Why cosmetics being the only reward in a social game is okay

  • I see a lot of posts voicing their opinion about cosmetics not being enough for this game to last. Se here is mine. This game is a social experiment, almost like being back in high school again where your "cred" was mostly determined by the clothes you wore, your number of friends, how cool your headphones were, and who you sat with at lunch. In reality most MMO's are just that. The minute you enter a game you gawk over the lvl 158 guy with armor that you swear shines like the sun is always hitting it in the right spot and a sword that's as big as his entire body. and you immediately want to grind and do everything to become "THAT GUY"! If this game can fill itself with rare skins for your boat/gun/items. And if it can give you a coat that makes you feel as cool as Blackbeard himself. When you walk into an outpost, or take over someones ship and someone sees you and goes, dang he looks cool, is that enough? For me yes. Let me find some exotic bird to put on my shoulder, a crab arm instead of a hook because I killed the giant crab of the sea. Let me gamble with strangers at an outpost and put down the biggest amount of gold that anyone has ever seen and let them think that I am the richest pirate at sea, when really I'm just hoping I can double my entire saving to get a bad a*s looking mast design. This game can last, and be fulfilling. It just has to continue to make me feel as cool as I want to feel, living in a fantasy world where some how I can be a pirate. Feeling isn't always necessary to becoming the toughest pirate at sea. I mean, the jock was never always the most popular kid in high school, remember?

  • I just want more ships and true customization for them. Battering rams, chase cannon, armor plating, all with pros and cons. I don't care if you start with them all for free or if you have to unlock them.

  • Totally agree. Buffs and debuffs aren't needed. Hell, look at stuff like TF2 and Overwatch. Everything there is cosmetic. Remember when hats were introduced into TF2. People lost their damn minds! Gun skins in CS:GO people go crazy over and they do nothing but makes your gun look like it's made out of some magical neon pink metal or something... Pure cosmetics is super fine and has been shown to work perfectly fine with other games. Not sure why people are losing their minds over this for SoT...

  • it is subjective for which cosmetics are coolest so yea.

  • @hyr0-the-pyr0 Those are arena shooters, big difference. Also sea of thieves is like a game we have never seen before its an FPS/MMO/Adventure. So you cant really compare them

  • Can we gamble at Outposts with random players? Is it officially confirmed?

    I hope yes :)

  • @shoddyagenda881 I wasn't comparing the gameplay, I was saying other games have had cosmetic only upgrades and been just fine. There's no reason why that can't be the case for SoT.

  • @hyr0-the-pyr0 GamePlay and progression go hand in hand. So in an RPG you would have a level system where you get more health and do more damage. But in a FPS you wouldnt have progression like this.

  • Except... it's not a social game (outside of your own crew ofc).

  • Bottom line is that games are intended to be fun. If all you see in a game is artificial stat progression and you don't actually enjoy playing it for the gameplay then what is the point.... You probably don't truly like games if this is the mentality you hold.

Games should be fun because they are fun to play, not because it gives you a false sense of accomplishment.

I understand this way of thinking is hard for many to grasp especially for younger players. Believe me it is false accomplishment... It's really just a game and no one cares how supposedly good you are at and how much you've done in it.

Cosmetic and quest progression is sufficient for this game.

  • @khaleesibot

  • Social game????????????

  • Possible add on's that would be cool.
Customisable colour's for cannons, Flag/sail Customisation, potions to throw at people that change the way they look however you can imagine so maybe gender potions or weight/height potions +/- etc...
Fishing and a record book for biggest and rarest fish caught. your own docks to build ships. A pirate ship that is owned by npc's that sails the oceans and is quite powerfull. The Bloody Thorn. A nametag like numberplate on the back of your ship with your own personal ship name. Monkeys that steal your banana's. Marriage between players. Just little things like this will give the game so much more excitement, but the content already seen is amazing!!! Apologies if some of this content is already in game, I do not know, couldn't access computer for ages.

  • Except in PvP type games, you can CHOOSE how to fight. Guy with bombs? Person who snipes? Big beefy person? Melee oriented? etc etc.

Everyone in this game is the same copy paste clone, same for the ships. I am hoping for customization.

  • @eyesodd I think there needs to be some clarity between cosmetics and functional upgrades. Because you can buy yourself some, arguably, better gear in the current game. And this functionally different gear will ultimately expand into the live release, and most likely spread its way into ship customization as well as character progression.

For some more detail on what I am talking about, take the Flint Lock Pistol as an example, it is not as accurate as the Eye of Reach. And the Blunderbuss, is obviously better than the Eye of Reach up close. These types of items will likely be expanded upon with new weapons and new gear, each having their own pros/cons. Basically they have a situational advantage in a fight.

Another thing to take note of, is you will likely not simply start with all these weapons straight away, it is likely you will have to purchase or find them to acquire them. Just like we have to purchase the Blunderbuss now (since it has been adequately tested). Even though all of these will be accessible to all players, their might certainly be different looking types of these weapons out there. Of course these will not give you an advantage, they will just look different than the base items.

I imagine we will see things like the Rapier and possibly a Harpoon or Spear. And we will likely see larger sails and possibly different hulls, for our ships.

  • @eyesodd I have to agree with you here. I don't see a reason for "stat-ed" gear. I like that I am not worried about my characters stats. The only "numbers" I need is how much gold I have, and an ammo count.

  • @wolff34 Im more of a only where my Pantaloons kinda pirate myself! All those fancy clothes are overated! Nothing screams run then being chased by a naked pirate with a blunderbuss! XD
