DLSS for Sea of Thieves

  • Any thoughts? I'd like this to be a feature as well as some future optimization :) Especially outposts and islands.

  • For the uninitiated, what even is DLSS?

I had to Google it. 😅

DLSS stands for deep learning super sampling. It's a type of video rendering technique that looks to boost framerates by rendering frames at a lower resolution than displayed and using deep learning, a type of AI, to upscale the frames so that they look as sharp as expected at the native resolution.

That said it basically let's lower high end video cards push more frames by upscaling the image to 2k or 4k rather than rendering it at 2k or 4k.

for example using Cyberpunk 2077 at ita absolute highest setting my rig can push about 35 fps @2k. with DLSS on I can get 65-70.

    edit:

The amd equivalent is called Fidelity Super Resolution (fsr). I mention this because amd cards can benefit too and I think the Series X|S could as well.

  • @captain-coel Correct me if I am wrong but it can also be used to just boost fps, as upscaling the resolution to 4k or 2k is not necessary. Basically it is a new method of game rendering. On the Nvidia preview video it was mentioned that fps could possibly be even doubled.

  • @potatotatoe yes, but it still does this via upscaling. Remember DLSS only works on RTX cards by Nvidia. So even if you are trying to use it for a 1080 display, it will upscale from a lower resolution render. DLSS works by taking an image at 1 resolution and then makes it bigger and then makes it look good again rather than blurry.

So yes you can use it for more fps, but it does so by rendering at a lower resolution and upscaling to a bigger one.
