Saying Goodbye to The Arena

  • I fully understand and support the decision to remove arena. It wasn't maintained, was low priority due to small player base, and often took much longer to get into a match than to actually play the match.

However, I feel like most of the commendations could be translated to adventure mode quite easily in order to keep the cosmetics obtainable. For example, 240 wins could translate to 2,400 player sinks as PL. 100 kills with x weapon could be 1,000 in adventure. Add a 10x (or more) multiplier to keep it a challenge, making the commendations obtainable but still rare.

I'm not asking for a reversal to the decision, just an idea for maybe a future decision to let those of us who don't have time to grind out the rest of arena in a month to obtain the cosmetics an alternate way.

  • @indubitably1 "We have made the decision to give out these ship cosmetics as a reward for participation in The Arena up to now, so you will no longer be able to head into The Arena and earn them. They are to show our gratitude to everyone who has supported and enjoyed The Arena up to this point."

  • Why do you developers hate PvP so much? Whats the next big thing? Will you make it a turned base game where you need to roll 10 or above on the dice for your cannon to hit? I bought this game and i loved everything about it, now i dont. All these steps to make this game as much beginner friendly as possible? The game is called Sea of Thieves but i barely see any of the "thief" part in commendations or events.

I was actually hoping for some kind of leaderboard in arena to keep the competetive players active.

@tre-oni it was a crescent moon, I’ve heard it was black and dark purple/blue with a light gray accent.

Is this planned to be one of the rewards too? I didn't see it mentioned in the post, but further in here.

  • You should’ve have given arena one last event to see if the playtime went back up, so you could truly see if the low playtime was due to lack of interest or because there was nothing new.

    @kommodoreyenser

The thing is man, sea of thieves as a game is moving towards episodic story telling. It started out that way with Hungering deep, them Cursed sails, and then dark relic voyages etc...and then guess what? The community whined, and cried about Missing out on events, and time limited things so they stopped it all together.

They tried to solve this with Tall Tales and This has held the game back for years. They cant even touch certain islands or make certain changes to characters because of the always present tall tales.

As much as people whine and complain about time limited experiences they are important. They make it so you as a player choose to engage with that event or not. If you do choose then you gain an experience and a reward for your time. If you dont you miss out.

Trust me man, as a day one player its been nice to sit back and be like “eh do I want to do this years Festival of the damned event or do I just want to go play another game and buy the cosmetics when they become available in the outpost shop?”

But now with the re-introduction of time limited experiences and events it make us weigh the importance of playing the game during those times. “Do I play Destiny 2 or do I play sea of thieves? I should probably play sea of thieves cause theres that event going on right now.”

Brutal truth is the gaming industry is competitive, and Rare as a company are competing with other games for our time.

Some people will not be able to have every cosmetic. Thats just how the cookie crumbles. But it will make the player base prioritize their time when they choose which game to play.

Absolutely but we are referring to time limited things we are provided knowledge of, and then things which are sprung on the player base after the fact which is a completely different scenario. I too have been around since April 2018 (sadly I hated my original pirate enough that I reset it by starting another account, before the potion was a thing ) and therefore lost my original anniversary legend cosmetics among other things. I was informed and understood what I was going to lose/miss (I missed out on forsaken shores and cursed sails due to moving halfway across the US at the time so it wasn't a big loss for me)

I believe this current move would be akin to finally facing the shrouded ghost during one of those times of data loss incidents. A thrill that you got something really rare and then Rare saying "sorry but no, so close tho!" I am sure that makes players real eager to open their wallets in the emporium to continue to support the game...

  • @lizalaroo

I personally reached level 50 a while ago.
I do understand why arena is closing down, but I do believe it should have been done with a longer notice.
I have been slowly grinding the LSD and I am still 100 wins away. I am more than halfway there and it was one of the bigger goals for me. Having a month to get all my remaining wins would put me and I assume many others into position where we would have to spend all our free time in arena or the work we have put in so far will go to waste.

