Tell me you have an unstable connection without telling me you have an unstable connection

  • *testing to see if the image pops up *well the link seems to work.

I am sick to death of trying to get through a Quest or play session without getting interrupted. It starts with that little yellow icon in the top left corner, then suddenly you notice theres a slight lag in input, then you notice you're not moving and suddenly, your ship starts arising out of the water, and not long after, that dreaded harp string plays and a loading screen appears. If I see Almondbeard, Cyanbeard, hazelnutbeard, or any other color-descriptbeard, I am gonna lose it. For weeks we've been dealing with this and blaming our cheap Verizon Wireless Internet service however, I've discovered in another discussion forum this is happening to people using fiber optic Internet. Well how can that be? We've considered switching to Verizon FIOS however it's "not provided in our area." But would that even fix the problem? In another post someone mentioned ever since this latest Season 16 update this has been an ongoing issue. I would LOVE to know what is happening. Is our ISP, or is it SoT that is having the issue? Verizon even provided us with an extender to ensure a better connection, but alas, it is not helping and every night becomes a gamble as to whether we're gonna get through a Tall Tale; Are we gonna lose all the fish we just caught? Can we not get killed by a skeleton because there was a lag in loading our guns? We'd be fine if we were losing battles and treasures for not being well-versed in playing, but its not NPCs that are taking us out, its the killer unstable connection. Thank you for reading. - jj

  • Players using XBOX consoles cannot view their ping.
They are unwilling to provide this feature for the host.
When the game told me that my connection was unstable, I had no way to troubleshoot. A ridiculous feature.

If you're going to play on wireless, at the very least use a good wireless router and not the combo modem/router provided by your ISP. Put that one in bridge mode and hardwire your new router to that. If you're using a modem that's a few years old and has a PUMA 6 chip, that might also be causing issues. I'd check to make sure there isn't other traffic on your network that might be causing a bottleneck also.

If you're already doing that and using wireless for internet (as in, your internet is wireless from your house to your ISP and not on fiber or copper), then I'm not sure there's much you can do if you can eliminate any possibility of it being something within your own network because it'd be out of your hands at that point.

You could also check Azure Latency Test to see what kind of connection you have to the various data centers in your region, which might give a hint to what's going on if the ping there is unstable. For example, when I check I see that all US/Canada ones are labelled as "FAST" (between 60-94ms) but US East 2 is "UNSTABLE" (100+ with a few spikes).

I have Fiber, using hardwired connection to my own router which is bridged to my ISP modem/router (the wireless is disabled here). I'm probably quite far from most Azure data centers that the game is using (west/central Canada) and don't have connection issues like that unless the server dies (Marblebeard). My ping isn't the greatest (70-100) but I don't get flying/diving ship syndrome you'll see if you're actually losing packets in transit. Playing on EU servers does result in noticeable lag when playing and delay when trying to interact with things, but it is still playable.

  • I'm EU. For all EU Azure servers my ping varies between 25 (3 servers closest to me) -70 (server from the farthest part of EU from me). Fast fiber net, wi-fi disabled, only ethernet connection. PC, Steam.

While I never got disconnected, I do have symptoms depending on the day (on the server) of rubberbanding, ship jumping in place or when sailing, etc. Sometimes more often, sometimes not at all.

So bottom line, in 90% of cases it's game servers, as I don't have issues like this in other online games that I play (as none of them are using MS Azure servers).

I'd really love if Rare would allow players to hard pick (lock) the region they're playing in, and/or also to show us which one in the HUD (when we select FPS + Ping stats). Tbh, I'd rather even wait unable to play if my region got crashed (until it gets back up), than to play with inconsistent laggy glitchy experience cuz I got yeeted to a server region that's just bad for me.

It's very possible that at least some of these unstable connection variations we experience are depending on which country's Azure server game decides to toss us at. Especially us that have few surrounding country's Azure servers, and not having one of our own.

I also believe that ping alone doesn't tell the whole story, at all. For all I know, French servers may be better (more stable) than Poland ones that are closer to my country (with lower ping). So I'd love to be able to pick hahaha.

