Are the Comics/Art Book Canon? And What’s the Order?

  • [TLDR: Read the title.]

Hey, I just recently started playing the game for the anniversary update, and I’m loving it so far! I tend to be the kind of geek who obsesses over the continuity and lore of the fictional things I’m a fan of, so I was wondering a few things about the “Expanded Universe” of Sea of Thieves:

    1. From what I’ve read and seen from some of Rare’s announcements and videos, it seems like the Tales from the Sea of Thieves and Sea of Thieves: Athena’s Fortune books definitely involved the game’s developers’ guidance, insight, and responsibility and is recognized by them as the official lore (especially Tales ...as for Fortune, sometimes they’ll say things like how it establishes so much lore and answers so many of the fans’ questions, but then also they will act as if they don’t know what’s in the book before it was officially released, which seems a little questionable...?). But, while it does seem like Sea of Thieves: The Comic Series has the developers’ general approval and acknowledgement, there is not much I can find as far as specific quotes or statements or anything go regarding how deep their involvement in and sanctioning of the stories the comics tell actually is (if there is any to begin with). Do the comics genuinely tie in with the game at all and respect its canonical lore and world, or are they actually mostly unrelated pirate stories merely branded as official Sea of Thieves content as a cash grab?

    2. The Art of Sea of Thieves book clearly would be canonical if it discusses any information pertinent to the game’s lore at all, since it comes directly from Rare themselves, but does any such information exist in the book, or is it all only real-world behind-the-scenes and developmental information?

    3. Finally, for when I do get my hands on these materials, I would like to know any chronological information I should be aware of when reading. From what I understand, Tales is written like an old journal found in the present-day Sea of Thieves world, so that could best be read last, I guess, since, in-universe, it exists in the present-day perspective for me to read as if I picked it up somewhere in the game, right? But Fortune is written like an actual novel and takes place long before the game, right? So I should probably read that first? And what about the comics; they are also written as a traditional narrative it seems, so are the events of their story set before, after, or during Fortune or the game?

    Thanks!

  • k... none of the books really tie into eachother, as theyre all from different perspectives. reading one first wont confuse you about the other. IF i were going for chronological order (not that it matters), Fortune, Tales, Comics.

Athena's Fortune is what the games Tall Tales are based off of, as in the book, you find characters such as The Pirate Lord, Briggsy, Graymarrow, and The Gold Hoarder. It takes place before The Pirate lord was dead, and before the 3 were skeleton lords, eventually leading into why they became skeleton lords.

Tales is an old journal found by pirates, who constantly annotate the entries, which are in Captain Flameheart's perspective; his upbringing, his experiences, and thoughts. Halfway into the book, the pirates use it as their own journal and go on their own adventure, logging it in the same book.

Comics are really good, they're from DeMarco and Lesedi's perspectives, and shows how and why they rival eachother so much, trying to make their father proud by being the first to find the treasure that he hid for his 2 children.

The art book is just concept art. A LOT of it. Still worth buying though, as it has some pretty interesting stuff in it.

  • @klutchxking518 Okay, cool! This is helpful, thank you very much! So the art book is not related to the canon but is still a cool read, the comics do in fact tie into the game, and the chronological order is Fortune, Tales, and then the comics. Awesome. But are the comics set before the game still, like Fortune and Tales are, or are they set DURING the game?

  • @n1njagamer13 Well, the Pirate Lord is DeMarco and Lesedi's father, and he left his family for the Sea of Thieves, to be the first person to sail there, presumably when his 2 children were very young. It's assumed that DeMarco and Lesedi grew up pirating outside the SoT, and eventually went to the SoT after his death to continue his legacy, therefore making it not DURING the game, but quite possibly just BEFORE the game.

  • @N1njaGamer13

I’d recommend that order as well. The Pirate Lord died before the Ferry of the Damned became a thing on the Sea of Thieves. Marco, Lesedi, and the characters in Tales all came after. Time works funky in the region, so, after Fortune, it’s difficult to say for sure what is before or during the game.

  • Thanks everyone! I better get reading!

    aye

  • My absolute Dream would be an real „Lore Book“ with colored pages in the style of the Art Book, but unlikely the Art Book this book contains real Lore, explanation of things like the different Megs, the different Skelly Types, Characters like Duke or the Pirate Lord, explanations about the different Seas and Islands etc. But the most important thing, in this book Rare can mention, describe new for us unknown things like Skeleton Lords, Monsters, the merfolk and sea queen, the great warrior etc and new unknown areas inside the Sea of Thieves surrounded by the Shroud and teases us massive hints of Future Content, but without saying when it’s coming! Wouldn’t that be an amazing best-seller?
