New increase to getting 1000

  • Are you kidding me? Over 1500 wins wasn't enough to get gold curse? Which streamer is crying to rare that 1500 wins is too easy to the normal player.

Why didn't this even go through insider? This is such a random change that only the .01 percent wanted. See if your Matchmaking was good then maybe this would make sense but the matchmaking is awful so even getting to 100 is a grind. Now you want players to get over 2000 wins. Ugh.

  • No problem, the moment I'll get the skeleton curse I will never touch this mode again. Too time-consuming. The funny thing is that doing so they are basically encouraging defender alliance servers even more.

  • Yeah I feel completely defeated after two lose streak, getting stuck at level 80 the last two nights, and now waking up to this. I literally heard no streamers suggesting this… maybe I heard make 1-100 a little easier for all to be able to attain normal curse, but nobody was advocating for making 1000 harder. This is unobtainable unless I quit my job and life now. Huge disappointment and feel blindsided by rare. Who are they listening to cause it’s not the community.

And that’s my fear they are now making it so unobtainable it will be even harder cause matchmaking will be impossible due to only super sweats being in game. Revert it rare this was a horrid decision!

  • @selcaro a player would have to get almost 6 wins a day in order to get it in a year. This is so frustrating.

  • I agree that the grind to 200 needed to be harder since the level scaling restarted after reaching 100.

The grind to 1000 on the other hand... Such a random change.

  • After reading the patch notes, my new long-term goal is to not play the pvp mode.

  • My issue with it is adding a pveish type reward behind it

I support long pvp grinds after about level 200, it helps pvp it helps pve, it's a decent long term approach

the rewards just should have been pvp designed (like arenas)

100 is alright imo, people tanking fights even got at least one curse in like a week.

I would have done pvp outfits/pieces at the high end.

Long gaps are eh for longevity, have pieces of outfits along the way and make it super grindy so pvpers keep active and mostly satisfied with the content.

I am ok with setting pvp styled cosmetics realistically out of reach for most pvers in this content, the rewards just shouldn't be generally appealing imo

I would make a new pvp symbol and add it to clothing pieces, imo that really helps make it more appealing to peacock as a pvper and pvers can care less about the marked items.

  • @wolfmanbush

How can you even label cosmetics as "PVP/PVE styled"? They are just cosmetics.

Some feathers does not make a cosmetic PVP based just because arena rewards had them.

Glowing things are not PVE styled just because the existing ones are locked behind PVE.

  • I am in support of there being a more long term status symbol for the people who really wish to grind the system. I think they need more curses to fill the gaps between though. We're you actually planning on 1000? I am figured 110 at most for me. The bad thing is that the die hard PvP players are going to grind this out now then lvl 1000 will become an impossibility as more and more people abandon the system which is already starting to happen due to the exploits, hackers, being sailed out of bounds being a popular strategy but not allowing you to progress through the system.

Out of bounds making you a leaver and punishing you is probably a far worse issue and probably been brought up more than 1000 being too easy to obtain yet they haven't address this issue... From the notes it sounds like they fixed 1 more exploit at least. Alliances won't ever really be address I don't think. Even if they make it so you can't use the hourglass in an alliance I don't you can get merged out if a ship is really close by. Plus a new tactic I have been seeing is people are just logging in and seeing a reaper nearby so they sail over to create an unfair fight against the guardians so they both get an easy win. It's like before reapers would go after each other but now there is this unspoken bond of they are in this together, death to the enemy faction... Cool concept, but guardians can't see each other all they can do is be like "Hmmmm 2 or more reapers over here they must being teaming up against someone I should go check it out and maybe help"

I wonder if some of the people complaining were exploiters and they wanted to cheat their way to 1000 to feel special and try and insure people doing it properly don't stand a chance.

  • @krakalodon link to patch notes? am I blind?

  • @captain-coel https://www.seaofthieves.com/release-notes/2.7.0.1

  • @krakalodon ty the 2.7.1 link they had was busted.

Arena had a clear example of it, seadog set, pieces so people can mix and match, symbol clearly marking it.

Until it was announced that it was going away the people in arena wanted to be there.

That's the issue with not separating cosmetics in a similar way here. A skeleton and ghost curse are guaranteeing that pvers will do what they gotta do to try to get them (tanking fights, not wanting to be there while doing it)

It's counter productive to the design of the content to get people that don't want to be there to be there.

