Your assistance/advice - build'n a model ship

  • Hi there, I'm contemplating building a model sail ship from popsicles and MSG. Never done it before but thought it would be a great project to work on with my young 9 yr old son. I'm finding it really hard to find any decent plans to use that are free to download. Has anyone got any suggestions that may help. I also want to share my progress with the community as I go. The type of ship I'm looking for is something like a frigate that has great style and flair to it with some gold trim on the stern and figurehead.

  • Not sure what to suggest. Going to tag @lunecro here. They made a thread a while back in the fan art section called something like Making a wooden scale model.

They might have some advice, or an idea of where best to look. I wish you good luck though and look forward to seeing the results of your labors. ;)

  • @agentsalvo There is heaps of stuff that comes up in Pinterest and You Tube videos for popsicle sailships etc. You can use pictures as a reference and just build from there.

Also a printable paper model here -http://ravensblight.com/DarkPromise.html

  • @stacky-a Thanks. I can't link stuff from me Xbox ;p

Thanks, but not quite what I had in mind. This will be large scale, Like 3-4 ft long. It will be a feature piece in the house with LED lights.

  • If it's your first model you better not start something big especially a frigate or a man o' war i admit that seeing a large wooden ship can attract you but don't forget, you'll need to complete it, it will take a lots of times the first parts are always the most simple even for a big ship then it gonna get harder with the boarding and at the end for all the ropes knots etc...
You won't find any decent plan for free wooden boat, unless you're working the wood as job you can still buy a kit on the internet (be ready to spend some money)
If you wish to, you can start by a schooner.
But apparently you want to build from the start i can't really help you in since i'm getting a hand for the sails and some piece of wood that doesn't mean i can't help you in your project ;)

Thanks for the advice, I do realise it's better to start small but I don't really want to have to build another. This is it, success or fail. I thought of doing a kit (wooden) but they are quite expensive. So if I do build one, it will be from scratch. I already have a lot of materials, what I really need is some detailed plans which it seems I may have to buy unfortunately.
