I'm attacked/sunk by everyone at this point

  • I know this isn't "Sea of Friends" and after reading a lot of forums/discussions I can concede that a completely PVE server could eventually become dull after so long (granted it may take a lot longer for me to reach that point), but since season 9 has dropped my SOT experience has significantly declined. I haven't been able to really enjoy any world-events, shrines, or even tall-tales without being attacked/sunk especially if I'm not on my ship for more than like 5 minutes. I've played for a while now so of course this isn't a new experience for me, it's part of the game, but it's never been this frequent and I'm finding myself playing the game less & less now as a result.

I was thinking maybe it's a combination of increasing the server capacity to 6 ships and that hourglass PVP is no longer diverting PVP encounters as it once did or maybe I just have really really bad luck when it comes to populating in a server with very aggressive players. I personally tend to spend more of my time running PVE but have always enjoyed the subtle anxiety of having to check the horizon for other players but it's become almost guaranteed that someone will roll up on me cannons blazing at this point. I don't know if anyone else is having a similar experience?

Although it is still a beautiful game that is unlike any other, the PVE / PVP balance has significantly changed for me and I just can't immersive myself in it like I could before the Season 9 update.

  • Sorry you're having a tough time.

It can get overwhelming when random feels like it's targeting you.

I hope things turn around for you and you find more enjoyable sessions.

  • This is how it used to be when it used to be 6 ships before they dropped it down to 5, and personally im happy they brought it back up.

  • Appreciate the encouragement & feedback from my fellow swashbucklers. I'll certainly keep at as with sometime the change may be welcomed and could very well grow on me.

If the big issue with getting attacked so frequently is a matter of worry about losing your loot, i might suggest a personal challenge that i used to put onto my self to learn not to worry about loot.

If you are willing, put up an emissary, stack to grade 5, and dont allow your self to turn in unless you sink at least 1 other enemy ship. It taught me that loot doesnt matter more than you let it, as well i learned a lot about how to fight and keep calm while fighting. I looked at it the whole time as, if i lost, then i didnt defend my treasure well enough and need more practice, and the enemy earned it for doing better, but if i won, i defended it well enough to earn it.

This type of challenge may not be for everyone, but most people i have told it to have said it sounds like genuine fun, and it does teach you a lot, and readies you to take on anyone who attacks at any time.

  • @goldsmen That sounds like a fun change of pace for a mostly PVE'er like myself. I'll give it a try next session!

  • @goldsmen This is, to a T, what I did to get comfortable with PvP and loss of loot.

It really does the perfect job of breaking that "loot == success" mindset we have has gamers, and lets you learn to enjoy the experiences this games offers, including combat.

  • This game is not fun enough to toil for hours, just to be ganked by a team of no lifers that solo the game. Consistently I get on with my duo to try a vault. We always get up to the point where we have a key and go to the island. Then the massive ship orbiting the vault island ruins our hard work in the 5 mins it takes for them to sink us.

We spawn to our fresh ship, with nothing to show for our playtime. Cool. Good game.

Thread title is accurate, it’s a problem that is losing rare players. “Oh boohoo get gud” whatever.

  • @bro5eph-g
Two best recommendations: Don't toil for hours, and keep a weathered eye on the horizon.
If you toil for hours and stack tons and tons of loot, it's on you if you lose it. Use every opportunity and then some to sell, i call it my "Insurance Policy" so even if i get sunk, i get something out the session or towards what i'm working on.

And for things like vaults especially, that keep you away from your ship for extended periods of time, keep someone back on the ship as lookout, don't let people roll up on you if you see them coming. It's a learning curve for sure, and while i don't want to say "git gud lol" there's definitely a lot to learn, don't be ashamed about losing or not knowing. It's not about the gold, it's about the glory.

Your language here is inflammatory and while i understand that early frustration, nothing gives you the right to call people no-lifers if you want any respect in return, please understand that. The game might not be for you, and that's okay. But at the end of the day, it's a PVPVE game, with all kinds of players.

