Unrealistic streamer goals

  • top 10 was a huge stretch. especially when you consider the season has killed the game and now that we know season10 has no content aside from "play the whole game again, but this time as a guild!!!!"

i cant imagine that helping the game out much. people shouldnt have had to beg summit1g to stream sea of thieves to help push us to the top10. but basically thats what had to happen to achieve this goal. beg a streamer who no longer cares about the game to come back so we can unlock a cosmetic. which according to reddit happened about 7 hours ago and no one are rare even noticed since the new drops havent been turned on

  • I dunno why some have made a big deal about it

out of all the nonsense and drama that happens around content creation it's not like that is hurting anyone

I dunno why burnin' it down is so common of a style socially with SoT but just let people have their fun imo. It's not that serious and people got cosmetics out of it.

Nobody got hurt, nobody had to go through a tough time because of it, it's just people trying to have a good time.

  • Wait. People actually begged streamers? Haha

  • Do I need to "watch" more now?

it was more like a partner made an intentionally silly but polite clip to ask a larger channel with a long history with sot to play at some point

everything was chill and friendly until the "game is dead, let the game die, terrible game, blahblah" crew gotta try to make sure people don't just have a chill time during a community weekend.

    Top 10 top 15, top 20

the fact that many people will still chase a carrot on a 5+ year old live service game is a positive thing.

does it lead to substantive in game dedication? not really

is it still overall helpful for the game to have that sort of interest (even if artificial)? absolutely

    "dead game" keeps living

  • @wolfmanbush Like I keep saying people said EVE Online was dead, 20 years ago, the sky didn't fall! SoT will be around for another decade at least.

I dunno how long they will run with it but what I do know is that the qol within the design has overall gone up significantly in the last year even through the issues.

Some of those changes are tough and are gonna be tough on long term players outside of casual gameplay but overall the experience has improved for more people.

Padding the stats with the twitch/social stuff is only an issue when the organic experience is a mess. Then it's covering up the issues but currently in SoT it's an environment with more opportunity for new players so it's not really much of a problem.

Guilds are eh, looks more like the 4th way for the same cliques to establish cliquery but as they move into the new consenting pvp thing and then safer seas the experience should improve for even more people (including some veteran players).

and the obsidian rug is clean! really ties the sloop together

  • I always knew this event was gonna be a struggle, the fact is that people are burnt after a 7 month long season with another coming up that doesn’t have any new content in it. I’m not saying “game is dead” but what reason is there to come play the game if you’re offering nothing new to do? I like the idea of guilds don’t get me wrong, but what new stuff is there to do other than a single piece of loot like the chest of fortune to collect? Nothing.

  • @tesiccl For me there is a lot of content I have not done because I play solo, looking forward to joining a guild and doing some of that content.

I don't pay super close attention to it but it looked like the reg sot streamers were largely pulling in solid numbers. Some of the partners were/are doing much bigger numbers than usual.

People showed up in some pretty big numbers imo (for sot)

  • @foambreaker but if you enjoy solo with ocasionaly team up with folks from discord then there is sadly nothing new for you.

  • @foambreaker I’ve got stuff I need to do too, but that’s all old content. I shouldn’t be made to complete all that cause Rare can’t be bothered to add new content.

  • @wolfmanbush numbers are decent but considering their big weekend and all that, it’s pretty mid numbers. If the game was in a healthier state and we weren’t 7 months into a season, I think they’d have easily smashed the target, but the fact of the matter is they’ve struggled.

It's not old if you have never done it 🙃

This year a lot of content has less activity as people went back into the world to do their thing. SoT is incredibly time consuming and doesn't necessarily fit in with a lot of people's schedules this year.

I think it's more just life changes from year to year and people do different things, this year was tougher on SoT after a few that benefited SoT and content creation.

To me it seems like they did about as good as they could, all things considered.

Burnout really only effects a small part of the population in a game like this, most players still have lots to do. Season 9 really hasn't been as boring as people say, tall tales and events keep casual players busy on top of all the other stuff people still haven't completed. 9 has been super active overall at the organic level.

  • I don't know if it was Sumsum or not, Sea of Thieves is certainly not showing up as a switched category on his VODs or schedule for last night, only shows Counter Strike. But I don't watch him, nor care to, so maybe he switched briefly and it didn't register on the schedule/VOD.

