Pristine Megalodon Teeth and scale drop rate (possible bug?)

  • I decided to wait with posting regarding the extremely low drop rate from pristine meg teeth and scales to be absolutely sure that it was just not me being unlucky. However I started tracking how many megs I killed and how many teeth and scales were dropped. So here is the data starting from 2025-06-17. Emergent megalodons killed 27. pristine teeth dropped 0. pristine scales dropped 2.

The drop rate seems impassibly low for these items and so I'm starting to suspect its a bug. I should say that most of these megs were encountered on a gally in case that makes a difference for the loot tables.
Ona different note. I also feel like the loot for megs dont make much sense. I would expect way more hunters call loot form megs in general.

  • Oh my god, finally someone made a post about it. I thought I was the only one, I have killed easily dozens of emergent megs since the Hunters Call update and have two pristine teeth and 4 scales to my name. It feels like these items are the rarest pieces of loot in the game. They are the only thing stopping me from 100% Hunters Call and it's driving me nuts. Glad to see I'm not the only one, and yes I am on gally most of the time too and one of the pristine teeth I got was from sinking a sloop instead of coming from a meg that spawned on me.

  • @d3verdier

The pristine Meg Teeth and Scales can also be gotten from the wallows of Emergent Wild Boars and IIRC the Kraken.

  • High value items worth something. Yeah it gonna take time to collect or find

Question: why you in such a rush to finish every achievement required? Do you want everything finished by a certain time?

  • @burnbacon I'm all for hard to obtain commendations, trust me. However, 0 drops from 27 megs when you need 20 seems broken, not hard. And yes I'm a completionist, all I want is for it to be possible and fair.

  • I agree. I can't remember even seeing Pristine Scales except maybe as an Ancient Meg drop. The commendation grind does seem like it'll be exceptionally long.

  • @lem0n-curry Yeah, I'm aware they have a chance to spawn there too. just feels odd that the best way to get shark teeth is by finding boar :D

  • Real. I've been having the exact same issue with the pristine tooth drops, killed a bunch of emergent megs, and have only gotten one tooth...

Don't know if it's the best way, I hardly come across them.

I am more curious how they get those chests into their wallows 😁.

  • I think I have got more of them from boar wallows that actual megs.

Im not overly concered about how long the com takes to complete. Its the hanging around a server for ages waiting for an emergent meg then getting nothing that annoys me. I'd have rather the number stayed at 50 and every emergent meg dropped 1-2 of each type. Maybe even the voyage meg should have a random chance of dropping 1-2 of each type.

It's a similar issue I have with the merchant resource quests. I'm very happy to spend time collecting whatever loot is needed, but the punishing RNG makes it much less fun. That's not to say that that all forms of RNG are bad. The mega stashes are a great example of RNG done right (perhaps the reward was a little too much, but whatever).

  • @fry9889 Agree! It's also for the sake of making it clearer to the player how to acquire an item. To get meg teeth I should kill megs makes sense. Guaranteeing one pristine tooth/scale would go a long way in that respect.
I dont mind the number of items being high. I just want my way of getting there to be clear.

  • I saw a post here where someone said they spent something like 95 hours trying to get all the tooth and tusk comms because the drop rates are so bad. It's probably meant to be like that, unfortunately.

  • I completed the commendations a few months ago for these. The best advice I can give, is to dive to the Wild Rose tall tale, and hit Lone Cove, Cannon Cove, Crescent, Wanderers, Snake, Crooks, and dive to Wild Rose again. I avoided the large islands like Smugglers and Old Faithful for obvious reasons, as the small/medium islands are best. If you have a friend doing the same thing on another server, it goes even quicker.

It gets worse as you progress, as it took me roughly 16hrs to get my last tooth as I was solo, and only looking for wallows that had it. Many threads were made about the rarity of these, and have never been addressed so I knew it was intentional.

    Good luck.

  • @europa4033 Thanks for the tip! Yeah, it just seems so strange that killing megs renders you just about nothing while looking for boar wallows does...surely cant be intentional? Very strange design if that is the case.
