I recently re-watched this:
https://www.seaofthieves.com/community/forums/topic/136693/pvpve-the-team-s-thoughts/1
Specifically I watched the segment on the PvP vs PvE debate, which I found very interesting.
For those without the time to watch the stream over again, the Devs made it clear that they want Sea of Thieves to be a game where stories are formed and told together with other players. For that reason, they've chosen to keep the game PvP.
However, that was 7 months ago. A LOT has changed since then (thank you rare for the amazing rate and quality of your updates) and I think this conversation needs to be re-opened, and re-evaluated as a community. At launch, the only things to do were basic voyages, or fight players. But the game is now FULL of activities that can be fun to undertake with your friends (Skeletons ships, megaladons, improved voyages, tall tales, fishing achievements, sunken ruins, ect) these new activities also pose significant threat to your loot haul, whereas before, the only thing that could take the loot away from a careless pirate was other players. For some, like myself (usually) the added threat of other players prowling nearby makes these activities more fun. However, as I explained in a previous post...
https://www.seaofthieves.com/community/forums/topic/143648/time-to-talk-about-player-toxicity
...the added threat of other players is serving as a major deterrent for the games younger or more casual player base, a player base Rare is now openly marketing to with their Pirates Life update.
I think it's time to re-open the discussion of PvE vs PvP, and how we can bring in the next generation of Pirates to the Sea of Thieves