  • @musicmee still comes back to inability to find matches being a core issue regardless of the perceived reward for doing so.

Too late now anyways. It’s a shame, mistakes were made and now we are sitting in it haha

  • @ohhimark7298

Completely disagree with this. You know how many pirates in adventure mode would just “trade kills” its not that difficult to get two boats on a server. At least with arena you had the challenge of other ships trying to attack you. There really isn't any “cheesing” in arena. Sure everyone in a blue moon you would find that it happened, but they even disabled talking to other crews, to help keep it fair.

  • @neon-ic0n said in Saying Goodbye to The Arena:

but retroactive rewards... that always sucks.

This right here is what upsets me.
Arena going away is something that is understandable, but at the very least it would have been nice if some warning was given when it came to the cosmetics so those close to 50 could try to get it finished out and even get the chance to get the Good Boy ship.
Some sort of warning that the cosmetic could be available to be earned would have been nice, particularly in a game that circles on getting cosmetics as one of the main incentives.

  • @musicmee I heard it was crewed by the bald lady from crooks hollow... though those are just rumors!

  • @threelegjohn

Legendary Thief, and the Reapers faction would like to have a word with you...

  • Goodbye.

  • If it was say 240 wins and I'm only at 100 or something, fair enough I won't hit 240 by the deadline, but if I'm at 235 wins and you announce a deadline, I'm gonna go get those last few requirements. Arena was labeled as "on the back burner" not "soon to be dead and gone" had it been labeled as such I would have been 0laying more as I will now. But to swipe the rug out from casual Arena players and say well if you didn't play for at least a day and hit 5 you get nothing, and if you didn't try and max it out you are also excluded, leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Why not give us the time to try and earn it. If you never cared about Arena, you wont hit lvl 50 anytime soon. But and have been waiting for an update to it, like I thought would be coming, you are out of luck. I mean I am all for time limited stuff, but only when we know what that time limit is

  • Please please please make the current pirate legend set acquired by winning 240 games of arena obtainable elsewhere, I’ve been wanting that set but don’t want to waste the time trying to get it. Currently it takes about 10 minutes to find a game and each game lasts 15 minutes it’s just not realistic to play 100 hours to obtain the set.

  • @justsaiyen93 said in Saying Goodbye to The Arena:

Legendary Thief, and the Reapers faction would like to have a word with you...

90% of the players have achieved legendary thief with alliance server. And theres nothing about PvP with reaper except collecting the flags. You can still grind Pve for several hours vote up a reaper and sell it all. Make it stolen loot only maybe?

  • @lizalaroo said in Saying Goodbye to The Arena:

@indubitably1 Surely 'Dedicated' Arena players would play often so will be level 50 by the deadline and have gotten there organically before the deadline was announced. After all Arena has been running for approx. 2 years.

The option to buy a level is there within the game, some chose to level up this way as maybe their play time was sometimes limited, BUT regardless of how (it's up to the individual) they still got to level 50 so are eligible for the rewards.

Whilst you are understandably frustrated at not reaching 50, this is Rare's decision and way of celebrating the most dedicated Arena players and they feel it would not be fair to allow people to grind for it at the end, hence the cut off date.

If they were trying to celebrate "the most dedicated Arena players" why not reward the players with the most play time, matches played, or wins?

They chose to award those who were most concerned with "level" which is achievable through means other than playing arena.

I hope they reconsider and align their actions to be more in line with their "goals"

  • @threelegjohn

Yes, but was that the way the Developers intended for it to be achieved? No.
The community doesnt like PvP not the Devs. People will find away around PvP commendations and events. Its been done with alliance servers. To say the Devs are against PvP is stupid talk. They literally made a PvP faction designed to go steal and sink other boats. How the player chooses to use that tool is up to the player.

