Scraping Hourglass.

  • The decision to scrap “Hourglass” wouldn’t be so easy I know… Some players might even think I sound crazy honestly. When “Hourglass” was first introduced to the game I believe it brought some upside to it, But now seeing the majority of players constantly complaining with “Hourglass” problem’s such as “Skill-based matchmaking” , “Cheaters” , “Unsinkable spot’s” just makes it more of an anchor to the game’s true success.

  • I don't know if you've watched the latest dev updates but there are quite a few improvements coming to hourglass in season 19.

  • Agree.
It just needs to be removed. Even with the "improvements" it wont last long and will be back to square one in the long run once everyone figures out the loops and exploits that comes with the changes.

  • @littlelungzz591

To be honest, I don't think they'll ever scrap hourglass. They've invested too much time and money into the feature just to scrap it due to players being unhappy with it.

Hourglass changes are coming however. We're getting a shrinking circle, and they're making it to where you can't queue up near islands or forts to avoid players from taking advantage of unsinkable spots. Cheaters will always be a thing no matter what. They're ripe in hourglass, and they'll be ripe in Last Ship Standing as well. I'm 99% positive the developers know this. As far as getting evenly matched, by what merit do you filter 'skill based matchmaking'? Hours played? Hourglass levels? Should a player spend 2hrs underwater waiting for another player in order to be evenly matched? To ensure you always get a match quickly, the system pairs you with anyone who fits your crew size on your stamp, regardless if they're double-gold curse or a new player.

  • @burnbacon is your win rate above or below 25%?

  • @europa4033 Like @BurnBacon said, eventually they’ll find loops and exploit’s no matter how many times they update or “perfect” it. Scarping Hourglass would also allow them to focus more on the worldly changes. Players would also have Rare cosmetics since I’ve seen some players liking having rare cosmetics. The “updates” they do never end up targeting the main problems with the game. This is one of them.

If players can't queue up for hourglass being too close to a fort or island, that solves the issue you mentioned. Nothing can really be done about the skill-based matchmaking, since they don't want players complaining about long queue times. A shrinking circle is coming, which many players have wanted. To make it difficult for cheaters, new requirements are going to be put in place before you can queue for hourglass. They're making changes as best they can to it. Scraping the entire thing isn't about to happen, what with the development time and money already spent on it, to repeat myself again. Not sure what you mean about rare cosmetics, or how they never target the main problems with the game, I've just repeated myself and listed a few changes coming, that address the problem.

  • The only main problems I have with Hourglass, the players make up rules for it and if you dont follow those made up rules. "you are the toxic one" or Hourglass is broken.

Case 1: It being in adventure and everything happening to "disturb" you always equals bad. (Third party ships)
Case 2: Using the ammo granted by finding and stock piling. Curses/Bone Callers. (Being prepared for battle)
Case 3: Fighting someone who uses curse outfit vs someone who hasnt unlocked it = Fighting "Skillful"

Idk...its tiring to see and the changes they keep making, or try to make/fix, will never be enough for these people/complainers.
Maybe scrab isnt best word, but it needs some better grease in the wheels and encouragement to even keep going back.

Curses they offer are just there to encourage you to keep grinding, but we all know how the new players in the community and grinding means. BAD! :p
and its a PvP Tool...getting upset when you win/lose by any means always baffles me.

    • I only won only because a skeleton ship helped. (or another ship)
    • I lost because a Meg bite my ship first.

Suppose to be fun...but players complaining takes the enjoyment out of it. So i rather just see the thing go away, removes some of the toxicity

  • @europa4033 None of that will change the fact that Hourglass played a part in the toxicity of the game, You can’t always win bad decisions will cost you including Rare themselves. Also it GREATLY reducing the social interaction the game hinges on. I don’t see how any “improvements” that could change it. Maybe it’s too late…

No. Toxicity has been in the game even before hourglass LOL. I have older videos prior to season 8 to prove it, someone wishing whatever on me just because I sunk their ship and they weren't prepared. Hourglass didn't cause that.

