written up there have been confirmed to not be added like proggresion if u read the articles of the interviews after feb 13 and extended map im sure they wont add it cause they think the map is big enough , which i get that , but at least add more maps so when you queue theres a chance to be in a different map - now maybe its an idea but idk , maybe i rush things.
i can see your point and i appreciate your comment but its just so confusing this whole situation , from one hand i love the game , its fun and all of that
and from the other hand it can get boring sometimes and when you think for the long term you are kinda being hopeless about it

  • @grim-davy-jones
I gotcha. Im just saying it will last a long time because of the core it will attract and it will be more than a few vets.
It will have big ebbs and flows like any game and when new content comes out tons will flood back till they burn through it then log off but in between updates the core will keep it popular enough to keep getting the updates some players need to come back.
I think the only people who are disappointed or get bored and quit with this game will be people expecting a totally different game than what is intended. Like some think it should be a mmorpg with a deep story and tons of levels etc and some just want another battle royal with constant pvp.
The truth is ( in my eyes) is this game is neither of those so im not disappointed in it at all.

  • @grim-davy-jones

Not sure if your aware but the devs run a fully loaded server that they test more content on regularly. This isn't an open server like the beta or stress tests but one for them to play with. This seperate build of the game is what is set for launch and content / feedback from the betas and tests help align that content awaiting release.
As more content is set for the major update in 3 month post launch it's possible that we could see a game that is very different to right now within a short time frame.

What I'm trying to say (in a poor way as I'm tired) is that this content has already been built and is just fine tweaking prior to launch.

  • @grim-davy-jones I was referring to when you said “I don’t think all those thinks can be added in 25 Days”.

  • Honestly, I don't think it will last long. It has some serious problems.

    1. The game is heavily communication based. There's really no place in the game for people without mics and most people hate playing with mics because of toxic people. On xbox almost nobody plays with mics.

    2. It's heavily multiplayer based. Not much room for solo players so that audience is going to dry up quick. About 1/3 of the beta players were solo.

--The above 2 points are fundamental to the game and will severely limit the people who will stick with it.

    1. The game is essentially a slow paced FPS with only a couple "Maps" (Ships). You also only get 5 shots and then it becomes a melee FPS lol. This becomes apparent after playing it for a bit as you are doing the same little battle routine over and over.

    2. Cross play creates an unfair playing ground for console players who are going to blame all their loses on that imbalance. You'll also probably see PC groups not wanting xbox players in their group creating more strife (See #5). Oh, you're on xbox? Put em in the brig lol! No mic? Put em in the brig!

    3. This game is going to be toxic as hell. Slow paced FPS prolongs your deaths (As opposed to a FPS like COD where you die quick and respawn 2 sec later) leading to enhanced frustration, mics required so people will trash talk and you can't really go without a mic, imbalanced cross play... I predict the highest levels of anger and toxicity we've seen in a game ever.

    4. Somewhat pointless gameplay. You get gold so you can buy cosmetics, but you are stuck with the god awful Infinite Pirate Generator that sticks you with an awful looking avatar that you don't even want to look at in the first place. Why would I even want gold? You (Fortunately) can't even see your character most of the time and she's so ugly and deformed looking that no amount of cosmetics are going to fix it. So, why am I collecting chests again?

-- The game is pretty fun to watch though.

  • Yall need to chill honestly , i said i love the game , its just a discussion dont shred me here , i just wanna hear your opinion and not how weird and stupid i am in your opinion , it doesnt help to me nor to you. keep it clean

@misterdoomed im not either im saying that if some of these things wont be added ever this would be dissapointing ...

@laughsmaniacaly i just doubt how much of a BOOM they can bring in such a short time , i know there will be so many new stuffs but like , i just doubt it would be like twice as the content now u get me?
i appreciate your comment , ty for your opinion. Read the BOLD paragraph ive written up there

@drbullhammer its absurd to assume? no. its called assumption and im able to say the game will last 1 minute , or 1 year , your opinion on my assumption doesnt matter , i just want to hear your assumptions as i said , plus idk how much of a HUGE change can happen ,even if they hold files back there , they should at least give us a better tease than this scale test which was a bit disappointing , doesnt matter if players got 100 hours , its the starting hype and i have it too , dont get me wrong read the Bold paragraph above in this comment , i love the game and idk if ill cancel my pre order i just want to hear the community a bit , feel other mindsets on the game , get me fam? :D

@flowerofcarnage yea , u mentioned some good points , again im hopeful for this game , i just hope they wont ruin it , and they will execute it right u feel me? cause they can find a solution for everything , its just the matter of creativity and listening to the community.

  • @grim-davy-jones

I meant no ill will and apologise if anything offended, my statement was mearly intended to state that there is more comming but i agree, it'd be nice to know if what we've seen is 20, 30, 80% of release date content.

  • No one i dont think, including rare, know what the point or end game is. The answer is always avoided when the question is raised from the interviews Ive seen. Get gold for a new hat ... whoopee.

What made them think no progression (apart from buying things to make everything you already have look a bit different) was a good end game.

People keep saying there will be this secret stuff that no one knows about which will be added at launch. By now just before a game comes out you get a good idea of what youre buying from trailers and press releases etc, this looks the same as the footage we were shown at an E3 demo years ago

This is what we are getting, whats in the scale test, some animals kicking around and 2 extra traders. Oh, and some other skins.

