Player Honor/Rep System

  • I was curious as to what others think about adding some sort of honor or player rep system.

It would be similar to more of like Red Dead Redemption in a way. Giving gifts, joining an alliance, and Repairing other players ships could increase it. Sinking other ships, stealing loot, and attacking alliance members would decrease it.

This isn’t to promote passive play, but rather give a system to show how other players could be expected to act. Seeing perhaps a Buccaneer symbol (for instance meaning high honor) next to a player would indicate they are often friendlier. And a scoundrel symbol (meaning low honor) would indicate they do hostile things typically?

It would make for interesting interactions I think. Trusting a Buccaneer could be a smart idea, but then again, who knows? Perhaps a scoundrel built his honor for a cover? It would leave the ambiguity of player Encounters in tact while also making players consider their choices as to whether or not it’ll make them look more threatening.

  • No to yelp reviews for pirates

They are pirates they are not to be trusted. Like Everlast sang pirates would rob their mothers for the ends.

  • @wolfmanbush
I wouldn’t say it’s a Yelp review. No one is reviewing anything. More of a point system, like an alignment.

a rating is only as strong as the system that allows it and it's not hard for people to manipulate it for future deception via alliance servers

Rack rating up in alliance servers
use it to trick naive people
rating doesn't go down because you work around the system but still take the loot

What does it add to the game? Veteran players know better and new players aren't really in any position to stop someone anyway no matter what their rating is

  • @grilledcheese10 God no.
The whole point of a pvpve sandbox is that you and you alone are responsible for your own success or failure, and the game gives you as little help as possible.
When it comes to trusting other pirates, you are supposed to use your own judgment, not replace it with some algorithm.

  • These types of systems are incredibly exploitable rendering them useless. Get bad rep? Spend a few minutes doing good chores and it's fixed. You can also end up getting bad rep for trying to protect yourself. Shooting first in defense gives you bad rep, so now you're restricted in how you play. Players can tank your reputation by just being a nuisance and forcing you to kill them so they'll do this on purpose. A lot of the events have giving "gifts" of loot to other players, so now you get bad rep for accepting gifts.

It makes the entire game worse. What's the point?

That’s kind of what I was hoping for. People exploiting it to seem friendly and use it to trick people who are too trusting. It could allow for some interesting plays and backstabs.

I wouldn’t say useless. It could be really interesting to see how reapers use high rep to trick more gullible players. That’s kind of the point I was hoping for
