Volcano insta death

  • Ok, I really like the volcanos and the DR because it adds a whole new aspect to the game of being careful near islands.
BUT when you're in a sloop, doesn't matter if you're with two or one, you will most definitely die. Because when you get hit the chances of both getting hit are so high, due to the small space. And in my experience, even if your ship is fully repaired, when you come back from the death your ship is already sinking or is beyond saving.

So in conclusion: the volcanos are great and add a lot to the game, but please make it a little less immediate death when you're in a sloop, that would be very appreciated.

You would have loved the devil's roar when it first came out back in 2018: the volcanoes erupted every 10 minutes, and every other volley of rocks was guaranteed to hit your ship. Rare had to tone it down not once, but twice!

Despite the difficulty in sailing a sloop in that region, there are strategies you can use to stay safe:

    • Do not approach any island with an erupting volcano- better to wait outside its range for 10 minutes (good time to catch some devilfish) than to risk dying and sinking.
    • If you're at an island when an earthquake strikes, run to your ship immediately and turn it towards the open sea. Rotate the sails to catch the wind if you have the time, then stand ready. If the earthquake stops, you can return to the island, but if smoke starts belching out of the volcano, you need to lower sails and get out of there immediately.
    • Contrary to first impressions, you're actually safer on the top deck while your ship is sailing away. Here's why: the biggest contributing factor to your ship sinking is that the rock kills you when it hits. So, you can avoid this by closely watching the sky, and jumping overboard if it looks like a rock is gonna hit. If it misses, no problem; your ship is still sailing away from danger and you can simply take a mermaid back. If your ship is hit, you can mermaid back before it sinks. Even if the mast is downed, you still have enough time to swim back your ship and repair things before it sinks. Sloops are tough for their size, and take longer than other ships to sink (assuming equal number of holes).

Hope this helps in your future excursions to the roar!

  • It’s not that your in a sloop. It’s that your playing alone.

There is no sympathy for self inflicted wounds.

  • @jasmein03m one of you stay on the wheel, the other one under deck all the way at the front...problem solved
These rocks hit you so rarely it doesn't even matter...should have been here when they introduced the DR...that time it was nearly impossible to sail into the roar with any other ship than the galleon

  • @limbicfanatic Yes, this some good advice and most of it I already do when taking quests in the DR.
But this happened after fighting with a ghostship in the most far downright corner of the map next to a volcanorock(?). We had no holes, but then we just got hit by the volcano that just started erupting without any warning like earthquakes whatsoever. And we both died because we were both still standing at the canons looking at the ghostship sinking to the bottom of the sea.

  • If your solo. Be wiser around islands with Volcanos...
If crew, always have someone below deck. 50/50 they will survive any hit and can (luck) take control if the one above dies.

  • You don't die in 1 hit while below decks - set your course, take cover, and be ready to repair and munch on some food.

The aforementioned tactic of jumping overboard before getting hit is also a good 1 (and 1 I admittedly never tried 😅).

I could have sworn they could, but my first-hand experience is pretty outdated (I don't go to the roar much anymore). Was this changed when Rare reduced explosion damage based on distance from the source? Because that would make the most sense.

  • Volcanos give plenty of warning before erupting, that should be enough time to make it off the island and into a safe spot. If not, well that's the risk of sailing in the Devil's Roar.

Just to clarify, they CAN kill you in 1 hit when belowdeck, but NOT if you're at full health. Then again, I guess that probably goes without saying.