But I can tell you that I was awake at 6am BST and when I checked he wasn't streaming it but the game was within 3K of hitting the Top 10, sitting at 13th/14th, thanks to a few Spanish language streamers. At that time of the day, it doesn't take much for a game to be briefly boosted or the ones above to fall off. Number 10 (overall) was only at around 23K at that time.

Whether it's "unrealistic" or not, I guess it would be if we were only dealing with peak viewerships. At prime time the game was a good 30-40K off.

Also, bear in mind, they said "As Sea of Thieves made it into Twitch’s top 10 most watched games", so they probably discounted Just Chatting, Casinos, Slots, and Sports, which would have put the game in the top 10 when I checked at 6am.

  • No major updates to things like TF2 but people still play it, people need to understand it doesn't matter how much Rare add to this game, the fun comes from what you make of it, not what the game gives you.

  • Yeah I saw it hahahaha people and streamers begged him. Kinda sad

and that compatibility ends for most at some point and that's alright.

My personal opinion is that the game is only part of the burn out in this experience. I think most of it is social.

This social environment has people spending a lot more time talking about it in discords and twitch chats and all the personal community drama than participating in the organic experience.

It's cliquey, it's dramatic, and it's very often full of parroting the same negativity over and over. That's where people are truly burning out imo. It has negative effects on a lot of people, many have been honest about that as time has gone on.

The adventure game has become the backdrop for what is truly burning people out imo.

Everyone outside of that just plays other games when they want. The real negative type of burnout is largely in the social circles.

pretty sure the strat was just wait till the quiet hours and then the vampirates got us over the finish line

  • @faceyourdemon So what we got our reward and Rare got it's numbers for Seattle.

Keep in mind the powers in the boardroom in Seattle use those numbers to judge Rare, whether we think it makes sense or not.

I really want to know where this narrative is developing from?

Humour me because, as far as I can tell, Sumsum did not stream Sea of Thieves last night. The game doesn't appear in his VOD chapters, nor the Schedule. It also doesn't appear on his Twitchtracker page, which last shows him playing the game in July.

So, when exactly did he bump the game last night?

It's too dismissive in general anyway imo

a bunch of content creators tried to put on a show (some on their day off) and a bunch of people tried to support the game by showing up

Even if a big channel did show up it doesn't take away from the people that showed up in significant numbers. Far more than usual.

Sure, people were benefiting from it but overall it's been a solid vibe, the in game stuff has been interesting.

Overall the cosmetics were earned through legit effort imo.

  • @wolfmanbush

I mean, that's kind of what I am getting it. It feels very detracting from the efforts of so many. I find it far more likely, based on what I saw myself, that the game scraped into the Top 10 games during the off peak at some point on its own merits and the efforts of the community. Bearing in mind that it had to have maintained some momentum from the previous day to remain in contention.

People are just gonna have to accept that we are top 10

might even need a trinket for it

I have a mostly black n white sloop so I looove it. I have been waiting for a rug that fits since captaincy was released.

  • I wouldnt say it was that bad, it was a bit high hopes of a goal, but it was reached, and if it wasnt made, all that would be missed is a few cosmetics.

when I unlock rewards for other games I don't even claim them on twitch and I definitely don't show up for drops that I am not gonna claim for games I am not involved in

Personally I think this shows significant interest in the game still, far beyond what many are estimating. People aren't gonna show up in the numbers they pulled in (spread throughout many different size and style sot channels) without real interest in the game imo.

  • Freyline (my personal goto for twitch drops) was saying she had more subs Saturday than she'd had in a while.

Either way, I saw twitch views being the goal as a delay tactic to keep people playing (and watching) since it was a 2 day event. I'd be willing to bet we would have gotten the rug in a later scheme if SoT didn't top 10. When we get to spam Xitter it goes up exponentially faster.

    Corpo shenanigans.

Sure, but this is SoT, that could be two years from now lol or during an orb where a bunch of people miss it on the first run

This is best case scenario imo, community day, many put in the work, legit effort for solid reward and shows that the game is still quite popular overall.

The shrieking on the socials would have been agonizing. It's still going to be after ppl didn't watch an extra hour on Sunday lol.

You know there's going to be shrieking to complete the set now. Obsidian Table, chair, bed, curtains..... more Twitch fodder lol. I sincerely hope the dump ALL of the Obsidian stuff in the emporium soon.(er than later)