  • Yes, I had exactly the same experience. I found myself being attacked more frequently than any other previous season.

I want to get renown quickly to then leave the game and go somewhere else, this game is not for me.

And it seems I am forced to use a 3rd party software like discord in order to have fun because I have no one to play this with, and because I can't join an alliance server without a discord account. I am forced to play solo because open crews are not effective.

Definately the game is not for me, and sailing solo made me paranoid of every ship on the horizon because I know they will come and sink me and kill me. I don't find friendly players at all, it's all shoot on aight, and they are not even willing to talk or at least give a reason for sinking me. The fact that my ship is afloat is enough reason for me to be sunk on sight and that's why avoid player interactions at all.

People say that player interactions are what makes this game interesting, but in my experience, when every player interaction is just a bigger ship attacking me even with no loot, and they don't talk, just shoot on sight, then I avoid any player interaction at all.

  • @dragotech123 on the site there's a big groups of people in communities, maybe there you can find people to play with. personally me and my friends founded a mini group on telegram where every italian can joying, because the biggest italian community is full of dbs from pc. i suggest you to do a thing like that. maybe using the PvP mode in solo can add someone to play with

  • @fedted998 I appreciate the suggestion, but I'll just finish the season pass and leave the game. I have been too hurt already in the past couple of days to just keep playing this.
It's time for me to leave this game for good and find something else that I may actually enjoy.

  • @dragotech123 dude, i can fell you, i just uninstalled yesterday the game, i need some time to rest because i'm quite anger about other people who loves ruining the game to others. but maybe was the time: there's a community day, so toxic players knows EXACTLY that their action can create frustration on the normal people who was try to enjoy the game, you don't have to give up, if you enjoy the game you have to find the right server

  • I am a Big new players defender, I do not like veterans abusing newbies, that is griefing and being a garbage player, but you guys must understand that the Game has a PvP component that cant be avoided unless you play on Pve Servers.

If you feel frustration when you loose your loot, is ok, I used to feel the same my first 200-300 hours, I got tons of bans from Xbox for sending DMs to others on rage attacks due to loose an entire morning of farm. But if you try and improve PvP, the Game turns a different thing, when you dont have fear of loosing, you can all in and try crazy things that Will make you better, even if you loose.

Hourglass is sht but It can help you to play PvP with zero fear of loosing anything, maybe your flag and you can literally rise It to 5 again on 2 fights so It doesnt Matter too much.

Or you can wait 1-2 months and play when all players get commendations and leave.

  • @fedted998 there are lots of things I enjoy in the game, I enjoy games with custom characters, and since 2012 I wanted to play a game with pirate theme where I can play with my custom character. I enjoy the tall tales, fighting skeletons, ghost and lots of stuff.

But when I have to deal with other players I always have the short the end of the stick. Yesterday a brig came and sunk me and they made the bucket taunt to me while my soul was leaving my body. Some days earlier a galleon came and kegged me because I was busy at an island and they said things like "Cry" and "Go back to Roblox" (I have the screenshots), I rarely, very very rarely meet a pirate who doesn't want to sink me on sight. I have become paranoid of sails on the horizon. I've been chased a lot of times even when I don't have anything of value on my ship. Sometimes I wonder what's the point of the alliance flag if it has no use. For the other crews I am just an easy target that has commited the crime of logging into the game and for that I must be punished with a sink.

Yeah, and in the pirate code it asks veteran players to teach new players and be friendly to them when in reality the newbies are seen as easy prey and primary targets.

