At the edges of the map instead of tre sea turning red it should be a waterfall off of the edge which will result in sinking your ship. Or if there were certain locations that would allow you to travel elsewhere maybe for a new story mode quest or event. (Like in pirates of the Caribbean as they attempt to get into Davy Jones’ Locker.

There is lore about the Devils Shroud aka the Red Sea already and Ramsey Singh the Piratelord was the first who found the Sea of Thieves by crossing it.
It startet at the Ancient Isles and lifted up further.
The Introduction of the Devils Roar and the Story around Cpt. Grace Morrow, Stitcher Jim, Salty and some more are connected to this and the Shroud lifted further and the Devils Roar appeared.
It's no wonder you start at Morrows Peak with the Shroudbreaker to get to Tribute Peak the Island in the Devils Shroud in the Tall Tale.We cannot, need not and mustn't change this!

I'm no expert about the lore, but iirc the Sea of Thieves is surrounded by the Devils Shroud.
Lorewise i understand the SoT is something like the Bermuda Triangle.
And we are captured here unable to die unable to pass the Shroud etc....
Although we now have a Shroudbreaker we only reached Tribute Peak until ;-)I'm personally not a fan of an ice or whatever Region i want to keep it in the carribean pirate flair, but this is a completely different thing :-)
