Unbearable Character Teleporting (SOLVED)

  • I have been looking for a solution to this problem, but all I find is always posts made 3 years ago that have no effect on the problem.

I recently got Sea of Thieves and have been having a lot of fun, but... At random intervals, usually 30 minutes into playthrough or straight-up as I'm loading into the game is this annoying bug that really hinders my gameplay. It's where my character moves in stuttering movements (not frame drops or anything else) and teleports around the place, whereas it teleports me back to a place I have already been, or straight up teleporting me off my ship or a bridge. I could go on for hours on how this teleporting makes it impossible to play the game. Usually (in the 30 minute playthroughs) the teleporting starts when I arrive at an outpost and try to sell my loot, which is basically impossible as it keeps teleporting me off the bridge while I try to head to the seller.

This is the Microsoft Store version, and I have found in some other posts that Microsoft Store is unreliable. This is my first point: Does anyone else on Microsoft Store have this problem? Or do people on other platforms have this teleporting problem too (e.g. steam)? My second point is: Is this problem fixable? I have already checked that my Windows 10 is up to date, though I haven't really gone into detail on it.

I think this problem might have something to do with people having problems on Xbox One with the stuttering, too, as the Microsoft Store account is basically the Xbox account.

So, please be blunt with me: Is there a way to fix this? If not, do other platforms like Steam have this problem? If the answer to the second question is no, then tell me if I should uninstall Sea of Thieves on Microsoft Store to switch to the Steam Version. (Also, I don't know if data is transferrable from Microsoft Store to Steam)

**Note: Yes, this is a lengthy post, and I'm not sure if it is up to this forum's guidelines. BUT, I need to make sure that there are people with similar experience and those who can tell me what to do. Thank you. **

  • This is usually a result of packet loss. Your position is being reset to where the server thinks you should be because it is not receiving updated information from your client. You will try to move, this information will get lost and then when the server does receive a packet that says "I am here" the server responds with a "nope, you should be here" and you get moved back. I've played both the Steam and Windows Store versions, and this isn't normal behaviour unless you're having connection problems. Does the in-game ping fluctuate at all when this happens?

It's possible that the game traffic is overloading your network or there is an issue with the route between your modem to your ISP to the game server data centers.

Are you playing via wired or wireless connection to your router/modem? If you're playing wireless, make sure the connection is good. Make sure there isn't a lot of network noise if you have other people using the same network. Switch to wired and see if the problem gets fixed.

You could try resetting the router by unplugging it for 10-20 seconds and then plugging it back in. Might even be worthwhile trying this with the modem also. If that doesn't work it you could try connecting your PC directly to the modem temporarily to see if the problem goes away. If it does, then it's likely your router having issues and dropping the packets.

Regarding moving to Steam: Yes, the data is shared provided you log in with the same XBox account when playing through Steam, but if you're having issues like this on MS store, it's likely to happen on Steam also.

  • @d3adst1ck While this happens, the frame rate doesn't drop whatsoever. It is literally just teleporting and nothing else. I still need to check the ping, though.

As for if I am wireless or not, yes, I am. I can try connecting an ethernet cable and see if that works, but after trying a lot of solutions I am uncertain if it will work or not, but I will still try.

With the unplugging of the router, it's a bit of a last hope moment, but I will still try if all else fails.

If NOTHING here works, then I guess the game doesn't want me to play. Even while I was installing the game the download constantly reset just as it was nearly done. It's like a personal vendetta for me...

Anyways, I'm too tired from searching countless forums to try now, but I can update you when I try these. Though as another note to keep in mind, this 'packet- loss' thing seems to happen SPECIFICALLY on islands, outposts more so.

  • I have more then adequate internet speed with generally a ping of 24 milliseconds/ping delay on average. I play on Xbox One X. When in chase players or AI in Spint are faster than me. Jumping yes is a lag exploit that’s been around for ages even today and it still works. Just watch the pro Twitchers jumping non stop in every action the perform.

  • Aha! This has seemed to work. All it took was a bit of tinkering with the ethernet cable and the discovery of a clogged connection and there we go!

For those wondering EXACTLY what I did, here it is:

    • Switched to wired connection (you need an ethernet cable and powerline adaptor for it)

    • Turned router (or a powerline adaptor connected to it, since that works better) on and off, (I have a wired version connected by ethernet cables going around the house, turning it on and off helps unclog the connection, which was a huge factor in this bug) not sure if it works for wireless routers.

Still not sure why this only happened in Sea of Thieves, probably specific connection stuff. If you don't have the option for wired connection (which I doubt) then just try restarting the router. I can't really give much advice on only-wireless connection, though. You would need to find someone to help you.

EDIT MADE ON 17TH OF FEBUARY: If your powerline adaptor connected to the router is constantly giving you problems (low download speed and constant connection clogging etc.) then I would recommend getting a new one. Having to constantly turn it on and off is kind of tedious.

    Thank you for the advice!
