Hourglass Matchmaking Needs to Be Fairer

  • I have been playing Hourglass battles with a friend for quite a long time. I am already a relatively high-level player, but I am currently helping my friend level up and gain more experience.

The problem is that progressing through wins feels almost impossible. We are constantly matched against crews that are clearly much more experienced and skilled than us. Many matches feel completely one-sided, and we barely have a realistic opportunity to win or even learn from the battle.

I understand that Hourglass is a competitive mode and that losing is part of the experience. However, there is a difference between losing a close and competitive match and being repeatedly matched against players who are far beyond your skill level.

This is extremely frustrating, especially for newer or less experienced players who are trying to improve. If players are constantly destroyed without having a chance to compete, many of them will simply stop playing the mode, which only makes the matchmaking situation worse.

I think Hourglass would benefit greatly from a fairer skill-based matchmaking system. Matches should be challenging, but crews should generally be paired against opponents with a similar level of experience and ability.

I would personally be willing to wait a little longer in the matchmaking queue if it meant getting a more balanced and enjoyable battle.

Has anyone else had the same experience with Hourglass matchmaking?

  • 2 things:

Have your friend try to host the boat since the matches should be registered in their SBMM. It does exist; it just throws it in favour of finding a match faster.

The second is that SBMM used to be a LOT tighter, and players would end up waiting HOURS for matches. It's a fair request, but unfortunately the mode and its low numbers do not support it. A solution might be to try turning on cross-region matchmaking

  • I HG a lot because I'm working on getting to 1000. But I get really good pvpers and some that are obviously new players or new to HG. Both work because the new players let me work on my boarding and the better players help me work on boarding, helm and cannons. I guess I use both to just get better at pvp. BUT that being said, I'd rather faster queues than worry about the level of the players.

  • @forcegrogu Somethings changed since blige rat weekenders, we just went on a 20 loss streak and all over 1k ally, never getting anyone close to our level its beyond dumb and most of us are stopping and playing other games till they fix what they've now broke that wasnt broken before

    1. hourglass isn’t a mode as many keep trying to say it is.

It’s a tool, for pvp. You find a pvp match in the open world and that is all. Skillful or not, it the same as finding a random player on the open sea and battling. Outcome happens depending on who you fight. Good or bad

    1. All is fair. With how hourglass works atm. You be waiting a very long time to find that perfect “skill” lvl that matches yours. Which is near impossible to calculate since you can have goood or bad days, someone uses only chainshot, curses, always boards and other stats to throw in. You can’t judge skill by these things

So if even. They make hourglass a second pocket world. The outcomes will always be the same. Matched against someone weaker or stronger because that all there is in this tool. Players just wanting to fight regardless of level.

Thrill of the fight is all hourglass offers. Nothing else.