Far less pvers are going to try to get to 500..1000...1000+ over arenaesque type of designs.

They already have an example of the general approach for design of cosmetics because it largely was one of the successful parts of arena, it didn't have a significant amount of pvers trying to get cosmetics while not wanting to be there.

It sets a clear line between pve and pvp that largely serves both. Pvers can in their head accept that it's a pvp outfit and pvpers can peacock while playing the content long term.

Similar to glorious/triumphant have a few different color sets specifically for pvp with a weapon/fighting symbol. People can regularly be unlocking pieces and can mix and match.

  • I totally agree with Markiplier Lightyear. Why increase it beyond 100? I never heard of anyone saying that the road to 1000 was easy. I was already planning to leave the grind if I managed to get to 100, or maybe do 5 extra levels to get the legendary curse. But even if I didn't plan to go beyond that I can see that is going to be really painful for those who want the mysterious stranger clothes, or customize their skeleton curses.

Really, I never heard of anyone asking for 1000 to be harder to achieve, I don't know why they decided to change that. Meanwhile in the past 2 weeks there has been some discussions and debates about making the road to 100 easier or have an additional method, but there is no word about it in the patch notes.

  • The grind to level 1000 was already gonna be something that only less than 1% would achieved!

Since season 8 launched I’ve seen no one asked for the grind to become more difficult after 100, everyone even the intended players (hardcore pvp players) seem fine with the grind

The devs just wanted the long term goal to be even longer for the most hardcore players because of them progressing too fast for being too good at PvP and seem to not have consider about anyone slightly below them and how the long term goal might not be possible anymore for them.

I personally feel from level 100 to level 200 it should have gotten more difficult but after reaching level 200 it should gets a bit easier, marking the beginning of the grind to 1000 for any pvping loving pirates who still kept going after level 200

I appreciate this well thought out response. It really felt like all the input since season 8 fell on deaf ears with this being the only thing they choose to publicly acknowledge.

  • I saw that patch note and got really confused. Who was saying it was too easy? Most players are having a hard enough time getting to 100, and when the majority of players eventually does, they aren’t going to get to 1000. This is a terrible change that’ll just make people even less likely to play beyond 100.

The hardest core players already had a long term grind and that was hitting the max level of 9999 to get the last title. For two factions! And now what Rare has done has made it so after I get 200 with Athena, I won’t care to play the mode anymore.

I can’t believe they would do this instead of doing something people are actually asking for like fixing the terrible matchmaking system.

  • Wouldn’t be surprised if they added this because of all the cheesing going on.

  • nothing wrong with a huge grind for PvP focused players.. doesn't bother me

  • Y'all could have asked nicely if you didn't want me to play the new mode lol. Why punish everyone?

Vote with your activities. Let the pvp have their mode.

Out of all the feedback given, much of which people agree on, it's interesting that the "player feedback" that was catered to isn't really anything I've seen around publicly or privately.

Will just have to see where it goes I guess, if it's a step in grander plan it would benefit them to communicate that to people imo.

Doesn't really look great as is imo, looks like a disconnect is still there. It's also not part of any of the common feedback I've seen in twitch chats, specifically partners.

  • I will try to reach 1000 losing all the battles xD I'm in no hurry

  • Small percentage that was going for it turns into even smaller percent which will lead to even more unbalanced SBMM and longer que times.

I have advocated for keeping the curses hard to get and special so they would mean something, but at that point the golden versions of those curses wont be worth my sanity tho.

Only thing this change here reinforces is people not going beyond 200. Really confused by this change.

Reminds me of commodities and a few other things over the years, early on changes made based on extremes that ends up far more counterproductive to longevity than supportive of it.

This could work if they brought in a lot more cosmetics and didn't have huge gaps but the harming the activity part that so often comes with these changes doesn't work great.

They can claim direction but there are a lot of directions taken where content just sits there, rarely getting significant enough activity to keep it in a healthy spot.

Hopefully it doesn't go the way of commodities and people don't largely just move on from it over changes based on extremes.

This content has a LOT of potential but it very easily could end up like a lot of cool content in the game and people stop doing it in the kind of numbers that are needed for it to thrive.

