Will I get banned if I unknowingly sail with a cheater?

  • So a few nights ago I was sailing with a brig doing some pvp and after a couple sinks one of the players says he is using the FOV slider cheat. I left when they mentioned that but I'm curious if my account will get banned by association or is it only the reported player that can get banned?

  • I wouldn't worry about it.

It's not difficult to tell pattern of behavior with data, in general it's good policy to keep it at an individual level but even if they were doing some sort of crack down you wouldn't have much to worry about if you aren't involved in any sort of coordinated violation of ToS.

From everything I have seen the wrongful bans have been reversed when people go through the support system and keep it cool while waiting for a response. So even if something happened and you are clean you can just go through support and explain the situation for them to look into.

Rule of the thumb: if unsure about it, don't do it.

  • @metal-ravage yeah that's what i figured

  • That been my concern as well.
Sailing with or playing in an alliance and one or two players are actively using cheats. Just sailing with them and either not knowing or knowing, would that be also get you in trouble?

I hate randomly joining games now, not knowing. Especially those who wanna pvp

  • Unless you are cheating your self, or willingly playing with some one you know to be cheating, odds are you are fine. If you have no clue you are playing with a cheater, or quit when you find some one is cheating, then it would make no sense to punish you.

Plenty of innocent people dont know there is a cheater on their team in many games, you dont ban the whole team for the actions of the one, this isnt the forgotten city after all!

  • @loadsock I assume there’s ways in the inside (whether it’s from from rare or microsoft or both) where they’re able to see if you come across and become unlucky to have joined an open crew with a cheater or if you regularly sail with them. I mean, if you’re not cheating, you’ve got nothing to worry about.

  • Honestly, as a "TDMer", it's hard to avoid cheaters (though I continue to try). I am a legit player, but probably at least 50+% of the TDM community uses FOV and/or skin-changer cheats. Does that stop me from TDMing and enjoying the game? No. That's on them. Honestly, if someone in the TDM cheats and gets banned, it's not my problem. I can't interrogate everyone that gets an invite and demand that they show me their Task Manager or screen-share throughout the TDM, but I can make sure that I don't cheat.

I used to have a friend who used a skin-unlocker for years. Of course, I never knew that he had been using it, so I probably sailed with him for 50+ hours without knowing that he was a cheater. When I found out, I stopped playing with him. He's banned now.

    TL;DR
My general rule of thumb is to not cheat and just play the game. You can NEVER be sure that your crew is fully legit. A lot of people openly cheat due to Rare's banning system being so flawed, and in that case, I say just leave. Report them and move on. As long as you, yourself aren't breaking the TOS by cheating, there's no reason that you should be banned for the decisions of others.

I would really appreciate Rare giving a clear... not copy/pasted... response on the regulations of bans by association, though, because I don't want to give advice that is actually wrong.

  • No but yes, but no.
RARE support are weird and really depends on the individual who is handling your account.
I recently got a yellowbeard ages ago for doing nothing and they REFUSED to explain why.
Didn't use in game voice to say anything to any crew during the month leading up to it, was just playing in HG game mode doing my routine.

I don't trust RARE support, and if you are playing with cheaters that fly & drop kegs then there is a small chance that you will get banned if your name is reported.
Playing with players that use FOV, you are pretty much never going to get banned, because RARE cannot prove a player is using FoV unless someone grabs footage that they shared and reports it to them.

    Just the truth of things.
RARE doesn't, never had and probably never WILL have a decent anti-cheat that detects ESP/FoV Cheats.
So again, unless your playing with cheaters that are literally flipping ships, flying around the map, dropping airstrike kegs, the chances of you getting banned for association is less then 1%.

The way Rare handles reports is what brings it into question.

What if it's a cheater on your captain ship, and the only evidence of who the cheater is comes from spyglassing your ship in the report?

It just adds to the list of flaws in the report system.

I think rare would be at least a bit smarter than that, but i will give it to you that rare has made some questionable choices in the past. I have yet to see those questionable choices go into the report system, but i could have missed any cases.

  • No need to worry, Rare doesn't care, otherwise we already have a better report system in game.

  • I mean, if a crewmember is flying and dropping kegs on other player's ships, I'm kinda surprised you wouldn't realize they were cheating. You'd never know if someone else was using the FoV cheat however, since that's on them.
