Community Islands and the Sea of Thieves Island Creator!

  • Hi!

I had an idea today, I think it's a pretty good one.

So, the community wants new islands and places to explore in this game all the time, this is the general consensus I've been able to put together from a bunch of people I've met playing the game.

So, why not let the community make the islands themselves? Much like how Halo has had it's custom mapping tools for a while, or the Hammer Editor for Source games, Sea of Thieves could get it's own version that would allow those who are creatively inclined to create an island, send it to Rare for review, and have it added to a list of randomly spawning islands on the edges of the Shroud! (This would line up in the lore, by the by, since the Shroud itself has been said to peel away and encroach of it's own volition)

Another, smaller idea I've had in relation to this could be some sort of pioneering trading company dedicated to reaping the rewards of these islands, maybe with map charting or something of that ilk, but new places to explore are their own reward, as is seeing some of that raw creativity people have put to good use.

Please let me know what you think of this idea below, and if you like it, please upvote this so it gets seen by the Rare Staff! Thanks!

  • Y r we asking for additions to custom servers before custom servers are out?

Unless ur suggesting people can change it in official servers, could u even fathom the bugs it would create.

  • @doomscorp This has nothing to do with Custom Servers, this is akin to the Block in Fortnite. Areas on the map with community created content that is randomly cycled in and out of the game for everyone.

  • @rorenxbox There is only 1 Sea.

  • @galactic-geek ??? ok? what does this mean

  • @rorenxbox said in Community Islands and the Sea of Thieves Island Creator!:

@galactic-geek ??? ok? what does this mean

It means there aren't thousands upon thousands of different areas created by players. There is only 1 location - and that is the Sea of Thieves. We don't (directly) control how it changes. We participate in events, and the devs make changes accordingly.

  • I like your idea,

I actually thought about this as well. Maybe a spot to store your loot for the game, maybe it gets cursed over time, increasing the value of that loot. Comes with that is an indicator or something that lets the people on the server know that there is a high reward there.

Having the ability for others to raid your fort would be nice too. Maybe giving the option for people to upgrade their island to increase defenses (ex: skeletons/fort tower).

I don't know how likely Rare would add this, but I would really enjoy to see this twist to the game. Tons of potential here.

  • @galactic-geek I think you misunderstand the post.

  • @aussei This isn't exactly my idea, I just want talented mappers from the community to show their own creative side in the game.

  • They'd need to create, release and support a set of mapping tools that would never get used for the live game unless they pick a few islands from likely thousands of submissions. Unlike most games with map editors and content tools, there's no offline mode to test your work and there's no way to host your own content - it all has to be done by Rare and they would have to vet everything that gets used to make sure it doesn't have holes in the map or inappropriate content hidden away somewhere.

It's a lot of work for very little payoff, so it's not likely to ever happen.