  • I think it will last years.
I would bet they have a rough timeline of content releases planned, it's probably not set in stone because as the top players finish all available content and start to lose interest they can just add some more to keep everyone interested.

  • I believe it will still have a meaningful player base throughout the next Battlefield/COD cycle.

  • Just because it isn’t talked about, doesn’t mean it isn’t there mate.

They have loads of things that they haven’t discussed with the public; and behind those doors- not even pioneers and Founders can see.

The reason why they have such a high number when it comes to alpha population is for server strenuization- they also- are servicing the public- and what they can know, and what they can’t know.

Upon release; knowledge gained by the public is extremely important- especially for a game that has such a huge potential (like you said), and they are well aware of the greatness that they are unleashing to us, and with that they are also....
Very... Humble.... (thank you again Rare)

For us founders, and those whom have been with the Alpha, for so long now... beg for new features to be released to us, for us to test, because we want “More”; naturally by human nature. What comes with human nature, as funny as it may sound, comes withdraw- and-or “Impending expectancy”, because they aren’t sharing the “goods”, we make claim to them slacking, falling behind, changing direction.

If we, as Founders knew everything there is to know about what is to come March 20th, and beyond, then what really “exploration” would we have left? We’d know every nook and cran’y of the game and it’s mechanics, and we would surely become bored not long after launch because now- there truely would be nothing new.

In these final days of the long, treacherous wait for launch, we have to give them the help they need, not ask more from them. In the beginning, and in the end, the reason why we are here is to help them work on the things that they find as a priority- and we must trust their judgement beyond those barriers where the fog begins. We are in this for Free, we are playing their game for Free, if we learned everything there is to learn for Free, then what’s the point in selling the game; when now they are making no profit from their hard work.

If there is one thing @Grim-Davy-Jones, that I ask from you (other than my freedom on the high sea’s as an immortal) is that you help us keep this game alive and going, and to not have the thought of fault due to what we aren’t receiving in the Beta.

Your Kraken is Coming, he who defies the Devil himself. Find patience.

  • @cappjacksparrow im sorry , but i just cant stop reading this comment with jack's voice and its cracking me up asf , anyways well said , again , u fkin think im like the most toxic dude ever , i just said that im a little afraid of whats coming , because they release little to nothin to the public and it makes me hesitate about the future of the game , i do believe this game is currently the best in the era of gaming but they MUST execute it right , the fact that a lot of people played the game and got hyped doesnt mean its perfect , im still looking forward into Q&A's More detailed Articles and Information about the future updates , hope it will give me some confidence in Rare.

  • @grim-davy-jones
This isn't the full game dude. I know you get that. But they don't really need to code huge amounts of things in the next 25 days. The betas are just a little chunk of everything they've already made.

But in my opinion the games longevity all depends on them not going crazy with Micro-transactions and providing steady and substantial content releases.

  • @Grim-Davy-Jones Do Not! I actually have a lot of faith in your judgement based on the things you’ve expressed in these forums and hope to sail with you one day. I’m just attempting to.... provide thine lassy’ of a squidface with reassurance. A lot of the points you made are justifiable, it’s just always wise to keep a sense of Optimisim.

It’s never wise to let the swift glance of failure sail full-mast through one’s confidence.
Most of these newcomers are Toxic- as much of a rivalry we have m8, I just don’t want you to be one of them.

  • @grim-davy-jones well I guess it depends on how much your money and perceived value is. I think if I get 20ish hours out of this game it's worth my 60 bucks. 3 dollars an hour is fine for my value of entertainment. I can't see myself NOT playing it for at least that long. Anything past that is a great bonus. And remember, you asked how long and how far we think it will last. With the content additions over time I feel it will be well worth it. But that's just one guys opinion.

  • @grim-davy-jones i imagine the launch content will last about 3-4 months for the hardcore fans of this game, which is when rare will try, and maybe even succeed in releasing their planned free dlc

  • The content you see is only a little sip of the grog so to speak. There is a big amount of content ready to be dropped in on launch. As for the first second & third major updates I bet this game will quickly sail into the game of the year ranks.

Don’t assume this is everything and the game will have a short life... I can assure you this game will out live most!

  • this game will last as long as people are willing to accept any changes rare makes, all i see alot of is stop complaining this is rares vision it is theyre game they make the choices deal with it, but are these same people that say that now going to accept any changes rare makes in what 3-6-12 months who knows. this game will be driven by 1 thing numbers.

or to put it another way what do you want 30k people buying real money cosmetics or 100k doing it, its a business afterall

i dont know what the budget was for this game, but say 500k people buy this game (going by the scale test that reached the 300k limit iirc) so 500,000 x 50 thats 25million, but not all 500k players are paying full price for the game some are getting the game for free with the xbox game pass (most of the money for that goes to MS itself)

so if cosmetics come out and say 10% of that 500k (50k) spend on average 5 bucks on cosmetics a month ($250,000), you have to look at it and decide ok do we try to appeal more and get them to spend 10 bucks a month ($500,000) or do we change things slightly and get that 10%(50k players) to maybe 30%(150k players) spending 5-7 bucks a month ($750,000-$1,050,000)
that extra 20% can be done in 2 ways, getting players to come back (every game has a down turn in active players after a couple of months)or appeal 2 new players with incentives to try it which could lead to decisions people dont like thus coming back to the rares vison can changes when they decide it

as long as said people are willing to accept any new changes the game could last a long time

i dont know the actual numbers but this is just an example
