The Powerful Element Most Games Don’t Have — And Sea of Thieves Could Fully Exploit

  • My idea (starting with the most important part)
First of all, I want to make something very clear:
I don’t want Sea of Thieves to stop being what it is.

I want the essence to stay exactly the same:

    A social sandbox

    A shared pirate world

A game that feels like an emergent adventure

That identity is what makes Sea of Thieves special, and I don’t want that to change.

What I’m proposing is building on top of that essence, not replacing it.

Why I started thinking about this
I felt like playing the game again, but my friends didn’t feel like it.
So I started watching YouTube videos, and I noticed something that seems like an undeniable truth.

A lot of new players say the same thing during their first match:

“Wow, this looks great, I like it, incredible.”

    Then:

“Ok, I do this and this… but what’s the actual objective of the game?”
“Can I use the money to create things, or is it just looting for the sake of looting?”
“Are there abilities to buy, or how does this work?”

    And the chat usually answers:

“Just loot and get better cosmetics.”

    So people say:
“Alright, let’s enjoy the game for a bit, it looks cool.”

They play once, maybe twice, maybe three times… and then they don’t come back.

    Why this matters
You already have amazing things — that’s why I wanted to return.
    The art style is GOLD.
It’s so good that it’s basically timeless.

    And that’s something powerful.

It means you could expand the game in new directions without losing its identity.

What I imagine for the future
Not replacing Sea of Thieves — but evolving it.

    For example:

A large continent with huge cities

A different kind of pirate life

    Light combat mechanics and abilities

    Classes (attack, defense, support)

Small, fun abilities that don’t break balance

    A small dash

    Throwing explosive barrels

Dropping banana peels that only affect enemies

Silly, thematic things that add variety and fun without destroying the core gameplay.

In cities, there could be laws preventing players from attacking others.
If they do, PvE navy guards could arrest them and take some gold after jail time.

This would turn the world into something richer and more alive.

Basically, Sea of Thieves 2, but built on top of what already works.

And I wouldn’t mind paying for it as a DLC if it’s a big expansion.

    Encouraging role‑play
One more thing: I think the game could encourage more role‑play.

For example, adding a mechanic where characters can roll dice on the ground — even at sea, where the dice could float.
The result could appear on screen, in chat, or in some creative way.

This would let players run D&D‑style sessions using the game as a visual base.

It fits perfectly with the social sandbox identity.

    Conclusion
I don’t want Sea of Thieves to change its essence.
I want it to grow into something even more alive, more social, and more full of possibilities — without losing what makes it special.

  • Yo nice idea! One problem

Sea of Thieves is being developed by Rare

  • @karminiumsot Have faith, my friend.Don’t be so negative.

  • @lightning-yata that's all he does

  • @valor-omega yo are you not aware of what is going on RIGHT NOW? Anti-Rare is the majority belief now, just go on twitter

  • @karminiumsot Well aware. Heck, I'm one of the people giving harsh criticisms, lately.

You just post in bad faith.

  • @valor-omega SOT Tinder is NOT bad faith!

My posts are rather tame... too tame even

  • None of these ideas are going to happen in this game. Creating continents and cities doesn't make sense when you can't support city-level volume of players and ships on a server; they would be empty. Classes would require restructuring the entire game to integrate them properly.

This is more sequel material, and we are probably a long ways off from seeing that.