  • @dragotech123 I've different patterns for not being harrassed: 1- devil's. there you can do all things (also there's some accomendations to do there) but you have to face vs Volcanos. 2-keep an eye on reapers. if they are too close, change server even before set sails, not risking. because toxic people usually play as reapers. 3-keep in your bag the checkpoint of the first Pirate's life tall tale or the shores of gold one, with the Pirates Life you can change server but you lose all your loot, instead the shores of gold tall tale you can run in the top right side of the map, and if they have not the checkpoint too, you are safe with loot, bu for selling you have to go back in the regular sea. different choices, i have both the checkpoints, just in case. 4-not raising an emissary flag. if in the server there's a reaper grade 5 it can seen you if you have an emissary flag on. they will prefer this kind of ship instead your not emissaried one. the best one is of course in my opinion the first, using the devils, the payment is more high than the usual, the islands are easy to know but you have to face against volcanos, heartquakes and gaysers...they are pretty annoyng but at least you're alone

  • I have seen many posts like yours recently and I hate to be that guy but what you are describing is a skill issue ( and I do not mean it in a git gud way). If you wish to do PvE without having to worry about other players there are a couple things you should do. Firstly join a dead server (you can check for reaper and other emissaries at the table you vote to raise flag for each one). Second you always need to check your surroundings and your map. You might not see a ship on the horizon but there might be a reaper 5 on the map which could pose a big threat later. Also after you reach grade 5 with your chosen emissary sell all your loot and do little stacks after that to minimize your losses in case you get sunk. Sea of thieves is at it's best state for PvE players. There is a specific pvp mode drawing attention away from pve, harpoon changes and the sovereigns have made it so that you can get and sell loot very easy and the recent event changes
make it so that even world events (apart from FoF,FotD) are quick and easy to complete. Also if you are being chased learning how to outsail someone ,board spam in order to get an anchor, and drive-by sell your loot can make a big difference.

  • @fedted998 Thanks, but I am really switching games after completing the pass. I don't think it's a good idea that I keep playing this at all.

If you know other games with custom characters, please let me know.

It’s rarely I get into pvp.

  • I definitely feel as well like I can't go a session without someone trying to fight me unless I stay in the roar this season.

Personally I deal with it by prioritizing finding a rowboat and burying excess loot for insurance.

  • @dragotech123

Pirate Code is wet paper to be honest, nobody respects It. The Game used to be like you said on release, veteran people teaching newbies, but that changed 2-3 months after release, when people got tired of doing animal quests and barnacle chests hunting. Hunting people were more funny and rewarding in terms of gold, in that epoch emissaries were a dream and the amount of gold were ridiculous, too low.

All my Friends left the Game due to extreme griefing that times, raged on forums and let a zero on metacritic deserving bad things to devs.

Now, even with all the PvP encounters, the learning curve is less dificult than before, people is more agressive but you have more ways to escape from them, unless they board you, in that case you are done. And also more ways to improve at PvP.

But if you still refusing to engage combate with others and you like SoT, just check Google and join Alliance Servers discord, queue for a spot and enjoy Pve without being disturbed, is the only way to archive what you want, but you have to play with others because they have brigs and the dont allow solo sloopers on their Servers.

  • @dragotech123 it depends of what kind of game you like: there is a lot of, mostly RPG style, but like sot where you can do anything not much. there's GTA online that recently have added the solo, or crew session, where the only player that plays, it's you. you can also try payday, is a fine game, you are a thief, make bank heists and with money that you gain you can buy more stuff/weapons for the future heists you made

When did not being born with skill and having to work at something become a source of shame? I'm genuinely curious why people choose to be insulted by a game mechanic because it requires them to have to work at being good at it in order to overcome a particularly troublesome skill check.

None of us were born good at SoT. We all learned to be better.

I don't have a good answer to your complaint. I can, however, share my experiences. I am NOT a pvp'er. I generally suck at it, especially when I'm playing on my solo sloop. Here's what I've learned over time:

Join the discord, and find a group with a mic to play with. I very much enjoy playing the game when there's a group with me, even if we end up losing our loot due a sinking. (Though, it still stings). Everything from another slooper to a brig or galleon, so long as you have others to play with, it helps tremendously.

Second, I've ended up on an alliance server from time to time. Every time I actually ended up regretting it. Yes, you end up making bank, but to be honest.....the game is off when you do it. I've found a good part of the fun of the game comes from the tension inherent in the SOT world. On an alliance server, that tension is gone, and with it, the spark that makes SOT great.