PS. bro's ship decided to take a nap lol, nice picture 😂

We're using a laptop and an Xbox S series. ( Got kicked off the Xbox today solo for context). We've tried everything from me lowering my graphics to cursed, to taking all our phones and external devices off our wifi. We've tried hardlining Ethernet in both devices, tried one hardlined, one not, etc. Appreciate your input. 🙏

  • @d3adst1ck

Thanks so much for the feedback and your suggestions. It truly does feel "out of our hands" which is so frustrating when it comes to problem-solving. There doesn't seem to be a guarantee "fix"when we're reliant on other parties to provide stability. We thought we had an outdated router and so we had Verizon send us a new one but that didn't resolve anything. We're in the Eastern part of the US. Thank you for commenting 🙏

  • @r3vanns

I used to get the rubber banding, what some folks call the "teleporting" glitchiness some time back and then I would plug directly into our wireless modem and it, for the most part, fixed it. I thought we were lagging now because we're using two separate devices on one modem but I was alone today on Xbox and ot kicked me off (gotta do the damned Briggsy story book quest again). I hit that Share button like 10 times to capture that "ship taking a nap" haha. Might start phrasing it that way when I see it start to go skyward. It's like watching an accident about to happen and theres nothing you can do to stop it. Thanks for your input. 🙏

Speaking of input, check out my flying ship lol 😂 just a few moments ago, few episodes of hard glitching and rubberbanding. Poor Spinal going "AAAAAAAAAA FFF-"

PS. Safer Seas session btw. I always wondered if SS servers are worse than HS ones, as in getting less resources/maintenance, or is it just purely related to an Azure server (and location) itself.

  • @r3vanns Super valid point! We do a lot of SS because we're just trying to complete TTs and find bullsh-t journals and don't feel like being intruded on by other players looking to sink ships. One time, we were in HS, had our loot stolen but weren't attacked and we were like, " yo, you literally just stole our quest item" and they didn't attack us but instead showed me a secret door in a tavern...but anyway, THATS why we do quests in SS. Thanks for sharing your napping ship moment hahaha. ✌️

  • I am suffering with this constantly, I don't know if it's on my end or not, sometimes I can play fine all day no problem and sometimes I get kicked 5 times before even entering the game usually says cyanbeard, granitebeard. Stuff like my guilds and supply shops, pirate log etc. take forever to load and I will often crash out talking to the supply shops, sometimes I'll be in hourglass and it will be fine for a few games then I'll dive into a server and my connection is so bad I can't even bail my boat, never have a problem playing other games so it's frustrating, also I never have any of these issues on xbox plays fine I just get this on my pc usong same connection

  • Sometimes I'll be talking to the supply shops but they won't load so I just sail off without the supplies I did this yesterday had extremely unstable connection when I sailed off and went on to do 3 legendary bottle voyages in that session no problem, it bothers me more when it's in hourglass and someone is like "well played" and I'm lagging so much I can't even bucket I'm throwing 10 buckets out and nothing is happening

  • My ship was flying a lot today in particular; at ports, while sailing... Out of nowhere, it just decided gravity wasn't a thing for a few moments and then crashed back down into the water.

As for the 'Unstable Connection' warning: I get that constantly and my internet is pretty good (usually around 900Mbps down, 350Mbps up).

    It ain't me... JS

  • @bumpersum967441

Hey thanks for joining this discussion. My HP laptop loads a lot slower than the Xbox S does. My girlfriend will be on the Xbox while I'm on the laptop and it'll show that I've joined the server on the Xbox end and doesn't load up on my laptop for a good 20 seconds or give or take. Are you playing in High Seas or Safer Seas mainly when this is happening?

  • @jack-flintlock

Yeah, awfully curious, it seems that even stable or decent internet connections are experiencing this problem and, here we were getting all angry with our ISP. Thanks for sharing!

  • UPDATE: We played last night (07-19-25, 8pm EST) in High Seas to test the waters (pun nearly intended) and we had little to no issues connection wise. We got the icon, more so on my laptop than the Xbox but it was (here's another one) smooth sailing for the most part in High Seas. We're gonna play this morning and sea...(ok now it's too much) what happens. Appreciate everyone' input!

