Skeleton ship update

  • You know the skeleton ships. They are in high numbers, can't bucket out water, can't be anchored by hand, can't break their masts and have a lot of loot on board. It's already been 5 years since they rised from the depths and were then never touched ever since (so far as i can tell). It is time to give them a little bit of a update to them. The first thing should be that we the capstan, sail and wheel are interactable by the player. This could lead yo some advantageous positions if you have hijacked the ship. Second thing is, and complain all you want, they should bucket water out of their vessel. I know this'll make the fights a bit more difficult, but skeleton ships should be a way to practice naval combat and head-to-head combat. Ever seen a ship that doesn't bucket out water out of their ship? Propably very rarely, but you get the point. Third thing should be that we can use chainshots to break their masts, wheel and capstan. This way we can practice using chain shots with that giving us a possible advantage. Fourth thing should be that when their captain dies, the crew will be less efficient then usual. The first mate will be the one on the helm, but the others will be in trouble. They'll fire cannonballs slower, repair slower, bail out water slower and will perform worse in head-to-head combat. This'll make crews prioritze the captain first to permanentely destabalise the skeleton crew itself for an easy sink. The fifth thing should be hijacking the ship and forcing them to obey you as your captain. This would propably not be included in the Thieving Seas, but imagine it. Sailing with a crew of skeletons that obey you, taking out other crews and having a celebration over winning battles. Of course the balance here is that all the trading companies, except the Bones of the Reapers, do NOT want to interact with you because of you being a captain of a skeleton ship. It would make sense as the skeletons are not only from Flameheart, but also terrorized the outposts back in the day. So you will be unable to sell, buy supplies, pick up voyages, etc. The Bones of the Reapers will be impressed by your feat and will offer you a quest, which leads to the fifth thing. You will be given a voyage by the Flame Servant that requires you to hunt down an AI Athena vessel manned by phantoms loyal to the Lord of Pirates. They would just be a copy of the skeleton ships, but they have two weapons at once, like the original phantoms that haunt the islands. Some will have a blunderbus and a cutlass, a flinlock and a blunderbuss and maybe on rare occasions an Eye of Reach. When sunk, they will drop a lot of loot that the Reapers are interested in. Especially ne of them, being the Box of Legendary Riches. This box will give you 25 000 gold when sold to the Flame Servant and will obviously unlock cosmetics dedicated to skulls and bones, similair to the Bone Crusher set.
Thank you for your time, pirates.
    I bid you adieu.

    With friendliest reggards
    Captain Sif

  • There's some good ideas here.

And then there's some I don't ever want to see.

  • @personalc0ffee
Aye, you are correct. Seeing a player manning a whole galleon of undead skeletons would be... scary to say the least.

  • Some interesting ideas here. Being able to drop their masts would be cool, and helpful for solo sloops trying to do the Skeleton Fleet event. It would give more realistic practice for those wanting to learn more about naval battles. Being able to temporarily take control of the wheel could be fun, too. Ramming the ship into rocks or an island could be very useful to battling skellies for the Sea of Thieves.

However, a few ideas I do not think would be great. Taking control of a skelly ship and sailing it around with a horde of skellies to fight for you sounds great! However, I just don't see it as being very feasible for the game. It sounds unbalanced as all get-out, and just not really in the theme of the game. Also, allowing skellies to bucket water?! You must be mad, because that would basically make skelly ships as they are now invincible. Skellies respawn at such a fast rate, and if you kill someone with water in their bucket that water disappears anyway, and there are so many skellies on a skelly galleon anyway, there would almost never be water in the ship. Unless you were on a fully crewed galleon and had a boarder who was using firebombs and trying to kill skellies left and right, there would be almost no way to sink them! And sinking a skelly galleon as a solo sloop if they could bucket water would be basically impossible. It would be so incredibly difficult to put enough pressure on the skellies to sink them that it might as well be impossible.

Now, perhaps with this new system they would go about rebalancing the entire way a skelly-ship operates, but that seems like a lot of effort for what seems like very little benefit.

  • Interesting points. I like damage to the masts, wheel, and capstan. I think if skellies could bucket water, they should not be allowed to heal and respawn. Or alternatively reduce the crew to 4 to mirror player galleons. I love the idea of seizing control of a Galleon. It should be an instant world event. When a ship is seized, an announcement goes out to all players on the server to hunt and destroy the skelly ship together. The player can only steer the ship. All else is reliant on his skeleton crew.

  • Once you firebomb the skeleton ships deck, the rest is moot.

  • I'm reading this and I think it's a real opportunity.

I like the idea of being able to drop their masts, it would introduce new players to the mechanic. I like the idea of being able to drop their anchor for the same reason. Same with bucketing, except it would tech new players the value of boarding as well.

Skeleton ships should be the introduction to PVP that the Maiden Voyage just isn't.

P.S., I still love the idea of being able to hire NPCs at the outposts and hideout. They would follow the wheel commands as best as possible: raise the sails, angle the sails, fire at will, go repair, etc. Most importantly I want them to razz me when I make a mistake like hitting a rock or missing a cannon or when the ship is getting full of water. But that's not this game, that's more Skull and Bones. This game is about interacting with other pirates and the crew sailing the ship. So sadly my friend, we will probably never see NPC crew in Sea of Thieves.

  • I like 1 and 4, being able to steer the ship off course and hurt it by targeting the captain.

Though I'm not sure how much is actually possible without a major AI rework because as of right now, skelly ships are the way they are because their AI is simple.
They'll even go straight over islands of they bug out enough. There's a reason my crew calls them monster trucks, and it's not just because of the fleet cloud.

Like i said, "call me crazy all you want"
I knew someone would be shocked to hear that skeleton ships can bucket out water. It is right to complain about this, and i am sure you won't be the only one. Thanks for taking your time to read, eh!
