Idea for developers - Pirate City/Faction wars/Dungeons.

  • Ya'harr mateys,

I was reading quite a bit of discussions regarding ideas for new areas for Sea of Thieves and all the pros and cons and I have thought I would share an idea that I came up with.

If you play sea of thieves for some time, you might have noticed that this game requires your full attention for 2-3 hours non stop(At least!). Although this is very manageable, let's say during the weekend etc, this is not always possible. Developers have mentioned that they want this game to be family friendly. Where a small child, a teenager, an adult, a parent and even a senior would enjoy it and love it equally.
If you are a seasoned player, you are not excited anymore about making 10-20k on your journey, as things you are interested in cost millions. So if you don't have a regular galleon crew and several hours on your hands, you will most likely not launch the game at all and wait until you have more time.

So I thought I would suggest something, which could take sea of thieves in a new direction, which would be appreciated by players with less time on their hands and everyone who is missing the Arena.

Pirate City - how about an area which could be accessed from main menu and also from the main map, just like the Athenas fortune.

The city would be a non PVP zone, where you would have all the shops, maybe some family friendly mini games and maybe a casino, where you could spend doubloons/ancient coins for a chance to win some rarer cosmetics?

The main draw of this city could be some PVP activities. Let's say faction wars with various game modes. 4v4/5v5 mode like Counter Strike or COD or similar, where you would need to arm or disarm a massive ancient Keg (or something new even more powerful to correctly represent the threat of it being detonated) Capture the flag, Team forts, etc.

We were given a Quiz on the main website to determine what pirate are you (even though I don't fish, somehow my faction is Hunters call). What I'm trying to say, players could choose a faction they could represent for those team fight activities.
This would give a great opportunity for developers to bring back Pirate Lords children as representatives of these activities in the pirate city, where each would choose a faction for the month - Let's say Reapers vs Merchants. Gold Hoarders vs Order of Souls etc.

I believe such area could help a lot of players to improve their PVP skills with cutlass/weapons and also satisfy that itch if you don't have time. I would imagine every match would last no longer than 15-25 minutes. So if you only have 1 hour to play, you would still get an amazing, meaningful experience without having to commit half a day to this game. Obviously it is only a portion of what Sea of Thieves has to offer, therefore I don't believe it would affect the main map at all.

Another thing which would be interesting to see, would be player co-op dungeons. We have many tall tales, the POTC pirate's life etc. The content that developers come up with is very creative, so I could only imagine how awesome those dungeons could be.

If I think of anything more I shall add it (obviously if the feedback is not overwhelmingly negative). At the same time, I am aware about the game being limited due to old consoles, but I would imagine this could be achieved some time in the future.

    What do you guys think?

  • I think it sounds nice in theory, but I worry about it taking pirates away from the actual adventure - feeling safe, they would stay in their beloved pirate city, and there would be nobody to hunt or steal from or even interact or ally with. In essence, I think it would kill Adventure.

As for the dungeons, we technically already have those in the form of TTs, adventures, and various caves, forts, Sea Forts, shrines, and treasuries...

I have some concerns as well, but to be honest with you, this would only happen if they made it better than the actual game ^^

I honestly can not speak for other people, but personally I currently have close to 500 hours in this game. If Sea of thieves had something meaningful to do in let's say 30mins to 1 hour. I would surely have over 1000 at least.

For example. I'm working now until Thursday. I will finish at 19h, be home around 20h. This leaves me about 2-3hours tops to do anything. I can't wait for my day off to play this game, but until then I don't see a point digging up marauders chests with a chance of ancient chalice or ancient crate to make extra 100 with level 1-2 emissary. I'm sure a lot of people can relate. You really need to dedicate yourself to play this game.

Solo players would love this, people with commitments would love this. Think about it.

At the same time, many people over the years have suggested to implement a place that you could buy where it would be your own private island/house etc. A place like this I think would be a perfect place for that. It would not be on the main server, so it would not create balance issues for the actual game. Currently with the game becoming more and more 'personal' it would allow for developers to create that little paradise for themselves that everybody wants. You walk through some door/gate/whatever in that city, load into a 'private server' and you could have your ships docked. Your own quarters with all these new cosmetics and trinkets that you unlock. At the same time you could finally have all your pets running around too.

Having such flexibility surely would take some players away from the main game, for sometime at least. But at the same time it would bring in a lot of fresh pirates. This game could truly become that pirate fantasy with more things to do.

In order to prevent people from just 'living there' you could simply limit the rewards. Let's say if you play that 5v5 or whatever mode, you will be earning rewards (gold/doubloons/etc) but once you claim your 5 daily rewards. You will not have incentives to stay there anymore, unless you really want to get better at PVP without earning anything.

Also, having given the example of lack of time to commit to the game. I currently find myself taking space in the main server, which is already limited to 5 ships, just customizing my ship, browsing shops to see what I have unlocked etc. All this could be done on your private island/quarters?

    just my two ancient coins.

  • Pirate City sounds like designing a completely different game on top of the existing SoT. Nice in theory but in practice no Dev team in the world would be convinced to create a second game within their game. Not unless they started out with this as their main goal like say Star Citizen, which wants to be an FPS shooter, Space Sim, Life Sim, PvEvP MMO RPG.
