I'm thinking about the pets having unique abilities. That recharge when fed. So Say you give a cat fish, and it's special ability is to hunt chicken, pigs, and snakes, killing them for you to pick up the meat. The dog when given chicken, pork, or snake meat can help you dig up chests faster. A parrot when given fruits can fly above you and caw if it sees another ship at a certain distance. The monkey when given fruit can collect fruits it finds on an island and bring them to you. I'm open to more ideas about abilities, leave some replies.
Pet Special Abilities
@iisrgntwolfii you bring up a good point but these abilities are passive. None of them aid you in combat in any way that you yourself couldn't do already. You can get your own meat, you can spot your own ship, you can dig up your own chest, and you can find your own fruit. they just aid you in doing these things.
@the-350-joker Having a pet kill animals or dig up chests for you is an advantage, passive or not.
If you and I are solo, but only you have a pet that allow you to dig up chests faster, you have a clear advantage.passive abilities are still abilities giving an advantage over another player beyond that player's skill alone.

What if you're on the island, and I'm tailing you. The extra dig from your dog may be just enough time to get you back to your boat before I can catch you. Advantage.Monkey - You and I are fighting and your monkey brings you that much needed pineapple. Advantage.
You are talking about game-play advantages, however subtle they may seem to you, that are still advantages.
@goedecke-michel I guess i'm thinking in an EA sort of way. My thought that Rare is using pets among other things coming to the shop to help fund future updates. And pets are neat and all but over all useless. Given that each pet does something different it would possibly get players to buy more than one pet.
@iisrgntwolfii these abilities will only happen when the animal is fed. (incase of the monkey feeding a banana will send it out to perhaps come back with a higher tier level of fruit.) Are you going to pause in the middle of a fight to feed your monkey? I might give it a spank but not feed it. as for digging up chests faster we're not talking a minute of difference. Digging up a chest is pretty quick as it is. Shaving off a few seconds isn't going to change a whole lot.
@the-350-joker i can do anything in the game, i can spot a ship, get meat, fish etc.
I know this is taking it to the extreme but this works in the same way as “i can get to pirate legend on my own, but now that i have a pet i can just feed him a shadow stormfish and be one immediattely”
Whilst getting food for you by killing a pig is one thing and i would say might be passable (which is REALLY borderline) anything else is giving too much of an advantage especially spotting ships for you
If pets can be purchased and this gives the player an additional tool that another player may not have, this creates an advantage.
While it could be cool, be fun, immersive and create a new way for players to prepare and plan for certain activities, it goes against the only core component that Rare has held as sacred.....even though there are imbalances throughout the game...this would add another and behind a paywall to make it even worse.

Yes, everyone loves eas strategy for mtxs. If you think pets are useless, then don't buy them. This game will always be all cosmetic for mtxs and advancement.
@iisrgntwolfii it would be cool to have a pet that freaks out if there’s a storm or if a stranger is near by. I can’t tell you how many times my dog In real life has barked at people walking by. If they added abilities to pets they would have to at least make a default version obtainable in game. Most people wouldn’t want the default and purchase with real money different skins and versions of pets.
@the-350-joker there is a competition there is a race. If someone is hunting you down trying to steal your treasure it could come down to seconds. There would be a strategic advantage for having pets with abilities. I am all for abilities specifically maybe a dog barking at a stranger somone close or animals freaking out when storms are nearby. But they would have to have a default version that all players can get or else it would be paying for an advantage.
