Fix open crew please!

  • Hi,

I play adventure mode and often use open crew to find a crew. Typically if I play a Galleon it will spawn with 2 people and 90% of the time it turns out to be waste of time because they leave before the ship has even departed. Presumably because there's only 2 people?!

I'd rather wait ~5 minutes and get a full crew than spend ages playing on a 1 man galleon or face the prospect of quitting to hopefully find a full crew.

It seems to be designed for people who want to get a game instantly and have no patience to wait. I'm sure some of us would rather wait a bit longer to get a full crew. If this can be addressed that would be great, or at least add it as an option to only join game if there's a full crew.

    Thanks in advance

  • Sounds to be more a player issue than the open crew.

Like you said. Nobody likes to wait and rather join a full crew galleon than 2

  • Oddly though this issue is less apparent with a Brig or Sloop. Quite often a Brig will spawn with 3 players, whereas a Galleon will often spawn with 2 players. The problem here is that people often quit because of this, which really impacts the game experience.

  • I would strongly recommend not using open-crew so:

    A. Play on a sloop

    B. Play with friends

    C. Use the offical SoT discord and go to looking for group, if your not comfortable with using a mic they even have an option for that

  • If you want to be as efficient as possible in open crew

start a closed crew brig. This increases the chance of you getting a good ping

get some supplies set up your emissary plan your adventure then open your crew when you've already arrived at or started whatever you want to do

It's the best chance of getting something done in open crew in a decent amount of time.

Galleon is too much for open crew most of the time. Sloop is fine but opens you up to getting stuck with someone that can't be brigged

Open crew isn't perfect but people can get A LOT done in open crew that they won't be able to soloing

Gotta take the lead and communicate well and whatever happens happens. There will be negative experiences but you just keep at it and the victories start adding up.

It's very important to get in tune with your strengths and weaknesses as a pirate, player and personality.

Some situations need to be bailed on
    Some need your investment

Get real good at reading the situation and the environment and the crew and open crew becomes more of a positive than a negative. Observe everything. How people act what they are saying how they are saying it what they are doing. Strengthen your gut feelings then just listen to your gut every time about when a server/crew/situation is going to be worth the time and effort.

  • @exav0r Quoting my reply from a different thread:

"I don't have many discord friends for this game yet due to private reasons and in the beginning I always went solo sloop. Nowadays I regularly use open crews because a second hand is just always helpful. In case of emergency, I could still operate the ship alone if I can't rely on my mate in that situation.

What I do is usually join a server with closed crew, set my ship skin voyage etc. and upon casting off I change to open crew.
People who join then will immediately find out what I'm up to and those who don't want to join my voyage usually disconnect again very soon afterwards.
Those who stay often stick a long time to me and we have a good time which is great.
So if I set sails to do missions for the Merchant Alliance I know that those people who stick with me are truly dedicated ones lol.

Just a walkaround how to get the thing you want."

This works the best obviously for sloops that don't necessarily require a second man in order to be used efficiently.
For galleons you better use a premade group of friends because if people let you down by disconnecting or acting disorderly then you're pretty much doomed if proper reinforcements don't arrive in time.

  • personally, i would never invest much into an open crew. that includes pre-supplying, fixing on a desired voyage, etc. they seem to go off the rails too often to justify the effort.

imo the best way to do open crew is to simply hop until you find a crew mid-voyage that is doing something almost interesting. sure, it takes longer to find a crew this way, but you waste far less time.

  • Thanks

Have tried Discord but quite often I will end up with a group of Elitists who imo take the game far too seriously. I am best described as a casual weekend player, so naturally I'm no expert. Also, Discord users tend to insist that I use the voice chat on Discord rather than that of in-game. I prefer to use the game's own built in voice chat functionality.

I've not tried LFG on Xbox live. I find Xbox app to be a bit clunky. How does that work as far as LFG is concerned on PC?
