Brightness / Gamma setting.

  • Could we please get those options? This game gets really dark on my TV at night, if I walk into a cave I am unable to see anything past my pistol while fighting skeletons that now spawn like non-stop.

To be honest I would rather be able to access the ingame VFX options to toggle my own color settings. I bet with some changes I could make it look better than it currently is. U.E. has a lot of VFX settings to play with, without hurting the game or it's code.

  • Being able to set brightness would be excellent. I'm on xbo and I rarely have to change game default, but with SoT the nights are too dark, I can't see anything without a lantern. Being able to nudge the brightness just a tiny bit would be great.

(local dimming etc. isn't enabled, regardless, brightness is nice to have in any game)

  • Yes. Please give us brightness options. I usually have to make all games a tad brighter than other people do. Thank you Rare!

  • An HDR brightness setting slider would go a long way too. Sometimes it's just way too dark and well the backlight on the tv is already maxed out lol

  • I don’t imagine this will go down well but when its nighttime at home and all the lights are off, do you go inside the settings of your eyeballs and tweak the gamma? Surely darkness should be dark? The only time i have had an issue with the darkness is if its particularly bright (irl) due to my home decoration, white walls and a sun facing window does that. Please Rare don’t change the lighting or player settings it will devolve into night vision pirates, i love that moment when you walk into a cave and it is complete darkness, or being under deck with all lanterns off.

  • @hod-make-u-rage So you post here rather than taking advantage of the settings on your tv? You know what I do when it's dark...use my lantern. :-)

  • @sniffyn0se The HDR mastering is perfect in this game. Only lazy developers offer HDR options because they messed up their hdr implementation.

It is balanced to perfection here.

But the overall darkness can be pretty dark when the real world sun is messing around. I’m using dark and heavy curtains, that works.

  • I would love to see a HDR slider or something to that effect in the game. Have stated before that when night falls in game, it's really hard to make things out, even when using your lantern to light the way. I don't know what it is like for others but, it seems that the luminosity of torches and lanterns are dialled down when using HDR.
All other games I own with HDR capability have a slider adjustment option and with a little bit of tweaking and a calibrated TV, these games look great. Would be nice to see SOT with these options.

  • @solidsnakemig said in Brightness / Gamma setting.:

I don’t imagine this will go down well but when its nighttime at home and all the lights are off, do you go inside the settings of your eyeballs and tweak the gamma?

No, but my pupils do automatically dilate to take in as much of the available light as possible, I'd expect not to be able to see anything in TOTAL darkness but if I still couldn't see anything in a moonlit twilight then I'd be booking an appointment with my optician.

    Surely darkness should be dark?

There is a difference between something being dark and something being totally indistinguishably black.

The problem, and one that a lot of the people saying that the brightness at night is fine as it is seem to be utterly oblivious to, is that not everyone has the same quality TV/monitor, some people might be playing on a screen that isn't capable of displaying the differences between very dark shades as well as others, that's why gamma correction sliders in videogames exist in the first place.

Sure I get that there are people who will exploit gamma correction to be able to easily see in the dark, but for some people not having the option of gamma correction may mean not being able to see in the dark AT ALL, even in circumstances where someone with a more expensive monitor might be able to see just fine even without a lantern.

  • @ch4o5bl4d3 this wasn’t really something i had thought of, but i have to say there has to be a line drawn, there has to be a minimum where we say if you are below it you just will not experience the game the same as everyone, technology moves forward, its in Rare’s best interests to keep up with it. I play on an og xb with a non 4k tv, people on the 1x and high end PCs or with shiny 4k displays experience the game differently than i do, i understand and accept this. We can’t expect developers to downgrade their products.

  • @solidsnakemig How is having a feature like gamma correction ever a downgrade??

Even people with similar monitors won't necessarily have them calibrated the same, and the average player shouldn't be forced to mess with their monitor settings to make the game look good when it would be far easier to have those options in the game just like the vast majority of other so-called Triple-A games do.

