Phantom Fortresses untapped potential

  • There are a lot of things I'd like to see added to the Sea of Thieves but there is also content that already exists that has a lot of potential. That to me are the Fortresses around the map. Personally I think completing a fortress should have more impact on the game overall. So here are some ideas for the Phantom fortresses going forward.

    First I'll say I think the Raids on a Dark Fortress were great and I would actually be in favor of removing phantom fleets as a world event in favor of a dark fortress word event. Only thing I'd change is maybe add an extra fort round and ghost ship round where you get flagship at the end and a new ghost boss on the fort. This would be somewhat of a ghost equivalent of an Ashen Lord. This like I said would replace the ghost ship fleet world event and this would use the same green tornado.

    As for the other forts on that aren't a world event you would still complete them as normal. But now there are benefits to completing them outside of just treasure. Now these forts are under your control. Now when players sail by the fort the title card will read "Ancient Gold Fortress commanded by (fill in gamertag here)" it will also be indicated on players maps as well.

    Taking command of the fortresses has a couple of benefits

    1.) There will now be a beacon at the top of the fortress that you can light to make that fortress your spawn point should you sink. So say an enemy ship catches you with your pants down and sinks your ship at the Fort of Fortune but you completed the nearby fortress. Now instead of spawning at a random spot potentially across the map you spawn at the fortress allowing you to get back to the fight faster.

    1. Completed Fortresses will now allow you to see enemy ships within a certain perimeter of the fortress on the map on your ship. And not just a silhouette of a ship but the type, emissary and what level emissary.

    While your not at the fort phantoms will protect it but should another crew defeat it not only will they now control it and reap it's benefits but they'll pick up a fortress flag only found at player controlled fortresses. Worth 20000 gold sold only at Reapers or Athena's.

    So what if another ship is at said fortress, waiting for your ship to magically respawn, only to sink it again....
    and players already complain about ships respawning So close to World Events or so, this just be another.

    What about rowboats?

  • Well I would definitely put at least a notification system when an enemy ship enters cannonball range of a fortress with a lit beacon. That way you at least know what your walking into. Should your ship sink.

    Also while you need to complete the fort to light the beacon enemy players can still turn off the beacon. So if a nearby world event is occupied and you're the attacker an you notice they have fortress completed it might be in your best interest to stop at the fortress first and put out the beacon before attacking the enemy at the world event.

    As for rowboats. Not really sure. Part of me wants them to be visible and the other part says keep them invisible (mapwise that is) for stealth plays

  • @i-am-the-law935 Not sold on conquering sea forts. I disagree with spawning your ship at the sea fort.
    However I think if you die at a conquered sea fort your player can possibly respawn there without the ship, and can take a mermaid when needed. I could see the Sea Fort actually being used as a storage unit. You can lock your loot up in the treasury while you sail around building emissary or whatever, and can see ships(not rowboats) when they are in vicinity. And the sea forts have to be completed as normal by other crews to end its control and steal any enemy player loot stored there. Players owning the sea fort are notified when they lose it.

    Also Id love to replace the ghost fleet world event with a sea fort world event any day. Tbh I just never liked the ghost fleet world event.
