Buried Treasure

  • Hello, I am new to the Sea of Thieves forums. I had an idea, and I am not sure if it has been discussed before. Anyway here it goes.

Players would be able to dig a spot somewhere and bury some of their treasure and supplies. A map for where it is would be created and carried by the player. This would persist to future game sessions, allowing a player to store loot and supplies for a future game session. It would de-spawn if the player is not in session and spawn when a player joins a server. If another player kills you, the map would appear on the body and be just like any other treasure map.

The treasure that is stored for a future session could potentially be worth more, making it enticing to save the treasure for later, at the risk of somebody recovering your map.

I am sure there are all sorts of things you would want to consider, like if it should be allowed to bury treasure on an outpost and how much should you be allowed to bury. I think five treasure items and one storage chest with outposts being restricted. Perhaps there would be more opportunities for other players to find it, like at least one message in a bottle being spawned with a map to the treasure or at least a hint about it.

Anyway, what do you all think?

    Hi,

I actually like this idea. I am sure there will be reasons why it isn't practical though. Perhaps one of the only drawbacks is maybe server tracking - it will be working quite hard to register and remember when people have buried it according to despawn/spawn in?

Also, I'm not sure how the lore would accommodate the re-evaluation of treasure e.g - how will the increase in it's worth be explained.

Otherwise, I think this is a cool idea.

    Cheers

  • @mr-talmadge I don't quite agree that it should persist to future sessions, i think it would be better if it were only session based just like the ones you find in barrels/orders/bottles. Just to start small.

Anyways, I always thought of burying treasure as a solution to prevent loot despawning when a server merge happens. You know when you offer xy worth of loot waiting on xy island to make someone do something for you and then a server merge happens and it's all gone. or when your ship sinks and no way to travel so you catch a mermaid so you can return and happily- NOPE! Server merge!
So unless we can bury our treasure to prevent this.... My best hiding spot still remains the notorious server merge.

  • Good idea but definitely not carried across sessions. Also when your killed the guy who killed you should get your map to your buried hoard

  • I don't think this game should do this. Why? Because the it sort of breaks what this game sets out to do by giving players a giant safety net to not get loot stolen.

Being able to squirrel loot away to dig up at a later, most likely safer, time breaks the game. Any player could hypothetically server log all high value loot. Dig up an Athena? Bury it and log out to avoid getting it stolen by that crew that has been tracking you for an hour. Whats the point of developing a game that encourages players to steal from each other, only to give players a way to effectively avoid it? I get it, no one likes getting stolen from. However, its in the nature of the game. I steal from players, they steal from me.

There is also this notion of digging a chest only to waste time and bury it again. At that point, just turn it in. You spend as much time re-burying it, if not more, than it would take just to turn it in. The only reason I see players burying loot is to do what I talked about above. As much as buried treasure is tied to Pirate Fantasy, it just doesn't really fit this game.