The specific brightness/contrast/gamma/color settings needed to make the default game settings look good on a particular monitor might make that same monitor look horrible for general use like web browsing, so having to go into your monitors menus to mess with those settings every time you launch the game and then back into those menus to reverse those changes every time you finish is a stupid thing to expect people to do, especially when the game could instead apply those settings only to itself far easier, leaving your monitors settings calibrated for general use as they should be.

Put simply, not having a fundamental function like gamma correction is a downgrade to begin with on an established industry practise that it just basic decency to have.

  • +1

Even on PC nights are too dark yeah.

  • @ch4o5bl4d3 you are mistaking good developers with bad here, lighting settings in games are usually because the job hasn’t been done right in the first place, allowing us to ‘fix’ any discrepancies.

  • @solidsnakemig No, lighting settings in games are there to account for the discrepancies that the developers have no control to over to begin with, just like the aforementioned limitations of individual user hardware...

You might not think it's worth their time, but supporting people on lower end computers as best as possible was one of the things they specifically said they wanted to strive for with their "No asterisk crossplay" pledge, which is why not having gamma correction to let people choose the setting that looks best for their own particular setup and environment makes no sense.

  • @ch4o5bl4d3 i didn’t say its not worth their time i said it wasn’t in their best interests, there have already been a few substantial downgrades to this game to cater for the crossplay with lower end PCs, and people have noticed it. As i said earlier there has to be a line.

  • @solidsnakemig I have an og xbox and a non 4k tv...so you're saying I need to buy a new xbox and a 4k tv to have the game be playable at night? Because right now, even with lanterns, I can see literally nothing at night, while my crewmates can. There has to be a fix that doesn't include spending $900ish for a xbox one x and a 4k tv :(

  • @shuhya why would you need to? I’m saying you don’t need to upgrade, but we are in 2018 now, just because people want to play this on their fridges doesn’t mean we all should have to suffer. Please understand my point before adding unnecesarily.

  • I need my brightness and gamma changed for every game. I'm not going to change my PC setting just for 1 game, because the developer is lazy as hell. Even pong and Pac-Man have these settings.

Please show me a Rare game that does not have this setting, besides this one?

If I was forced to play Alien Isolation at the same darkness this game forces me to, I would instantly refund.

I gave this game too many chances and it's too late to refund. Now I just have to suffer through this half baked, early access, featureless, empty, unpolished, buggy, broken, repetitive, mind numbing and boring game and reach pirate legend because I want to hook up some newbies with voyages before I quit.

  • @cpt-cat-sparr0w On PC, this helps a bit. I leave brightness and contrast at default (and adjust in my graphics card settings instead) but set gamma to 1.3. It'd be far nicer to see this option in the game though.

  • This game desperately needs a HDR calibration setting.

Not all HDR is equal, the HDR10 standard is implemented differently among displays.

I have an LG 2017 B7 OLED TV whose game mode preset has a poorly thought out tone mapping system were it treats all HDR content as 4000 nits meaning it is overly tone mapped which causes the darkness in HDR scenes with losing detail (that is not what HDR is meant to look like).

LG have the wrong setting forced in game mode were it should be mapped to 1000 nits instead. You can see this by activating dynamic contrast to low on the HDR Cinema preset, this forces tone mapping to 1000 nits and Sea of Thieves now looks correct (but HDR cinema is way too laggy for use).

Sadly this feature is not preset in game mode and the dynamic contrast setting that is in HDR game mode preset will not change the tone mapping, just making things a little brighter and not restoring detail lost in far too dark scenes.

So you have to calibrate the game to compensate for the bad HDR tone mapping which the game does not provide either.

Please Rare add this feature or consider adding support for Dolby Vision HDR which will display correctly on a DV display as it's designed that way, HDR10 has too many variances.

    Thanks.

  • Me too, i have BenQ 144Hz XL2411P and sometimes is very very dark and i cant see nothing... pls fix

  • This thread is some of the most elitist and cringy responses I have ever seen on a claymation game. Thinking that a game has perfect setting and if you need to change it you suck is the saddest thing I have ever seen.
