Game is unplayable without option to select server region

  • Playing from central europe, the ping is usually between 90 and 200, never seen it lower than 80, counting numerous different servers (either new games, hourglass pvp and in-game server change), while on other games where I can select the region I usually play at a ping lower than 20.

Opponents usually have a higher ping as well, making it even worse - hitting shots feels like a matter of luck.

  • @pepsyssoul play with a vpn then.

  • This could be a good thing in Settings.

I would not want to have to choose it each time I log in.

It might also have to be limited to continent, for example NA players would not be able to choose an EU server but they could choose among the regions, e.g. East West North South, whatever they have probably same Azure regions we all see in Azure Portal.

  • @tesiccl How would a vpn help? I want to play on a server that is the closest to my location.

  • @pepsyssoul you can literally move server/country location via a vpn.

This is not true. I have tested this myself and this doesn't work.

  • @archonsot then you’re not doing it right.

By using a VPN, location dependent, you'll likely increase ping/lag. My experience has been selecting anything other than my home country has been worse, but I'm also not in Europe so YMMV

  • Would be nice to select preferred language too! So often, I find myself sailing with Chinese players. I don't speak Chinese.

  • @tesiccl said in Game is unplayable without option to select server region:

@ArchonSoT there is only 1 server for all of Europe, so VPN isn’t going to help in this case. Unfortunately you are out of luck and will just have to deal with the ping you have until they open another server, but even if they did open another server, there’s no guarantee it would be closer to you than the current one.

I’m in the US and even though we have 4 server locations, my ping is usually 70-80 on the closest one and up to 140 if I connect to the other coast. I can get 60 on a fresh server but once I start sailing around it goes up to 70 and usually hovers there. So this game also just has a ping problem. My ping on the other games I play is almost never over 45 on my closest servers.

  • @surveyorpete if you start a boat yourself and make it open crew you are more likely to get people in your current region. Open crew works a bit different with matchmaking and if there’s a spot on a ship in a different region, it is more likely to fill it with anyone who is looking and not just people locally.

There’s also an official discord where you can post and join LFGs instead of just open crew, then you can find people in the same region as you.

  • @pepsyssoul it will always try to connect you to the closes server to you, meaning that unless your ISP has some serious routing issues your region selection option will change nothing.

Also sot servers never have a ping lower then around about 40

  • @callmebackdraft I wish I saw 40 in a SoT server, lowest I’ve ever had was 60. If you live closer to one of the servers you get better ping, they just don’t have enough server locations, but they don’t seem to care about our ping. I mostly play with people from Europe, so we take turns on who has bad ping that day. I usually host during certain hours, and they host during others. That way we are playing around the high traffic times as well as avoiding one person always having bad ping.

  • @abjectarity

What is a "Region"? I am in Australia and wonder it is the same "region" as much of Asia, including China, due to Australia's comparitively small gaming population, and being of a similar longitude (and timezone) to East Asia.

  • @surveyorpete region would be server that supports your area. Australia actually has its own server, but after a certain time of night(about 1-2am AEST) they shut down and new sessions get put onto a Singapore server. That might be who you are meeting. There’s also a Hong Kong and Tokyo server.

Open crew will match make someone in the US with someone across the world, and vice versa, so it’s also just an open crew thing. Game looks for crews that are open with a spot and doesn’t prioritize location if nothing is available near you.

  • Ping over 80 is just a SOT thing, I've never seen anyone that has a constant ping below 40. Changing server region wouldn't change anything on that.

  • Should this post not be asking for more servers closer to you? Presumably the game defaults to your closest anyway so the option to choose wouldn't improve your ping or am I missing something

  • @hiradc you’re not really missing anything. We’ve had someone recently that’s ISP was routing them to the wrong server and a VPN helped them get a better connection.

Other than situations like that, a VPN isn’t going to help anyone as they are already going to be routed to their closest server. So a lack of servers is the issue. Or more specifically, a lack of servers spread over the continents.

Most large title games have fewer servers grouped in a location, but lots of locations, and since ping can be impacted by traffic, selecting a somewhat close but less used server may yield better results.

So people assume SoT is similar, but it’s not. 1 data center location for the entirety of Europe, plenty of servers in that location, but unfortunately only 1 location.

  • @foambreaker only issue with having a server selector is it helps stream-snipers or server-hoppers to find specific servers or players to disrupt which is why Rare have not added it and i very much doubt they ever will add it.

  • @pepsyssoul this is not how servers work and i dont understand what you'd consider a "fix" for this; do you believe your ping will improve if you choose a server that isn't native to you? you have better ping in other games because other games have better servers. i get between 8-20 ping in CS:GO servers, but that's not at all comparable to the servers in sea of thieves because they aren't run by the same people, dont have the same load on them, there is likely a different distance between your computer and the sea of thieves servers - they are different in any way.
if you want to get onto a specific set of servers like NA, Asia or AU, the best way to do it is by using a VPN. I know a good free VPN is Windscribe which gives you 2gb free a month IIRC.
The ping in EU servers is average of 80 or so because Sea of Thieves has continued to place more stress and strain on the servers month by month, I believe Rare are in a 10-year contract to use Microsoft's Azure servers which is why we are seeing poorer server performance. There is not much you can do.

Apologies if I've completely misunderstood your point or post; please feel free to correct me if it is the case.

I'm in Australia too - plenty of nights there's pirates in Perth, Tasmania & China all on the same server. It can get pretty chonky sometimes.

Not bragging but sometimes I get lucky and ping under 40. Actually I've seen as low as 25 and consistent low 30's, but usually it's not that.

  • At least you guys get to see your ping. On xbox we just have to feel it based on interactions and delays, players teleporting or needing to try and load cannon several times etc

  • Well, thanks for the info everyone - it seems then that it's not a problem of finding a good server, the issue is that there is actually no good server.

  • @ilmilou I guess you are right - I thought there would be better/closer servers, as the ping I'm getting is what I'd get by playing dota in US East, and thought it would be most likely that there would be a better option for playing from central europe.

Is there any officioal place I can check servers status / ping?
According to some unofficial websites that say they can test your ping for Sea of Thieves servers, there are servers in London, Frankfurt and Spain where my ping is around 10-30.

  • @pepsyssoul internet ping and in-game ping are different things. when I do a speedtest and get a ping result of 5ms that is because the latency between my PC and Google's servers is 5ms, however when I play Sea of Thieves my ping is around 80 because the latency between my PC and Sea of Thieves' servers is 80. Ping varies because the servers you are using for a process varies, ping is not global.
I don't know of any website that allows you to check ping of certain servers but if you are in EU then EU servers will be the best choice for you.

Which is why I suggested they select region not server.

  • I used to get ping under 40 but recently some sort of "magic" gives me 80-100 , unless using VPN and same region , then I get 25-50.

  • @foambreaker there are only 4 server locations in SoT: EU, AU, NA and Asia. allowing players to hop in whatever region they want makes server hopping for streamers much easier. apologies if my wording was confusing

You do understand there are HUNDREDs of servers in those regions right? That the max for any server is 6 ships, 18 players.

  • yes of course, however being in the same region as a streamer makes it easier to hop for them, especially if they are doing hourglass.