  • I'm ok with that, I get the mixed feelings but also, it's true, arena never took off as supposed. Please, however, PLEASE, respect the (huge amount of) time invested by the regular players and do not give the weapons earned at other players. We had limited-times cosmetics in the past like the golden first-year pirate lord cosmetics, they never were re-opened and shared, there's no reason to give the sword and other weapons to people who did not achieved them by playing the game...

  • @astrohh7557

Time yes, but I just don't have the desire to grind so hard in a short time.
I only usually jump in and have a few arena games now and then. Was slowly getting towards 240 wins. But that won't happen now.

I only have a few sessions per month on SoT these days. Game pass spoils me with too many great games and time is limited.

Be sad to see Arena go. Was fun for a quick play session.

  • Where is the Midnight Prowl Shipset ? All have forget this skin ?

  • @cptrainbow1928

I would like to say, however, that while I am content to see the Glorious and Triumphant Sea Dog sets go under the circumstances, I protest the removal of the Legendary weapons set. Though they may be a mark of prestige for many, their theme is not inherently tied to Arena Mode and so they should not be tossed aside. Not only that, but the Legendary set is otherwise ubiquitous! To have it be left incomplete would vex me greatly, as completing it has been one of my main reasons for doing Athena's work in the past year. Perhaps tie it to another equally difficult to achieve commendation, or, if you felt like being a bit more generous, give the players who had the commendation a Sea Dog weapon set unassociated with Pirate Legend. Please leave the Legendary weapons set available through some means or another. Anything is better than making them unobtainable!

In the news article, they state that they will be making a different set of Legendary Weapons to unlock to keep the set full after the disappearance of the LSD weapons.

  • I am absolutely sad about this announcement. I just started tapping into Arena under the wing of god-like sweat lord...training essentially...to get my skill up in being a better pirate. It makes me sad to see this area being phased out. I know it was a difficult decision to let it go, but this is going to lead those competitive folks to adventure and cause a potentially bad experience for them because they don't have a way of being able to train themselves to be a better pirate. I'm sad to say the least. Definitely going to use the time left to try and grind on sea dog commedations though.

If your only reason to go and get the arena ships is FOMO, you don't deserve them. That's the point of what they're saying.

  • @needsmokes

You make my point. Gamepass is a wonderful thing and there are 100s of games at your fingertips. As a developer how do you keep a player coming back to your game? Time limited events and cosmetics. FOMO unfortunately is a great business tool. Keep players attention with stories that they are a part of, make it seem like an episode of a show that they dont want to miss out on. Its then up to us as the player to prioritize what we do with the limited time we have in our lives.

  • @el-spaniardchi did you say you are upset that you didn't get something because you didn't want to grind?

  • Will the Legendary weapons be unlocked through a different commendation instead of legendary sea dog

  • @maxdragonrage said in Saying Goodbye to The Arena:

Will the Legendary weapons be unlocked through a different commendation instead of legendary sea dog

No. The announcement posts says they are going away when Arena closes, but there will be a different Pirate Legend set added.

  • @maxdragonrage

What does this mean for the Pirate Legend weapons and Victorious Sea Dog Blunderbuss when The Arena closes?

If you have unlocked these weapons for purchase, they will remain purchasable. If you have not unlocked these items, they will no longer be visible to you in the shops.

  • @grumpyw01f
It's not, it's the fact that I have earned 98% of it, but before I can get the last 2% it's swiped out from my grasp. Give a warning. That's arguably the best ship cosmetic in Arena and I missed it by would could have been 10 minutes logging in and buying a level.

  • I tough call, but a necessary one.

  • level 49 in seadogs :/

  • @maxdragonrage
No. They are remaining exclusive to those who achieved the Legendary Sea dog achievement.

They are however, making a new and different Pirate Legend weapon set available in adventure mode.

You still have till March 10th to unlock the current Pirate Legend weapons of you really want them.

  • @nokye Ooof! Bad luck... but you are still getting FIVE full ship sets :D
