Tavern Games and Assosiated Reputation Progression

  • A few Tavern/Outpost cross-crew, mini-game suggestions

    1. Bare knuckle, drunken boxing
    2. Spitting accuracy contest
    3. Who can get furthest walking down a jetty drunk
    4. Fingers splayed on table and dagger game.
    5. Cards (cheating is allowed)
    6. Outpost parkour race. For example; who can get to the top of "Galleons Grave" in the fastest time?

Perhaps a new game mechanic for the 1st of each, in-game month to bring people to the taverns for a social night of piratey, related fun?
(ships could still be sunk and pirates killed but if 2 galleons and a sloop are parked at an outpost perhaps a fearsome pirate may think twice).

I think some streamers actually did something like this a while back but it would be cool if there was an official game controlled contest.

  • @guybrush3pwood2 For now I'll settle for cards and dice but it would be awesome to have these at the taverns. It's been so long since I used the tavern as a social place with another crew :(

  • @xcalypt0x That's what I was thinking. I hardly ever visit the taverns except to reload on supplies. Would make good use of the tavern, multiple outpost docking areas and could promote alliances. Could promote other gamer instigated games like a friendly sword fight to practice your PvP skills.
Could also bring crews together so they complete the co-crew quests afterwards to, like the large skeleton thrones.

  • @guybrush3pwood2 Funny that you mention multiple docking areas. I feel like the Sea Dog's tavern should have enough docks for each ship in the server to encourage it being a social area.

why not but I would say nice

  • I actually love this idea, but only if it doesn't impede the otherwise free-form nature of SoT. In other words, no 'safety' or non-PvP areas, no game-enforced betting (all bets are made and honored/dishonored organically, as in exchanging treasure), or matchmaking systems. I would love to be able to hang out at an outpost and play cards with crew members/members of other crews.

I also agree with @xCALYPT0x that the games should be limited to the more straight forward, structured games like cards, dice, or five finger fillet. SoT already allows players to run games such as sparring, racing, etc if they want

  • Lol I like this idea. Itd be cool to have the cheating as an option and maybe a way to catch someone cheating and also have a penalty for being caught cheating or a penalty for falsely accusing a pirate of cheating by like reducing your health a little or have it result in a fist fight between the 2 players.

  • @xix-zeno-xix I agree that cheating should totally be a thing, but it should also be completely organic cheating. Likewise, the whole game should be organic. For example, if playing poker, or some variation of such, you literally have a 'hand of cards' as a radial item that you can hold, much like a treasure map. You can hold them normally to have them out and facing you, LMB to hold them up to your face to 'select' a certain card (for draw poker or other games that need it), or RMB to flip them around and show everyone else (exactly like how you currently do with a map). You can also 'stow' them so no one (including you) can see them. This way the game is less of a 'minigame' and more simply a series of actions that can be done within the game to yield specific outcomes that players can react to. Players would need to pick cards up from and place cards back into the deck (there would be a short animation for drawing from the deck and placing back into the deck). Players could then count the animations to ensure that players drew or returned the appropriate number of cards.

Cheating then happens by either having a teammate sneak around (or doing it yourself) to see someone's cards while they have them out, picking up a random card from the deck when no one is looking and/or putting a card back into the deck when no one is looking (the animation would need to be silent), simply not putting cards back into the deck in preparation the next game and hoping no one notices, or other such manually-executed actions. I'm sure the mechanics could be tweaked to allow/disallow different kinds of cheating. The point is that the more organically these games can be designed, the better fit for SoT they'll be

  • Oh yeah, I don't think a safe place would be needed. It's got to be authentic to the pirate life so if an almighty fight breaks out because someone is caught cheating, then so be it. The draw to compete in the games would be the associated reputation progression. That would be the reason players would want to take part. I think there has to be a progression aspect otherwise players would just grief others during events. They would still be welcome to do so, but if half a server wants to take part, one crew may end up getting repetitively sunk themselves for taking on an outpost full of pirates.

  • @xcalypt0x I do like the idea of turning that central Sea Dog's Tavern into a social place and have been thinking that since it was completed. I don't want there to be unique rules there - like no weapons/safe zone - but a reason for crews to gather there and be social.

  • This would need to be a new faction, like hunters call. It would promote more cooperation for sure.

  • @guybrush3pwood2 I agree with everything you suggested. It'd be nice to play a game of blackjack or War with a deck of cards while sailing. Maybe darts. Waiting on the long journey from one end of the map to the other with the winds against you is a super time vampire. Aside from fishing, we could use some other distractions while staying on course. Not distractions like battles and fights. I've had plenty of super long sailing trips with nothing in between but the sounds of water, rain, and birds. An in-game deck of cards playing solitaire could solve a lot of loneliness.

  • Perhaps add a rudimentary version of the board game Battleship :D

I would like to order a number 1, and a number 5, please. Thank you.

Oh I agree, no safe zones. Just an area that is clearly defined as the go to place to be social. Right now people can be hunkered down at any tavern. If there is a place that clearly looks like it is intended to be a gathering area I feel like it would help people out more.

  • I'd love to see bare knuckle drunken boxing.... So far there is no reason to drink grog... It's just a funny thing to do. As a legend I've not drunk for months and months. It should have funny pasttime

  • @sweltering-nick I'm just a guy with ideas....I guess, you'll have to help snowball this suggestion to even make it to a discussion level within Rare.

  • @ambiguousmonk fair enough.

  • great ideas, I think they should add a target which you can throw knives at.
