A "Mayday" Flag

  • I was doing the summer challenges and while I was struggling with getting someone to sit on a throne with me, I had an idea:

Why not make a "Mayday" flag indicating that you need help with something ?

Of course, and it could be an interesting gameplay, you could totally fake the mayday call and just trap the people that come to help. Pirate life is hard and tricky ^^

You could also get tricked into thinking someone is coming to help, while infact they're only here for your shinies!

Definitely a nice and simple idea, with a breath of fresh air to it.

BUT, people in this game get so easily offended. I can already see the sea of snowflake (get it?) posts.

  • I like it - sort of a companion to the Reaper's flag, but instead signalling your need for help rather than your desire for a fight.

And of course it could be used to lure the unwary, that's part of the risk of the Seas.

  • Or just use the Reaper's Flag - all its intention is, is to show to others where you are.

Getting attacked is just optional 😉.

At this point, I just see it as a display of force. When I fly it people avoid you. It's at this point I feel like all those PvE sailors should just fly Reapers at this point to avoid conflict. Works for me apparently even though that is the opposite of what I desire.

Tuna is sometimes referred as "Chicken of the Seas," but those people have never met Sea of Thieves players avoiding anyone flying Reapers.

  • Traditionally the bilge rats (red/orange with a white rat) flag was used for this purpose when we had time limited bilge rat voyages in the past.

  • I would just use the Reaper's flag, but it's context in regards to how you intend to use it is important, as is how other crews perceive it.

For example, I waited for over 3 hours at Cannon Cove, and then at Shipwreck Bay with it flying and while standing at the highest points of both islands and nobody ever came. All I wanted was for someone to sit on their respective bone thrones with me - but there was no way for anyone to know that. I was even carrying a boatload of loot ready to pay them as a reward for their help. Still, nobody came.

The entire time, a Reaper's Chest had not been far off. I retrieved it in the Hope's that it would get somebody's attention. Placed it directly on the thrones too, with the hope that someone would take a close look at their map table and understand the importance of its placement. Still no dice.

I decided that the flag was keeping pirates away, so I took it down, and waited a bit longer. Nothing. Not a sign of anyone anywhere.

I was starting to think that the server might have been empty.

So, I decided to sail towards the RBH. As luck would have it, as I did so, a ship sailed right up to SWB. I immediately anchor-turned and pulled out my speaking trumpet. It took 3 tries during the chase for them to finally decide I wasn't a danger to them. He helped me as I helped him, he got paid handsomely, and I went to go eat dinner with my family.

  • I remember when the Bilge Rat Adventures Flag was introduced for this very reason but that seems to be not used anymore nowadays.

  • @nerelya This would be a great idea if the game was more PVE orientated or that side separated.

Right now everyone could see you just like a reaper, but assume your an easy target.
This would not work out well for those who are indeed in need of help.

    Just my opinion.
