Steam Workshop: Sea of Thieves

  • I think Sea of Thieves should open up to the steam workshop to allow players to create ship skins, similar to CSGO fan skins. Rare could release the default sailor textures, file size limits, etc. and the fanbase could create their own skins, which could then be uploaded and voted on on the workshop. It'd be a cool way for fans to show off their art skills as well as hope to contribute to the game. It'd also help with the lack of cosmetics that are coming to the store, as fans would always be creating new ones.

Steam has such extras for CS? Wow I didn't know! This sounds so cool!

How are the cosmetics controlled and distributed though? Is there an approval process or something?

  • @mferr11 I'd like that, the best couple each month then get put into the game, course if you let everyone make one therd be a lot of work for Rare.

Personally I'd like to start making my own islands, be nice to have community created tall tales.
Wake up on an island, search around for your ship parts to rebuild your ship and return to the Sea of Thieves.

  • @greengrimz It is pretty cool. The community can make their own skins for guns, in SoT's case ships, and then once they've finished they upload it to the workshop. The community votes on which ones they'd like to see in game, and then it comes down to the devs. If they like your submission, they'll contact you to sort out the details, and you get a cut of the money that your item generates from key sales, case sales or straight up purchases.

Since cosmetics in SoT are bought with in game gold and not real money, you wouldn't be getting paid in cash, but perhaps get paid with a cut of gold every time someone purchases your ship skins? However I can definitely see how this could be abused, and I'd be completely fine with no compensation for making skins.

  • What about the ones who cant access the workshop?
    Xbox?

  • @burnbacon Not much can be done about that. It's just how it is, anyone who wants to make a skin would need steam.

  • As long as it's community voted and dev-approved before being implemented, I wouldn't mind. I want it to ensure quality.

  • @mferr11

Sounds like a really nice win-win kind of system honestly.

The custom cosmetics could sell for ancient coins though, so creators clould be getting that instead of just gold.

  • @burnbacon

They simply bear fruits of the system?
