A way for Rare to add in new ships while still keeping the same crew limits

  • Yes a talked to death topic, new ships, many people suggest new, bigger, more powerful, ships with higher crew limits like the 6 player Man o War idea. As of now the current crew limits are very nice and can (sometimes) give a nice mix of ships and players. Adding in a 6 player ship could break it. My idea however would keep the same crew limits for the Sloop, Brigantine, and Galleon, but allow for a variety of ships to be placed into a crew size category.

As you know when setting sail, you are given 3 options, Sloop for 1-2 players, Brigantine for 1-3 players, and the Galleon for 1-4 players. But, what could be changed is instead of having it separated by ship, rather crew limits so when settings sail you'd be presented with instead of ships, a player count in which you could select, 2, 3, or 4, this would then take you to a menu to choose a ship based on the crew limit.

So selecting 2 would give you a selection of ships with a max crew count of 2 players. So you of course would get the Sloop, but this would allow Rare to add in new ships, but keep the player count the same.

This would primarily be used to make a variety of ships out on the seas because let's face it seeing the same 3 ships over and over for years will get boring after a while, but it would balance out the 24 player server limit.

Now you might ask, but what about other characteristics such as cannon count, speed, turning radius etc, well, that's up to Rare, but personally I would say keep it the same. The ships in the game were made to keep a balance, no need to make it anymore complex, so I'd say if you choose a 2 player ship or a 4 player ship, keep all that the same to their respective categories, for example, a new 4 player ship has the same functions as the current Galleon, a new 3 player ship has the same functions as the current Brigantine, etc.

Now I don't know what the dev team has said about new ships, but considering I've seen recently of people on here asking for new ships and no one saying anything like "Oh they said new ships won't happen", that has made me come to the conclusion that either new ships will/might come, or the devs haven't made any comment on new ships.

Thank you for reading this insanely long suggestion, please give feedback on it and your thoughts on the idea below. I also don't know if something like this has been suggested before, and in case it hasn't (unlikely), I figured I might as well.

  • @jackthedragon1 You're effectively just asking for more cosmetics. I suppose you could go a step further and adjust the models of the ships, but then you're talking about various gameplay adjustments such as sail design and barrel placement. That's a lot for a dev to work on. Not to mention they would have to re-adapt all of the currently released cosmetics for the new designs, and increase their workload for future cosmetics releases. More than anything, this I think is precisely why you won't see it happen.

  • Im never bored of seeing the same Sloop ships sailing around...it only when I see a Galleon ship for the first time in months does my blood burn with wonder and mystery.

  • @galactic-geek I did actually mean changing the models, that's what I meant by "adding in new ships", but I did not take into consideration the amount of ship cosmetics we have and do agree that it would take a long time for the devs to do that. It does make sense as to why we've had the same 3 ships for a while.

  • Of all the things that seem repetitive in SoT, seeing the same three ships for three years ain't one of them.
But more is better so if new vessels are added, let them be for adding new ways to play.
The addition of the sloop was game changing.
The addition of the brigantine also made a huge splash.
The rowboat was added as a necessity for exploring the Devils Roar and serves as a lifeboat.

For example, Rare could introduce a coracle, a very small one man paddle craft that is portable. Not really needed, but think of the hijinks that would inspire.
New boats should bring new gameplay, not just a different look for a similar craft.
Except for something exotic like a junk with a crew of three.

I'm still amazed by the ships we have.

  • yea this could work, you could have the base version, then you could have one with 2 cannons on each side (sloop) which would be called the battle sloop and would be harder to manage and slower, then the normal sloop, then you could have the speed sloop, it has a bigger wheel, so worse turning radius however its sail has 2 cross beams making it harder to move back and forth but also faster with the wind and slightly slower into the wind. same variants across all the other ship types. yea that could work.

  • Being a developer is exhausting, but designing a new ship or addons isn't the issue. There are game developers working twice as much but doesn't get the same amount of income as Rare. You know, we bought the game, and their job is to update the game frequently for supporters... And we are supporters. And some people say that it's a lot of work to implement ships. Well, the developers choose to be in this position, as a developer, so they must be loving this job! Designing ships, animations etc. That's something they love to do. If they didn't like it, they wouldn't have added the monthly updates we enjoyed. So I would say that it's a great idea to suggest something like this.

    @Jackthedragon1
I think these suggestions are quite good. We need some variation. New ships will make the seas more interesting, same with combat. And I can confirm that yes, it's extremely boring to see the same regular ships sailing around. With different ships, combat would be incredibly different too.
