Would love to see more ship sets with sails that are "tattered and ripped"

  • Just what the title says. I have quite a few ship sets and many sails, but I've noticed that I tend to keep using the Kraken sails (even when they don't match the rest of the ship) because I like the "tattered" look to them. Nearly all other sails I own are whole, and a full square when lowered and sailing.

I have found that I really prefer the "tattered/ripped" look to sails simply because it's easier to see ahead of you when you're at the wheel. I never have problems seeing in front of me with the Kraken sails thanks to all the rips and gaps in it. But when I put a solid sail set on my ship, sometimes it just completely blocks my view and I can't see anything. I have to either keep going halfway down the stairs and back up to see something in front of me or raise the sail up a bit sometimes (I play on a Sloop 80-90% of the time).

I'd love to see more ship sets in the future with the tattered sails. They are so much better for visibility when steering the ship a lot of the time. Plus, not to mention they look pretty cool as well. It makes your Pirate look like you've weathered a few storms and lived to tell the tale. 😎👍🌊🌨💣⚓💜

  • The style of the kraken sails is awesome, I would like to have more clothes and ship cosmetics like the Kraken set, so My pirate would look more like a spooky dark pirate! hahaha But yeah, as u said, it really creates the advantatge of looking at the bottom of the sail cuz of that... We need more DARK and SPOOKY COSMEETICS!!! HAAIL KRAAKEN! LOORD OF THE SEAAAS... (until something scarier and bigger makes his way to the sea of Thieves waters...)

    Yehaaaaa!!!
Spread the cuurse in the seaas!!

  • @spiralout46and2 I agree but at the same time when the Kraken sails came out you had a bunch of angry people shouting that they worked hard for the ghost set and that only it should have tattered sails

  • I agree, it would be nice to have more variety of sails. It would also be nice to see more generic sails (i.e., striped patterns, different color combinations).

  • @Nukdar Yesssss lol. 😄I would love more dark and spooky sets too! I know the ghost set kind of has that going for it already, but still... I really want more creative sets with tattered sails! My ship looks funny and mismatched most of the time because I'll do the hull, figurehead, cannons, capstan and wheel with one theme.... and then, Kraken sails lol.😂🤷‍♀️ But I figure, if it makes it so much easier to see from the wheel without always having to go up and down the stairs to see how I'm approaching an island, or having to ride with the sail raised up a bit, then I'd rather use the Kraken sails so I can stay on the wheel lol. 😎🌊⛵🐙 Hail Kraken, Lord of the Seeaaaas lol!!! 😄👏🎉🐙🌊👍

@Zormis Yeah I get that too. 🤔 But the tattered sails is too cool a design for a big pirate game like this, it's practically built in to the pirate universe, just like a hook hand or a peg leg. It shouldn't be held back. People with the ghost sails have something very unique in that it glows like it does. Other pirates notice that across the map, not the tattered sails. Like I said, the main reason I like it is for the functionality of it (you can see better), but it does look awesome on a ship too. I'm a Pirate Legend myself, but I'm not the kind of person that likes to hoard things to myself. I'd love to see more tattered sets released! 😊👍⛵✨

I really wish I had the Wailing Barnacle sails now. They're really pretty and tattered. I wasn't active on SoT during that event, so I missed out... 😞😭💔

Or maybe bring in another really cool, spooky looking set with tattered sails and make it only available for Pirate Legends to obtain, through special missions or commendations etc. That might be a good balance if they want to keep a smaller percentage of the ship sets released with tattered sails.

But please Rare, I'd like more than the Kraken sails to use all the time, but with the rips and gaps like the Kraken sails...🤔🐙 Some un-Krakened Kraken sails? You know what I mean lol.😄👍⛵🐙🌊⚓💣💀💙

  • I always use the Wailing Barnacle Sails for my Powder Puff Blue Girlie Ship livery. I love the tears and holes in the sails. I think they give you (just) the slightest wee advantage with visibility.

I would like to see more cosmetics all across the board. So more sails with tears is a YES.

  • @viperishemu2992 Yes! 😄I just wrote that above you, that I wish so badly that I'd been active on SoT when the Wailing Barnacle set was available lol. I love the colors and would use it all the time. And of course, the rips and holes in it do help a lot from a functional viewpoint as well. I hope that in some way, they are made available again one day. 😊👍🤞😇

Or better yet, more sails with tears! Yessss, I hope Rare stops holding these back and makes the game beautiful with them a little more.😎👌🌊⛵😊💜

You say you like sails that look weathered? That's the point of the tattered ones. The kraken sails, Wilds sails, Bone Crusher sails, sails of the Wailing Barnicle, and the Ghost sails are the only ripped sails I can remember, and that is due to the fact that it fits their theme. The kraken set is a symbol of a ship which has been through battles with the beasts, and has damage to show for it. The Wilds is not the most hospitable of places, and the sails match (though the Forsaken Ashes sails don't, oddly). The Bone crusher sails have been through many a battle, shown by the patch torn out by a cannon and replaced with an off-color section stitched on, and the smaller bullet holes throughout, while the set of the Wailing Barnicle was recovered from the seafloor after the ship itself sunk. The Ghost sails are a sign of a pirate who has journeyed long and far, and the wear on them proves it.
All of these were thought out to have these rips, and while a few more dark and damaged sets couldn't hurt, it's not the only thing they should focus on. With the soon coming Pirate Emporium, you'll be able to get a slightly off version of the set of the Wailing Barnicle soon enough, along with the other limited ones I mentioned. Also, Rare patched a hole in one of the sails (either the Wilds one or the Bone Crusher ones, can't recall which) because it was too useful to see through, so complain about only using one too much and they might remove it. They're tattered for visual effect, not for exploiting the transparent sections.