Again, let me repeat myself here. Players didn't like it when they had to chase opponents around and around the border of hourglass. Rare has now changed it with a shrinking circle, to force engagement now. Another issue many players had, were that opponents would manage to get their ships into an unsinkable spot. So, Rare is now changing locations of where you can partake in it. Players were frustrated by cheaters, and so Rare has now set requirements you must do in order to queue up for hourglass.

This means: No more running for hours. It means players can't become unsinkable near islands. It means cheaters have to go thru the entire requirements all over again to queue up.

Not sure what you mean when you say you don't see how any improvements could change it, when these changes are what many players have been asking for for several years now.

  • @littlelungzz591

Why would hourglass increase toxicity? Half the people on these forums call people playing the game as intended, which inevitably includes PvP, toxic in itself. With that in mind, you’d think that many pirates would consider HG a blessing since it takes many people looking for fights out of the standard gameplay loop. If one isn’t even participating in HG I don’t see how they’d experience any toxicity from it. Also, as I’ve said several times on the forums, the most toxic encounters I have in sot come from players feeling entitled to the world event with the big cloud in the sky advertising it. God forbid you attack these Karen’s in an attempt to get the loot , they’ll call you every name they can think of. Most of my HG matches include little to no talking, sometimes gg, sometimes playful banter, and yes sometimes I get opponents who get a little too excited about the pirate game. I absolutely do not experience more toxicity in HG than the open world.

It’s an odd time to discuss ending HG when there are updates in the pipeline that many people are excited about. Have you played much HG? Just curious.

  • @burnbacon

People use all of these strategies and more in HG daily. If you want to do it, do it. I didnt take you for somebody who would get bent out of shape over criticism directed towards your using curse balls or whatever else.

I play however I want, I couldn’t care less what someone might say about it. if you’re in some kind of set up match/tournament, sure, but otherwise, who cares?

Seems like an odd reason to suggest closing down HG, especially with updates incoming.

Exploits extend beyond HG, the only uniquely HG exploit I can think of is some method to end a fight before it begins to get a win, or something. Not sure if I ever encountered it myself but I’ve seen it discussed. Some argue that harpooning your ship into a mostly unsinkable location is an exploit, and maybe it is, but I’ve hardly encountered it and it didn’t really bother me that much. Just some guys wanting to tdm.

Regarding having more time to focus on worldly changes, when was the last time there even was an HG update? I started playing in March 2023 and HG has barely even been touched.

Yea HG hasnt been touched since season 8 (3 years), aside from fixing bugs that made it unplayble.

  • @littlelungzz591 but then I have to go back to finding the once in a century server that the players aren't completely brain-dead to fight. HG is where the MOSTLY skilled players go (hg is still pretty brain dead), giving the high seas people a much more relaxed experience without a brig with 5000+ hours chasing them for their barnacle chests.

    tragic🥀🥀🥀🥀

I dont, Im tired of seeing the same posts about it from HG only players. It floods the forums.

    who cares?|

So far, everyone. And Rare has made changes to combat this in the future... it a waste of resources if I think about it.
But it is what it is.

With the new changes, Running will still be a thing, it just wont last as long, and with the new "locations" well..as long those locations are known, Third party ships will wait for them to spawn. So there that, and there will be more complaints. It just really tiring...

  • @burnbacon
uhh so first of all that's just people who loose hg matches, and its just people whinging that their bad at the game.
I personally don't use curseballs bc they are a little overpowered unless they are triple bucketing on brig and I just want them sunk. But I'm okay with getting curseballs used against me (unless they spam green curseballs bc its just annoying to have to helm with that.)

  • @burnbacon at this point in hg's lifecycle I think people need to realize its a scuffed system with some flaws, but it does work and people still play it a lot (I have almost 300 levels on my main)
I think that little qol changes are good, like the running and invincible spot patches (although I used to enjoy sitting in dagger tooth and tdming people and if they beat us/were good sports we'd give them the win, if they're toxic we'd just spawn camp them into oblivion/run them out)
But overall, sot players need to realize the games scuffed, and theres a lot of problems and rare isn't going to make everything perfect all the time. (rare this doesn't mean you can make garbage content go back to work making the GMU update)

  • @burnbacon

I mean if it’s just about people complaining on the little used forums, big deal. I don’t agree with the vast majority of complaints or ideas on these forums, so if someone wants to complain about bone callers, so what?

