I know there is ALOT of talk about this,, and out of convenience this would definitely be ideal...but if private queues get implemented I think random queues would become pointless. If everyone is queueing private...there would be no room for solo players or new people to join using random queue making it nearly impossible to join in a fair amount of time. Thoughts?
Could private Queues be a BAD thing?
@casesugar401098 Agreed, and private queues would defiantly solve the problem...but I think it could also cause other problems. I'm not against the idea...I just worry this might happen. Random queues are a great way to meet new people and have awesome new adventures, and it would be sad if it went away.
@andrew175151
Its unnecessary there are already options for 1,2,3 and 4 players. Why would anyone want to run a 2 or 1 man galleon anyway? If another Galleon with 4 people comes after you its pretty much RIP you...
@casesugar401098 You don't have to deal with it currently?
Don't want randoms then just pick the crew size you currently have...I think it could be bad, but it also could be good (everything is kind of a mixed bag, right?).
I hate seeing that "randoms are bad!", because meeting new, cool players as newly acquired crew can be an awesome experience.
I've done nothing but random crews during the scale test, and I've had excellent times. I've taught a number of new players (most caught on very quickly and were quite successful at sailing, ship battles, and acquiring booty).
They're not all bad... hell, I'm a random as well. A good pirate, with experience, pretty darn good with the sword, and a high reputation with the Gold Horders. And I got teamed with plenty others that were similar.
Yeah, each time I started my sessions, I had to log in and out a few times, before finding a crew that wanted me. However, it never took too long (4 tries, at most).
Anyway, how it could be good or bad:
It could be good, obviously, because randoms won't get matched with a crew that doesn't want them.
It could be bad, because most might choose to prevent randoms, and potential spots could be very, very few...
However, I think the bad is less likely, because all of the randoms looking for a crew, will be matched up together... and... voila... happy match-making without having to deal with re-logging.
Nothing is perfect, but it should lean towards the better side, rather than worse outcome.

Very true
The problem is the galleon and when you have 4 random folks joining in and out of games, it makes for a sloopy session lol. On the other hand the sloop is a beauty of a boat. If you get sunk by a galleon while on the sloop well you were parked and well s**t happens or the captain did not handle the situation properly and well thats part of the game. While playing on the sloop the only thing i fear is another sloop. With the wind behind you the galleon will sail faster but its the agility and that size of the sloop that will help you evade or take down a galleon. Look for rocks and make your way around them and zig zag and watch the galleon get stuck in the rocks and sink. And always have a keg of gun powder, o the good times with the gun powder kegs. Id rather sink a galleon the sail on. Happy sailing.
@andrew175151 As far as I see it. If the current system stays in place, that is the option to have a fixed crew size of 1,2,3 or 4, adding a private crew option can only IMPROVE the game, there is no downside only upside. And here is the reason:
If I have if want to play on a sloop and I want a random person with me i queue for 2 man sloop. If not I queue for solo. The same goes with Galleon, if there is 3 of us and we don't want matchmaking, just choose 3 man Galleon.
The ability to have "private crews" is already in effect. But there is one thing missing that with the addition of actual private crews will greatly improve the game, for me at least. Many times during the multiple betas I have played in, I have logged on to play solo and at some point a friend logs on and wants to group up. Currently I am forced to lose all progress I have made on my current ship, including resources gathered, chests on board, message in a bottle maps, and current voyage maps. OR my friend has to wait sometime up to an hour for me to finish (still losing acquired resources). Instead of having options for every crew size, it should just be you choose Sloop or Galleon and then choose private or match making. If you choose match making it will fill the ship with players (2 or 4). If you choose private it will allow you to hold spots on your ship for invite only. If you don't want randoms on your ship, I don't see why the game should force you to have them.
@andrew175151 as stated by another having to leave the session to pick up a friend isn't fun. You lose the quest your on and all chest you don't turn in. If you know your buddy is gonna hop on in 15 minutes waiting can be a drag but playing can feel pointless because you know you can't do much meningfull pirating in that time. But I guess we can just keep having random thrown in the brige for seemingly no reason if that's what you prefer.
Biggest problem for how the game treats the "Cap" of the number of ships in a session, is how boring it will be to see so many "Locked" Galleons with a single player on them..
That would be a bit of a drawback in the experience of the session, as this is "Meant" for 3-4 people, and this could cause a situation where there is a less than optimal experience, if we have say... 4 galleons mucking about with a single player on each of them for the lulz
The game definitely needs privates. Sometimes I just want to sail with my friends and not a random person... and we'll have someone drop out because they have to go to bed and they're replaced by a random person who has no clue what's happening. Or my friends and I will want to have a private conversation while playing so we'll be in group chat and the person who joins can't communicate with us and it just becomes a mess.
One time a random guy I didn't even realize had joined our team put a gun powder barrel next to me and blew me up just for the heck of it. We put him in the brig and he spammed me with a dozen xbox messages calling me an N word and an F word and my mom a W word.

