[TLDR: Read the title.]
Hey, I just recently started playing the game for the anniversary update, and I’m loving it so far! I tend to be the kind of geek who obsesses over the continuity and lore of the fictional things I’m a fan of, so I was wondering a few things about the “Expanded Universe” of Sea of Thieves:
-
From what I’ve read and seen from some of Rare’s announcements and videos, it seems like the Tales from the Sea of Thieves and Sea of Thieves: Athena’s Fortune books definitely involved the game’s developers’ guidance, insight, and responsibility and is recognized by them as the official lore (especially Tales ...as for Fortune, sometimes they’ll say things like how it establishes so much lore and answers so many of the fans’ questions, but then also they will act as if they don’t know what’s in the book before it was officially released, which seems a little questionable...?). But, while it does seem like Sea of Thieves: The Comic Series has the developers’ general approval and acknowledgement, there is not much I can find as far as specific quotes or statements or anything go regarding how deep their involvement in and sanctioning of the stories the comics tell actually is (if there is any to begin with). Do the comics genuinely tie in with the game at all and respect its canonical lore and world, or are they actually mostly unrelated pirate stories merely branded as official Sea of Thieves content as a cash grab?
-
The Art of Sea of Thieves book clearly would be canonical if it discusses any information pertinent to the game’s lore at all, since it comes directly from Rare themselves, but does any such information exist in the book, or is it all only real-world behind-the-scenes and developmental information?
-
Finally, for when I do get my hands on these materials, I would like to know any chronological information I should be aware of when reading. From what I understand, Tales is written like an old journal found in the present-day Sea of Thieves world, so that could best be read last, I guess, since, in-universe, it exists in the present-day perspective for me to read as if I picked it up somewhere in the game, right? But Fortune is written like an actual novel and takes place long before the game, right? So I should probably read that first? And what about the comics; they are also written as a traditional narrative it seems, so are the events of their story set before, after, or during Fortune or the game?
Thanks!
