Give People something to play for - player housing/safezone

  • Everyone is saying that the biggest issue with the game is that theres no reason to get as much gold as possible after a certain point. I agree, and I think a great way to fix this would be player housing. Make everything crazy expensive, so once you have your outfit and other ship cosmetics you still have something to play for.

Make it an instanced area that you have to sail off the map a certain direction to enter, you park your boat in front of your beachfront property like some sort of Miami style neighborhood. This could be the safe zone everyone wants and you can meet people in town and show them your house and all the cool trophies and decorations you have worked hard for.

  • I don't think this will ever happen. Instanced housing such as the housing from Lord of the Rings Online and Runescape was always pretty dead, while actual housing in games such as ArchAge wouldn't work in SoT with multiple servers.

  • Not bashing your idea but why make it super expensive? I mean once the power creep is finished veterans will have unlimited funds so price wont matter and it will only hurt new players.
Also if its instance zone what is the point of it ? Only you can see it or maybe a friend and it will always be empty because server size is limited in numbers. It would basically be just another cosmetic upgrade that only you see.
The ONLY way i see player housing even be a possibility is if people get the seperate staging area for social stuff only and making that area the player housing and social park.....still i dont know if it would be worthwhile.

  • I think the outposts should be armed, and a Safe Zone if you attack anyone there they fire on you. keep players from sitting there stealing chests before you can turn them in. would like to see NPC merchant ships to attack, and Maybe a Navy Vessel that will go after you if to close.

  • Or, people could play for... fun?

  • @erikinthebakery
Aye, it be true that there’s no life quite like that of a pirate ;)

  • /sarcasm on

@erikinthebakery FUN?!?! W*F is the point of that. Next you'll be wanting me to talk to new and exciting people, making friends to and fro across the globe, creating stories within the game to increase my own personal pirate lore, when will it end?!? Goodness gracious me, I paid $60 for this game and I want the onus for every single one of my good experiences and material gains to be placed on the developers.

    /sarcasm off

  • Player housing is a coding sink which only a fraction of a MMORPG playerbase uses. Moreover, SoT is not identified as an MMO/MMORPG so I don't think player housing is worth having in this game (SoT).

I used to play Lord of the Rings Online/LoTRO, and when its original developer added player housing, the player housing instances were literal "ghost towns" within just a few months of introduction. Hence, MMO player statistics prove in-game player housing is a pseudo-waste of coding time let alone coding upkeep time.

In the end, SoT is (thus far) a very basic FPS PvP game so I doubt they will invest any development/coding time to player housing considering they do not consider their game (nor do they code their game) to be an MMO.

    Just food for thought.

  • Honestly it won't change anything. Everyone will complain regardless if there is something 'expensive' to obtain or not. This is because at some point, the content runs out, like in MMO's. You shouldn't play the game because there is always something to strive for, you should play it for what it is and the fun you have doing it. Adding more 'cosmetic' random junk you can spend money on just so it can be instanced and not seen by anyone, unless there is a friend or public mode to toggle or whatever, won't calm people down.

At some point game content will end, and the game will get a little stale, but that is what content patches and expansions are for.

  • So you want the game to make you do busy work so you can watch a number on the screen go up? Might be more liberating to just not give a c**p about materialism. The Buddhists have this whole thing about that. The ultimate irony being that the object of your materialism isn't material.

  • It's a good concept but honestly, it won't work. It would ruin and change the whole playstyle of the game.

  • The only way i would see this working is if there was mayor ports around the world with instance housing like say GTA online.