  • UPDATE 2: our High Seas session this morning (07-20-25 appx 8am EST)was uninterrupted despite the minor Unstable Connection notifications. Perhaps we will just continue to play in High Seas and hope for the best. As much as I can appreciate the PvP scenario/competitive play aspect of this game, there is a 0% chance that I will disrupt or fire upon another player unless provoked and, even if someone abruptly engages us in combat, we're more likely to just remove ourselves from the situation. Our objective right now is completing all the Tall Tales and then, we'll be more likely to engage in friendly PvP gameplay. May the winds ever be in y'alls backs! Please feel free to post here and share your experiences with Unstable Connections. Cheers! -jj

  • Gotta love gettin a lucky voyage of luck, grabbing everything along with a few other voyages and the good ol Marblebeard pops up.....it's sad cuz out of all the games I play, these servers are the most sketch.

Even Helldivers which has 5-10 times the amount of players online doesn't run into nearly as many issues as this.

Such a b-ummer (since that word is apparently banned lol

  • It's laggy as all hell for me too, but I rarely if ever get disconnected for it.

  • This morning I played in Safer Seas and didn't get kicked but had a couple flying ship moments, I thought to be magically Peter Pan-esque lol. 07/21

  • I also get 3-4 unstable connection popups per session but it's certainly nothing to do with my internet. It usually causes severe lag and rubberbanding for about 10 seconds and then i'm fine again.

  • @imjohnnymonsoon

B-mmer is a strong word here? (about to see for myself* oh my gosh it is!!). Gosh, I wonder what weight that bears in other regions.

Thanks for sharing your experience with Helldivers!

  • @potatosord
Thanks for sharing. where are you located about? you can be regional about it.

  • @hefty-henri

Thanks for sharing! And do you play mainly in SS or HS ?

  • @exceptedcolt660 EU always high seas

  • @exceptedcolt660 Middle canada

  • Well, I'm convinced and ,I want to graciously thank everyone here for their comments in confirming that our Unstable Connection issues don't appear to be at the fault of our Internet Service provider but rather something on the Sea of Thieves server end. We'll be keeping our Verizon Wireless Internet plan after all.

Happy sailing, and also, Please post any pictures of flying/sinking unstable ships for amusement! Would love to see some airborn vessels!

I realize that I'm whispering into the wind here, but I really hope they (Rare) finally do something about this issue.

Spent a good portion of my playtime yesterday in a levitating ship again, and finally cut my run short due to the aggravation; I was on SS trying to do Sea Fort runs.

  • Title: Looking out at Lookout Point

SS, solo play, Ancient Skeleton farming & fishing sesh.

This game just refuses acting normally for me since the moment they introduced those connection indicators 😂

At least in my case - what's funny is, I literally never have encountered my ship getting catapulted to air from the moment I started playing this game (few years ago). I've seen other people having such issues, and read about it, but me personally never.

Sure, I had rubberbanding/connection issues now and then. But ship flying? Never, until they added that in-game connectivity notification. Strange coincidence, though probably only just a coincidence.

Actually, same for me... haha. Very interesting indeed, but yeah... probably a coincidence (I hope).

A LOT more of Rare's attention needs to go into the servers and their stability (or lack thereof), imo.

  • @r3vanns great view! 😁⛵🏝️

  • @exceptedcolt660

In case people don't know, cheaters have the ability to completely crash/ruin servers.

A friend of mine recently beat a cheater in hourglass, when the cheater said "oh yeah? watch this". For the next 40 minutes my friend had a ping of 1000, his ship kept floating into the air, he was endlessly rubberbanding, etc. Hourglass dives would fail every time, until he just had to leave and start a new ship.

So if you're in a region that has lots of cheaters, there's a chance they're just ruining the servers you're on.

  • @worst-tdmer Appreciate this tip! This is interesting because it seems, despite Rare ltd. having an anti-cheat service/protocol (call it what you will) in place, players still have this ability to disrupt the game's intended state of play. Needless to say, cheating in an online game isn't unheard of but, how as a community are we to acknowledge or determine if it's in-fact a server/internet issue or, is someone messing with the program ? I myself once got booted for "cheating" according to the pop-up message, I forget what the actual message was but, I'm not savvy enough to know how to mess with the code, nor would I want to because there's nothing to gain, I think, from doing it. I wonder then if this is only an issue in High Seas, vs Safer Seas since SS has the "floating ship" issue as well. Thanks for your input 🙏