Defender Alliances will die out when people get the curses. The golden ghost curse isn’t worth the effort.

I fear this is Arena all over again. These curses will just become Legacy cosmetics once the PvP mode is abandoned

  • Unbelievably tone deaf change.

  • Rare creates a progression monster that allows the animation canceling pvp gods to progress few dozen times faster than players with average skill, then they are pikachu shocked how fast the progression is for the top runners and decide to slow it down for everybody to fix the cursed design flaw. Where players needed some hope that the progression would improve for better we are being served depression. Big oof.

  • Seriously, who cleared this, they need to keep this mode popular so that everything works better. I was willing to try for a long-term golden skeleton, but now I don't know... I love this game, but I'm not the slave here.

Those who will have the gold curses in the next few months, will they really stop playing when they get them to this degree? No. So why cater to them? Give us all an attainable goal. Then when those hyper grinders play, they just get to show off the gold curses earlier. Does much change for them? No. Do things change for us? Yes. They change a lot.

It's bad enough that the hourglass says my matchmaking will be less than a minute but it takes me 10-15 to get into a match. How can I reasonably do this if I can't even play the mode?

Now I feel bad for needing to play almost none in November...

I'd worry more about this season turning into season 7 when it comes to people just playing other games.

This game is still a highly unique experience but what season 7 showed and this season may show is that it's not irreplaceable for a few months at a time to people that otherwise love the game.

This content is really the only content in literally years that has a chance to improve risk/reward and quality of life for all when it comes to pvp in the environment.

Over 4 years in with a 10 year plan I dunno how many more realistic chances they are going to get to improve the experiences between a clashing world of pve and pvp in this game.

Speeding up fights and improving the quality of matchmaking was all it really needed, the foundation was quite strong imo right out of the gate and it was running better than new content usually does. Would be unfortunate to see activity drop even more over this.

Everyone I know has indeed already bounced off of the update and is playing other games, including some friends who are pretty dedicated pvp oriented SoT players and were very excited for the update.

The fact that the game's actual PvP itself is still a very frustrating, borderline non-functional mess full of bugs really isn't helping. This kind of patch feels like a nail in the coffin, zero fixes to the long queue times or questionable compatibility of the streak and ELO systems and instead they increase the grind to 1000 by like 30% further discouraging people from playing.

I've played pretty close to the same way every day for years. Same piratical approach, most of the same interests and activity. Comparable time played solo (not counting times I played open crew)

My recently played now goes back a couple+ weeks and has for a few seasons. The list used to go back a couple of days because of all the encounters.

I just see very few people now, playing the same way. A way that has always encountered both pvers and pvpers.

Random encounters happen but they have no consistency like they once did. It's the occasional new players and people around the streaming part of the community.

People can say this or that about where that activity went or didn't go but it's not where it once was because I've been doing the same thing a long time and have watched it decline and long posted about it.

People also avoid each other far more now other than for conflict/combat, a lot of that random fun/funny/weird/silly/bizarre stuff is down significantly.

  • This mode is going to DIE quickly

Once people hit 100, they will never play it again... because WHY?

  • Alright rare, please show each and every post where people said the grind wasn't enough.
Putting my "bias" aside, for real though, who? Like who asked for that?

  • @moogbeard

The fact that the game's actual PvP itself is still a very frustrating, borderline non-functional mess full of bugs really isn't helping.

Ok there are problems but it ain't that bad... naval is nearly flawless in terms of bugs, and that's where 80% of the fight is for this update.
97% of the shots I've seen crosshairs for, have damaged the target.
Getting destroyed by stray blunderbuss shots or having the odd sword ping issue has been frustrating, but if the positives didn't outweigh the negatives, I wouldn't be here.

It's the same problem as with milestones: Rare wants to give us more long-term goals, because the base sandbox is not going to last forever with a lot of the player base. So they give us some really hard to reach goals to try and keep us playing... The problem is:

    • Their ways of giving us long term goals have recently just been slaps to the face and disrespectful of the player's time.
    • I don't need a farther away incentive to keep playing Sea of Bones (casually). I love PvP and the gold/dopamine payout is very good.

I don't like seeing the disrespect they give us with these things... but to be honest i kind of deserve this because I've always been asking for more hard-to-get stuff so I have something to work towards again. Just nothing this drastic LOL