Your point makes perfect sense until one of your crew loses his connection and a random gets on your ship. You can politely ask his to leave and explain why, but then they refuse, and started using up all your cannonballs. You brig him, he yells the N word for hours on end.
Hope you didn't have any chests on the ship because you're just going to have to leave and let the troll have them.

Random matching wouldn't go away, should always be an option. Just shouldn't be the only option. Would be pointless to remove randoms entirely.

This exactly. Most times I start solo and then a friend will join. Sometimes there's three of us for a while before a 4th gets on.
The biggest problem with randoms is when you do find a good group. Chances are high that someone's gonna leave soon. Then you're back to the lottery hoping a troll doesn't join. That said, I've had fun with random crews and I'm usually not one to play small team games with randoms.
@andrew175151 If solo players keep getting sent to the brig, they should stop trying to find a group. When I am unable to play with anybody, I just solo sloop.
@rildan said in Could private Queues be a BAD thing?:
This implementation is completely unnecessary i don't get it at all.
If you are alone and want to play privately just sail the sloop solo. If you are two people join the 2-man sloop. If you are 3 then the 3-man galleon, etc... You don't ever have to play with randoms if you don't want toWhen one of your crew disconnects, you can't get him back, a random joins and refuses to leave.

Servers are by number of players not ships
@casesugar401098 Source? I would appreciate a source regarding. This would be a great asset to future contrasts in confirmed information.

Two is the case where three friends are playing together on the large ship, and don’t want a fourth crew member, but with the way matchmaking currently works you’ll always get that fourth slot filled by a stranger. We see these three players using the brig to place the new player in it. This is currently the only option for three friends playing together, so we have done some work to allow three players to crew the large ship together for launch.
Beyond launch, we’re also looking at giving players more freedom as to how they choose to play at the start. So if you want to take a large ship out but wait for your friends to come online, and then invite them, we’ll make sure you can.*Also, for the subject of the conversation here... This is a quote that will answer a lot of questions. Refer to this thread regarding any questions about personal, and reserved slots on a ship. This is where you will find the answers.
To further digress into the subject of public queues, it is still applicable, because not all people will be in private queues.
This is how people will meet eachother that aren't using their friends lists, and LFG features to build crews.
It doesn't become without a point, because it is still accessible to anyone not using these features.
It then becomes a stand with the prospect of the game being "Accessible to everyone"@zeo said in Could private Queues be a BAD thing?:

This excellent news. Thanks for sharing
I think in time, Rare can implement a lot of things to keep the community appeased.
With nothing but cosmetics at risk, there's no reason private queues couldn't exists as progression is, IMO, non existent.
If a group of 20 (random server size) players all want to play on the same server, why not?
My friends are not so hyped about this game and don’t really enjoy spending much time on beta because the game is not complete and everything will be reset at release and so i’ve Been playing most of my time as a random when I wasn’t in the mood to play on a solo sloop. ( I enjoy it but way less fun)
It’s true that i needed more than 3 matchmaking to find a good crew to sail with, not because i’ve been put in the brig but because of no communication at all ( no mic nor text chat ). However I always been able to find a good one after a few minutes and every time it been a blast playing for a long journey. I never add so much « new friend » in an online game before SoT. Meeting new people is for me really great, I like traveling and I always enjoy meeting new people from all over the world even for a few minutes or hours. I find a little sad to close yourself about playing with strangers because you can learn a lot from the others while sailing the sea without going on personal subject.
I think the problem to find some good players is because it’s a beta and not everyone who test the game for free are invested into the game and don’t really play it as it should be.
The only way to have a useful private queue for me is when someone from your crew get disconected and it can be difficult to invite him again if someone come in this laps time and don’t want to give back the place.
I think the best way to implement it is in the crew menu in game with an option to open the matchmaking by vote when someone leave or get disconnected.
personaly i join randoms, ask if anyone got a mic, and if not or there voice quality is s**t , ill wish them a happy day and try find a new crew.
Sidenote, why is there so many "randoms" that either don't really care about a mic, or they have like a mic they found in a ditch that no one with selfrespect wanted and they think thats enough to send there voice over the internet and it sounds like garbage, and also they don't check so there voice is clear and can be heard well, but it sounds like they got a sock in infront of the mic and they speaking from a toilet 10 meters away from the mic. Anyone else feel like they stumble upon this problem often?
I mean comon your MIC is important, spend some cash on a good one it's a good investment if you wana play multiplayer.
