Aren't 6 versions of the game... a bit too much?

  • You guys are now dealing with 6 slightly different version of the game (Xbox One, One X, Series S, Series X, Microsoft Store and Steam), I'm not a developer and my programming knowledge is almost non existing, but CDPR recently delayed Cyberpunk 2077 released date claiming it takes time to work on 9 different versions of the game, keeping them bug-free and testing them. Is it the same for Rare? does it take more time for them too? Maybe it has come the time to stop working on Xbox One and S for the sake of developing the game faster and better? (while keeping some servers open for the "old gen" Xbox players that wish to keep playing the game even tho they are not getting updates) I believe at some point in the next years Rare will need to stop supporting these versions, I know the team working on SoT is small.

What do you guys think about it? Has Rare said anything about this?

EDIT:I just realised I probably posted in the wrong section

  • @pellahh There are not 6 versions of the game per se. They are all the same game pretty much but some have additional assets or a different launcher (Steam). There is really no difference between the Windows 10 version and Steam outside of the store which you get it and the launcher - both run on Windows 10. Every Xbox version is EXACTLY the same at its core (especially since they run via BC on the Series S/X), there are just additional assets to enhance the graphics. It is no different than PCs supporting various resolutions based on your equipment, just easier because there aren't as many configurations to account for.

In reality there are only 2 versions of the game - Xbox One and Windows (Steam is still a Windows build, it is not running on the Steam OS - it only has the integration of their services in it), and there is not too much difference between those. There is no separate Series S/X versions, they are just enhanced when running on those consoles (same with the One X). The original consoles that they were DESIGNED for are not increasing development time since they are the base version. Maybe you missed there is a global event affecting MANY businesses that is causing games to take longer developing and squash bugs because they have to work remotely, making it harder to collaborate together.

And how do you know the team working on Sea of Thieves is small?

  • @dlchief58 Then if you throw in how Microsoft was promoting this heavily as one of its first "Play Anywhere" titles, and the fact that it was built using UWP, I wonder how different the Xbox and PC versions really are.

  • @dlchief58 ha detto in Aren't 6 versions of the game... a bit too much?:

Maybe you missed there is a global event affecting MANY businesses that is causing games to take longer developing and squash bugs because they have to work remotely, making it harder to collaborate together.

Didn't miss that, but CDPR claims on their delay also mentioned the fact that it's hard for them to work on so many versions of the game, which made me think if that's the same for Rare.

And how do you know the team working on Sea of Thieves is small?

I read that on a post not too long ago, seems like there was a lot (if not all) of Rare devs working on SoT in 2018 (and pre-release obviusly) but then most of them moved to another project (Everwild probably).

  • It’s logical my mates, in a few years the Xbox one couldn’t handle more big updates because of the hardware memory issues! So at some point rare is stop supporting the game on Xbox one like gta online a few years ago, that was launched first on XB 360 and PS3!

I think it’s like you Said there will be one last update and People can keep playing, but if they want the new stuff they must switch to PC or Series X / S(but I think Xbox one x can keep playing too, the hardware is good) Only XB One and One S players like me must be secluded and this playerbase is shrinking now every day because ppl switching to the next gen over time!

  • There is one version of the game

The devs are having trouble because of covid

And because of covid rare had to cut down there dev team size, normally its a good size

  • It's impossible to play the game with an outdated version, because bugfixes and balanced changes wouldn't transfer