I see your post regarding HG and I agree that it’s just pvp on demand, so overall I’d say we’re on the same page with many of the HG related complaints. I get the impression that the majority of HG related post happen directly after someone lost a match which consisted of tactics they didn’t like.

All I’m saying is that I don’t think a factor to consider for shutting down HG should be complaints on the forums about bone callers (or whatever else).

  • To everyone complaining about pvp on demand: "Have you considered what will happen when all those pvp crews, used to hg everyday, go back to Adventure looking for fresh prey?"

  • @metal-ravage

    Make the seas fuller. :)
    I would welcome it again

  • @europa4033 I am assuming you completely skipped over what we said, typical though honestly. “let me repeat myself” no matter what they add to Hourglass it has already put an anchor to the game. After all this time they never touched HG until it was too late… The same problem's you think that will vanish won’t. You honestly can’t be that gullible.

  • @littlelungzz591

Have you tried it yet on Insiders? Have you seen the shrinking circle? Yeah, "nothing will change".

  • @burnbacon

I welcome your optimistic attitude, yet don't think that those complaining about the proximity spawning on adventure will feel the same.

  • @littlelungzz591 do you play HG? Like daily? We have a very strong HG community that plays daily. It isn't going anywhere. The same crews are on daily you get to know them in the community. The cheaters come and go. The new improvements are hopefully going to change a lot of things for the better, time will only tell. But to say they should scrap it all together is so far from the truth. I never get matched with newbies. I wish lol not for them cause they would get destroyed instantly with my crew being high leveled but I feel we get matched with people in our skill levels. HG is what we play almost daily. It is fun and the regular community players are not toxic to you they treat you with kindness after each match. They know you will run into each other constantly and it's fun to do so especially when the battles are so close. It's the ones that are salty and just going for curses that talk nasty after each fight. You can definitely tell the difference.

  • @elmo6842 Going back to what @DerMasterBob said, HG was ignored for “3 years” with Rare’s acknowledgement into play knowing the flaws included sadly, which made it “unplayable”. The only reason you play is most likely your crew’s (you mentioned the word “WE”) knows all the “loops” and “in and outs” involved with HG. Put yourself into the shoes of newer players that have no knowledge. Also you mentioned that you would like to run in “newbie’s” so you can “obliterate them” with your “higher level” crew just further proves the point. Like I told @Europa4033 the same problems you’re both thinking that will vanish won’t, can you both be a little realistic honestly.? Other than that you most likely wouldn’t run into toxic players much due to you being a female.

  • @littlelungzz591 I never said I want to "obliterate" newbies. Love how you put words in my mouth. Reread my comments. I jokingly said "I wish" to running into newbies cause where everyone keeps saying they get teamed against all the high level players all the time as a newbie. I never run into newbies. The skilled based match making works as it is supposed to. I wouldn't want to play against someone just starting out due to they don't know how to play. They would be running away the whole time. It definitely wouldn't be a fair fight. But with the new changes coming to stop people from just being able to throw down HG after starting a new account lets talk about that. No one has thought this out or had a discussion on this yet. But just remember even with what they started now to stop the cheaters from just being able to jump into HG they have now opened the gates to all of you on adventure mode. Since they can't just jump into HG they will just target everyone on adventure instead. What are they planning on doing then to stop that? Or is that not even on their radar? After next week we are going to see people complaining there are people teleporting on their ships or random kegs appearing again. We know it will be coming.

Also in regards to us being females not running into toxic people ha you are so wrong. I get called every name in the book once they realize I'm a girl and beat them. They get so butt hurt that a female is good at HG. Men are so ignorant to females in HG when they lose.
