Shrine of Oceans Fortune + Flameheart at Mermaid's Hideaway = AI sinking your ship while you are below the waves.

  • Ahoy Rare,

Title basically explains everything. The shrine and the WE at mermaids are too close to eachother.

We were doing the voyage for the sunken curse and heard cannons when doing the shrine, since we took the chest with us, we did not care much and also thought perhaps it's an hourglass fight.

Once finished with the shrine, we obviously spawned at an outpost, on the opposite side of the map... Hellbent on revenge we were on the way back to collect the loot and continue on the voyage, but we did not see any ships nearby. Once we stopped at the shrine to get our stuff from the mermaid, the ghost ships were firing on us.

I doubt this was intended as Shrines came out when Flameheart world event was out of the game. Not sure what's the best way to fix this, but just wanted to let you know.

  • Jonah!!!

  • @zig-zag-ltu Yep, encountered this too.

But i don't think this is the only one though. I think the following combo's might have the same problems (never tried it out though):

    • Thieves' Haven - Shrine of Ancient Tears
    • Lone Cove - Shrine of the Coral Tomb
    • Old Faithful Isle - Treasury of the Secret Wilds
    • Shipwreck Bay - Shrine of Flooded Embrace
  • @super87ghost I don’t think Flameheart spawn on Thieves Haven

  • Don't nerf it you cowards!

    Remove shrine safe zones lol.

  • The solution is obviously PVP only servers. No AI enemies = no chance of this happening.

  • The reason you hear cannons when down there is to give you opportunity to return to your ship and defend it, seems like working as intended to me if you choose to stay down there.

  • @hiradc .....this is not a topic ''game bad, fix this for ME now'' this is a topic where I wanted to shed light on unintended consequences of short sighted game design.

I can assure you, if you are down there and I already positioned my ship to attack you, you won't save it. Unless we would do something really dumb while attacking your empty ship. This is why we never bothered to go check, as we had what's important with us, if we knew it could be AI attacking us, obviously I would have gone up and positioned the ship a bit furhter.

So basically, we simply had no idea it was AI attacking us, as a measurement to avoid loosing progress vs players, we took the coral chest with us, so sinking was never a problem. We had nothing on the ship, no emissary and we would sell often on our way to shrines.

Also if you have not noticed, AI is passive in this game when you are not sailing. Meg wont spawn on you, skelly ships wont spawn on you, world even wont spawn on you. In this case WE did spawn on us as we were in the vincinity of being attacked by it.

  • @zig-zag-ltu megs can spawn on stationary ships. A good way to hunt involves...
    Gets clotheslined by Wolfmanbush

  • @thegingrprince Stationary while you are on board, still counts as sailing, just not movin :D (imo). But if your boat is abandoned and you are swimming/row boating can it spawn still? I thought you must be on your ship for that to happen.

  • @zig-zag-ltu ah, yeah. I think you may be right there. Im sure a certain Meg expert will be in to clarify soon.

to answer the question posted, don't need to be on the boat for a meg or skelly ship as long as it is in a qualifying location/distance away from land, or kraken for that matter

typically not right on top of a shrine though, more the surrounding areas

shrines attract random skelly ships, typically gotta be on the boat to trigger those at shrines unless another player is sneaking around and getting involved

  • @wolfmanbush So basically the player attracts the megs not the ship.

So lets say you and your ship are in the open water, but you are not on the ship. And the meg would spawn. It would spawn on the player, not the ship right?

the boat and that specific boat/server which is why when people sink/merge it resets their meg timer

there are always anomalies but the 2 main meg spawns are timer based which can be anywhere from an hour to 3+ hours or a random meg that typically happens within the first 10-15 minutes of a session

this is all specifically about organic play, no manipulation/coordination

  • @wolfmanbush I meant that you meet the conditions, there is no server merge. You are 1 square away from your boat, which is like you in the open waters and the meg spawns. Would it spawn on your empty boat, or yourself in a rowboat?

P.S. I know this is a silly question, just curious. Would suck to loose CoF this way :D

your boat, won't spawn on the player or a rowboat specifically

  • @wolfmanbush Oh ok, thanks for clarifying. Good to know!

My pleasure, I love the emergent spawn system. Skelly ships are completely random but megs and krakens are a lot of fun for me when it comes to predicting times and adding efficiency to my hunting, as I adapt to every update since they typically change things just enough to always have something new to learn about how they will be for a while.

That even includes time of day, activity levels, everything is a part of everything, I love it.

The risk/reward of it due to timing and pvp always made it more intense than just about anything else for me and I never really wanted to steal much so it all worked out.