  • @spiralout46and2 I disagree. Everything already looks so worn, old, rotten, and tattered if you look closely enough. I would like to see the opposite. Clothes, and ships, that are pristine and clean.

  • @zormis
Yeah, that was quite funny with the "I'm the only pirate allowed to have tattered sails" (not even the same design).

They must have had a heart attack when the Marauder pistol came out and the Ebony and Ferryman's were no longer the only one with a crosshair of sorts.

  • @ultmateragnarok
Yes, of course. All of the sails with those sets have a bit of "story" behind them and yes I fully understand that sets like the Kraken one, for example, signify a Pirate that has been through a Kraken fight and has the 'battle scars' (aka the ripped sails) to show for it. Of course I understand all of that. And yes I know that certain sets will be brought back in the Emporium with slight color/graphic changes from the originals to give people that don't already own them the chance to buy them again.

But, a few things. First, I feel very confident in saying that the Kraken set is not going to be removed from the game. Especially because one forum user (me) said that they use it all the time lol. 😮😅👍

Second, I'm not "complaining." I just mean that I use it all of the time because it's the most practical from a sailing stand point, and I'd love to see more sails in the future like this. It doesn't have to be exactly tattered like the Kraken set, but I'd love to just see more tattered sails in general. Again, not complaining. Never once did I write in a 'negative' sort of way. This forum is for feedback and suggestions; that's all it is.

Third, and please let me emphasize this. Looking through the gaps in the Kraken sails to see in front of you is not an "exploit" of the game. Please research what "exploiting a game" is. Per Wikipedia, "In video games, an exploit is the use of a bug or glitch by a player to their advantage in a manner not intended by the game's designers." I have not purposely caused any bug or glitch to the sails. Are the rips in any tattered sails in the game a bug? No. Is it a glitch? No. They are 100% created purposely like this by Rare. This is something put in the game by the Developers and I, as a player, am using it as intended. This is why they cost more in-game Gold and why you spend 20,000 more for these sails. It is not an exploit. Thank you.

    @Galactic-Geek
I do love the look of clean, solid sails and sets too. It looks more polished and nicer overall. The only downside for me is from a sailing perspective when the sails block the view, but yes, many of the sets look amazing when applying them on the ship. I agree with you there.👍

  • @spiralout46and2 The sails block the view on ships for a reason - to facilitate teamwork and communication. If you roll up your sails to see, then you're hurting your ship's speed by being a lazybeard instead of working with your crew or taking the 3 seconds needed to actually look for yourself.

Yes, and that's what I normally do when I'm playing with someone, and as I mentioned before, I often go back and forth having to go up and down the stairs and back to the wheel to see. I don't ride around in the whole game with the sails slightly raised, come on now lol...🤦‍♀️ But I also sometimes play solo on a sloop, so in that case like when I'm pulling up to an Outpost or a Seapost and I'm trying to aim and steer to be able to stop alongside the dock, then yes I might raise them a slight little bit to be able to see as I'm approaching the dock so I know I'm coming in at the right angle and speed. That is not being a "lazybeard", it's playing the game. My goodness, honestly...

    People need to lighten up.

Just saying I think tattered sails are cool, would love to see more. That's it. Literally, it. If everyone is done nitpicking and policing how I play my own game now and telling me how I'm wrong because I don't sail around in a video game and play like them, maybe a little positivity and smiles and laughs would start rolling through these forums and they might be more enjoyable to post on. Geeze, man... 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️💜

  • I quite like the ripped and torn sails too. There’s an eeriness about them that appeals to me. I love the sails the skellys roll with.

Either way, Halloween is nearby, hopefully we get something like this then :)

  • @spiralout46and2 Wasn't meant to be mean, was only a statement as a matter of fact.

    Also, as per your request:
    😁😀😆😂😅😄😊😏🙃

@Kaloudz I'm fine with having torn sails, even the fact that they don't realistically slow you down like they should. I just don't think the minor benefit that they offer in terms of visibility is really worth it. Furthermore, I hate seeing the edges of torn sails, like with the kraken sails, somehow defy gravity when you pull them up as if they were one solid piece when they obviously aren't. Those taters should hang and flop, but they're still held together by some invisible, magical force. Heck, being kraken sails, for all we know it could be invisible ink! 🙄

  • @galactic-geek

    Hey buddy!

Totally hear you on the functional side of how tatty sails should work, but speaking totally from an aesthetic perspective, I dig ‘em.

I agree though, when I wear them, I do ponder how they ‘catch wind’, so to speak. Not too unlike how a parachute would function with a tear.

Whatever the case, I’m a sucker for them. My favourite sails, hands down, are the festival of the damned though, they look so cool.

Just wish we had colour choices. I’d love to shader them in different colours. Same as the illuminate green PL stuff, I’d love pink, orange, yellow etc...

(I say all of that with no knowledge of the lore).

  • @kaloudz You're missing my point. I'm fine with the idea that it still catches wind (for gameplay balance purposes), despite not being realistic. What bothers me is that certain ragged tears defy gravity as you pull the sails up, despite not having anything to support said individual tears - this is most prominently seen near the corners of the kraken sails.

  • @galactic-geek I agree and also disagree, i like the idea of new looking ship parts and even nothing items but having the opposite of literally ripped sails etc would also be cool too, i get what you mean but i feel having sails which are fully worn and hulls etc would be fun. Nice point though
