New regions?

  • I'm sure this has probably been discussed more than once and in more than one place so apologies for any dupe of the topic but I wanted to know if there were any planned additions to the map regions, new environmental challenges etc.

Not just wanting to know the planned ones, but what sort of environmental challenges would other like to see in game?

Personally I'm in favour of a whole new northern region called the frozen fells, which would have blizzards and icebergs.
The blizzards could cause a damage effect similar to drowning whenever away from a heat source such as a lantern, reduce visibility and increase wind strength.
the icebergs would be islands that follow a moving path.

Generally the aesthetic would be barren and sparse with very little defing feature save shear cliffs, this would make location hunts harder to find and the steep cliffs offer great opportunity to store caves and vaults.

A new mob could take a similar role to the flame skellys but obviously blowing out ice instead and some lakes could be frozen over so walking on them makes you slide.

  • The last we heard, the developers said they were probably not going to expand out, but rather down, and that's what got us the sunken treasuries and shrines. As for what comes next?

    🤷‍♂️

Keep sailing and looking for clues, I guess. 😅

  • @laughsmaniacaly

Pretty sure we're not seeing the current map getting expanded, mostly due to server limitations.

However, Rare already found the cure for that, and we have all already witnessed it - the ability to teleport your ship to another world. From this point onwards, the sky is the limit. We could potentially use the portals to go anywhere. Any kind of world, any kind of biome.

If this is to happen at some point, I just hope it will not be another instanced adventure. I believe it is of much greater benefit for both Rare and the players, if the upcoming contents are open world instead.

  • @greengrimz it did technically speaking, get expanded out west and south so it’s possible we can see something out there at some point.
Probably not where the TT takes place, but there’s a lot of empty space down there for sure.

  • I could see a space for instanced encounter areas using the portals. Just make them brutally hard, give good rewards, and require players to come back to the main map in order to sell their spoils. The portal stones could light up or something to announce someone returning with loot on board.

I think they'd have to move all the portal rocks away from the outposts, or use a new set of portals, for this to work.

It has, yet here we go. xD

  • What if we did the old Fortnite approach and simply retextured some of the uppermost islands and landscape.

Basically we could reskin some islands and add in an environmental challenge to make the feeling of new areas but without the impact to map size.

The biggest issue, for me, is that the initial three regions all have the same basic feel to them but with a slightly different colour palette, there are no real environmental hazards specific to those areas like there is with the devil's roar.

It would be a welcomed change to start seeing some regional variation other than just the colour palette. Preferably something that makes each area have it's own challenges.

I disagree. The Devil's Roar is already a pain to be in, IMO, because the environmental hazards are not fun. There's no counterplay to them besides "run and hide on the ship," and generally the only times I see people go there are if they need commendations, if they want to be guaranteed left alone, or if they're grinding Order of Souls thanks to how skeleton voyages can be cheesed with geysers.

  • And docile penguins. We need docile penguins with succulent penguin meat.

  • @blam320

I can see your point that many people avoid the DR region because of the environmental hazard but it adds alot to the game in terms of impact and feeling, it's not all aesthetic but something physical lurking about.

In terms of the frozen idea I proposed, it's not so much a ship damage thing as it is a sort of new experience and localised issue. Although I do think that each area should have a greater variation from the others in more noticeable ways.

In terms of change however, if the map size isn't going to amend in future, then repurposing islands with new environmental texturing as part of a progressive story element is a good way of refreshing the world and progressing some narrative.

  • Long Before we get new regions, we need more stuff to do within the existing regions.

Last thing I'd want to see is a different variant to the Roar get introduced and then it just be the same tired GH/OOS/MA voyages we've already seen. It'd be cool to explore for a bit...and then it'd be a sparsely voyaged region like the Roar is today.

The only thing it would stand to do is make it even less likely to see another ship on the horizon...unless they increased the ship count per server along with the introduction...but I think we're at the limit for the OG Xbox One players as it is until they do some much better optimization...or transition play from those old consoles over to XCloud only.

  • Ice region?? earned my upvote!
As for technical limitations, im confused why some people state it as an obstable while Rare showed us the perfect solution... Portals.

We'll have the same server that takes us to the world of Sea of Thieves and portals will take you to other regions, then people wont whine about "IcE dOsEnT fIt tHe CarRibean!" and you can bypass the limitations.

If you ask me i would rather to expand the map and the players size but I understand the problem with old consoles, that being said i think that at some point Rare will have to stop supporting the older Xbox and just give them the normal SoT version.

From the main world you will be able to access these portals that would take you to other regions that behave like what we know.

  • Larger main area of adventure would require raising ship cap to 8-10 otherwise it will start feeling pretty empty. As it is, feels pretty barren some play sessions for me and then I find not one but two ships in the roar.

  • We just had a new region… well actually kinda a semi small region which are the Sunken kingdoms, The Coral Fortress, Few part of the Sea of the Dammed and expanded open seas over at North, West and South

I would much rather see The Devil Roar get much needed love and maybe even the Shores of gold before we open up new regions.

  • Ok, so I'm seeing a lot of feedback on the preference to improve the current areas more first which I can completely understand.

Things like making the areas have something specifically unique to them and give a replay able reasoning to those areas.

Now so e have mentioned not wanting the same things in a new setting which I think is sort of core to the game as it stands but could be worked on.
For example, having the factions give different quest types for the different regions.

My main question then would have to refine to this...

What would improve the current regions AND make them feel more unique?

  • @laughsmaniacaly said in New regions?:

For example, having the factions give different quest types for the different regions.

Exactly this. The current crop of voyage types for each faction are fine. Stale...but fine.

Introduce a handful of NEW voyage types specific to each region. Have them be more bilge rat / mercenary type voyages that are less faction specific and more adventure based (like Athena voyages try to be).

Maybe a phantom horde boss battle at Old Faithful that speaks to the lore of the Morningstar. Maybe puzzles at Wanderers Refuge that speak to the tales of the Wild Rose that get capped off with a battle against Rooke and her crew in waves. I'd love to see them develop voyages that speak to the original 9 tall tales. The pre-Disney lore is awesome...DO STUFF WITH IT.

What would improve the current regions AND make them feel more unique?

Unique emergent enemies per region would also be cool. Example...make the Shores of Plenty the place for the Ocean Crawlers, Ancient Isles for Phantoms, and the various Skeleton types that you see on OOS voyages in The Wilds.

  • @sweetsandman
I agree with so much of this

  • Honestly how often do you see crews in the Devils Roar I think they need to rework that zone to make it more active
