Is making the grind for Gold Curse just a little bit less grindy an option?

  • My friend has somehow gathered up the determination to reach gold curse, and just has to do SoG three more times. However, this has taken them almost 5 months now and it is really not fun. The first time through a tall tale is quite fun, but after that, no.
I did 100% all the Pirate's Life tall tales but only because they were enjoyable - and also because I had been rewatching PoTC .
But, that's beside the point. Five times on each tall tale+100% on each of them is too grindy in my opinion, and is just plain lazy, to be honest. I'm sure many people agree and disagree, and making it less grindy would be unfair for people who did grind it out, but it's deterring new and old players alike, me being one of them.
It would mean so much just to lower the amount of times completed on each tall tale, even just by one, to make it less grindy. Take the shores of gold, for example. Getting all the vaults done takes around 15-30 minutes by itself. Then there is all the parkour and fighting which must be done. Finally, after you defeat the Gold Hoarder and get the Tall Tale complete, your checkpoint goes away. Which is fine except that checkpoint is the only checkpoint in the tall tale and it gives you the checkpoint the moment you get the gold hoarder's coin.
I see people say the tall tale checkpoint glitch is stupid, and I totally agree. But people do this so they DON'T have to grind every completion from the start and go through the same story over and over and over again.
I'm curious as where the hearts of the forums' users lie over this. What do you guys think? Too grindy or is it fine?

  • @scurvywoof they already made it easier with the checkpoint system. It’s supposed to be a prestigious curse. No reason to make it easier to obtain.

Rare have already agreed that doing the same take 5 times is too much, so they’ve fixed that with the latest TTs. I think it would be a bad idea to retroactively remove some of the grind it takes to get the curse because it would be less special overall.

  • @ninja-naranja I understand. But take the Shores of Gold. It has one checkpoint, and it’s only when you first receive the Gold Hoarder’s Coin. There are non half way through the jumps and combat so using the checkpoint only removes the tinies amount of the Shores of Gold grind.
I totally understand your point though. Thank you!

  • @scurvywoof I did it on a 2nd account over a weekend pretty much. maybe 20 hrs of gameplay

  • Did this within the first year without checkpoints. If you really want it, it's not that hard to achieve.

  • Yeah, I agree it is grindy. Does not mean it has to change.
I like the Tall Tales, but I feel no pressure to do the originals all five times. So I haven't.
Let those that have accomplished this, flex the curse all they want. They deserve it.
My opinion is that it's one of the ugliest curses, despite having the most prestige.

Like the Arena requirement for two hundred-fifty wins for the Legendary weapons, my pirate can accept not attaining that status either.

But I know it is there should I change my mind.

Agree, the Tall Tales are quite easy by design as a means to be accessible to their broad player base. Accessibility is not an issue with this one, it's just a time investment.

I will say that certain criticisms of this goal certainly are not misplaced. The goal has been in the game for so long that it doesn't make sense to change it at this point, but moving forward I do wish replay value of this kind of content would be extended in a more substantial way than locking rewards behind simple repetition of the task.

"A Pirates Life" gave good examples of how they can give replayability to Tall Tales in the way that they gave plenty of "side quest" commendations that you have to explore for and may need to revisit the Tale for. The Heart of Fire tale also brought improvement by allowing the player a different gameplay experience through multiple paths to choose from.

  • I find the argument that you shouldn't have to "repeat" quests to unlock stuff seem baseless given the broader game you are discussing. Unlocking titles, cosmetics, or completing commendations throughout the ENTIRE game involves this. Do this 25-50 times, turn in 100 of that, reach grade "X" this many times, etc. Lets not get into gaining levels in a specific faction.

That being said as someone who has already done this, I would be satisfied if they either awarded the variable gold curse again to those who completed before the date it changes. Once more it should vary every time it equips to avoid the original complaint.

Just like any other change to ease something, you need to reward the dedicated players who completed it before with something unique to honor your player base and show everyone isn't just a dollar sign.

  • It's fine easily completed within a week now with checkpoints.

Before checkpoints it took easily twice as long with people trolling.

  • Thanks for the feedback!

@scurvywoof I mean is the gold curse in general worth all the time it takes to get it? Even if you have it, it's kinda meh...i've seen a dude that had it in arena and i heard some kid say to the guy something along the lines of "oh you have the gold curse, big deal" so if your just gonna be disrespected what's the point of the grind y'know?

Well, you just get disrespected in general in Arena lol... The other was jealous/wanted to make the curse wearer insecure about the time they spent getting it.

  • I turned the Shores of Gold into a speedrun, stop watch and all. It really helps getting through the repetition. My fastest time from vote to completion was 57 mins. I also recommend bringing an empty treasure chest to store the medallions.

  • @leadvolley

Yes it was. I wear mine with pride of the achievement of earning it in the days without a checkpoint

  • Surprised people still go for this curse... if I had known that they would change it from random (and thus interesting) to standardized (uh, boring), I wouldn't have bothered getting it.

I think it is a cool one to get, even if some random kid in arena claims they were not impressed. They obviously noticed it. If they didn’t comment on any of the other unlockable cosmetics then that should say something.

Doesn't matter if they agree or not, if they don't update the older TTs, the issue remains and doing the TTs 5 times is boring.

Not to mention the Shores of Gold has barely any checkpoints to speak off.

  • @scurvywoof No

  • @sussybakastyle Ok.

  • I never bothered to do all of them 5 times each. Didn't want to subject myself to something I didn't find fun or interesting. Is the gold curse kinda cool, yes. Is it worth 20 some hours of torturous grind in my mind, no. But that's just me. If you want to do it either for the enjoyment, a sense of completing everything, or the curse cosmetic...all the power to you. No one is forcing you to do it or not do it. I think its fine the way it is currently. But like others have said rare noticed people disliked having to do them that many times and are keeping it in mind for future content. Just don't expect them to change old content as it would be a bit of a slap in the face for people that did it when it was harder and diminish the specialness of it.
