Pirate Appearance Potion "Security"

  • Pretty simple thing, protect your ancient coins from being wasted:

Choose your pirate before you buy the potion.

I don't know how hard it is to do something like this, and I don't know why it wasn't like this since its release, it feels a bit more secure for those who want to just have a look instead of wasting coins, then being bugged about it every time you log in should you change your mind before changing your pirate.

You should also be able to preview your currently equipped clothing set on the pirates so you know what you're getting if you're after a certain look and absolutely love your current fit, but that's a whole different thing

  • That sounds like an amazing idea! I’d love to be able to preview my pirates clothing on a different pirate i think id like.

Having to see your new pirate in game to see if you like it would also be a great feature. Especially if you’re picky or looking for certain details.

In the selection wheel you sometimes can’t tell if the pirate you selected has missing teeth or not depending what you prefer so seeing it in game first would help a lot!

I can tell you why it wasn't like this since release...on release of the game, it didn't exist! You choose a character and had to deal with it, period!
Ok, you could have deleted it, with all the progress...
That potion came much later, 1,5 or 2 years after release...

Anyway...what sense does that make? Let me guess, you can't find a better one than your old character, now you want it back? Oh...how sad...not...

I... I know the potion didn't exist until later on. I meant the release of the potion itself, not release of the entire bloody game...

"Do not cite the deep magic to me, Witch. I was there when they were written"

I've personally only used the potion once, and I'm satisfied with my choice, however, lots of players aren't, and this is a fairly basic QOL change, nothing dramatic. Hostility over a potion much...?

I mean that is a little sad.

  • Yeah a system like this would be perfect and easy to implement.

Just take people to the selection menu and give the option to CONFIRM or QUIT. They only get charged after pressing confirm

Problem Solved, now let's see it happen

  • Don't buy the potion unless you are absolutely positively certain that a) you want to change your pirate and b) you'll be perfectly happy with anyone else other than your current pirate.

    There! REAL problem solved!

  • I wouldn't be outright opposed to this honestly. You could simply have it work as such:

    • Select Pirate Appearance Potion in Emporium
    • Loads Infinite Pirate Generator
    • If Player Backs Out - No Coins Spent, No Reminder Notification
    • If Player Selects Pirate - Confirmation Message and Charge Coins on Confirm

Done and done, you now have a preview and less need to bug people that picked one up and haven't used it yet each session. This may even prompt some people to purchase these more/in general when they wouldn't have before because they will be able to roll Pirates whenever and if they stumble on to one they like more they will now buy the Potion. Compared to the current system where you have to commit Coins before knowing you'll be satisfied with your generated options, which I suspect will put some people off from even considering it.

Just a thought, cause this isn't flat out a bad idea to iterate on an existing system.

  • @galactic-geek yeah sure that's the current rule with the appearance potion but I see no reason why people content with their pirate shouldn't have the opportunity to confidently make them selves happier with a different pirate without gambling on their current pirate with the use of this proposed quality of life improvement

Ohhh wow of course why didn't I think of that before...

Just because there's a way around it doesn't mean we can't improve what we already have.

The pirate appearance potion isn’t meant for people who are content with their pirate and want to make their pirates look better. This potion is for people who made a mistake in choosing their pirates in the first place and want to change it without starting over.

When I first bought the Sea of Thieves I had no idea about the even playing field. Normally a bigger pirate means a stronger pirate. Some people could have easily made that mistake. Other could want a skinny pirate for tucking. The potion is meant for dramatic changes to your pirates not slightly different adjusting.

With wigs, beards, tattoos, scars and clothing it’s difficult to see the slightest scars or features that are on your pirate from the random generation. That’s why I see no reason to get rid of the random generator and give us default pirates to choose from. With a variety of players you will never find another player wearing the exact same clothing.

  • I think that's a fantastic QoL change, but...

I'm sure this was a decision by the people that manage the numbers. If they give you the freedom to look before you buy, then you may never buy. If you're forced to buy before you look, you never know if the grass is greener on the other side...but at least they got your money right? :)

Why not make it available for everyone though? I know plenty of people in the SoT official Discord that love to just reroll their pirates and see what they get, they like to call it a potion addiction. It wouldn't be BAD if they implemented the change I suggested overall since it's small and benefits EVERYONE interested in potions at any time.

Again, that could still be supported. Also more money for Rare.

Did you actually read my post? I'm not saying get rid of the IPG, I'm saying be able to view the IPG before buying the potion, because not everyone wants to do it right away, or others want to see whats available just for fun!

  • @gallerine5582

Did you read my post? I’m not saying get rid of the pirate appearance potion. I’m saying don’t use it unless you are unhappy with your pirate and you want a completely different one.

Everyone gets 250 free Ancient Coins each season. That’s more than enough to buy the potion so it’s free and available to those who work for it.

My post was about not using the potion to remove or add a facial feature that can only be given by the random pirate generator

  • This is a very simple request. No idea why anyone would oppose it. It’s just whether Rare want to bother. Which is up to them.

What?? I didn't say you meant getting rid of the potion either, you're plucking these random thoughts out of the ether and I have absolutely no clue where any of it started.

Yes but those coins could also be put towards the next pass, or put towards something greater, it's just dumb that one would have to waste coins they might be saving up for something larger. A small change like this doesn't hurt anyone overall and makes the potion look less like a scam because a lot of people already are happy with their pirate, but like me when I used a potion; wanted to look for something better. I get that it isn't the original intention of the potion, but they could easily support that and likely get more sales.

My post was about not using the potion to remove or add a facial feature that can only be given by the random pirate generator

    I can see that, but you randomly picked up the idea that either I, or someone else, wanted the IPG removed;

That’s why I see no reason to get rid of the random generator and give us default pirates to choose from.

which I haven't seen anything about that on this thread.

Even better, AFAIK you're not committed when creating a new pirate, you can just cancel the IPL and use the potion later on.

  • Yes Please Rare I would reroll my pirates look more often if I could see my cosmetics on them before!

  • I've always wanted this to be added and incase I mis-click and lose my pirate forever! I had a nightmare like this once "shudders"
