Can Sea mines be added eventually?

  • I've only recently started playing the game, coming from Guns of Icarus. One of the things I've immediately noticed on this game, was that you really can't outrun a player (unless you are a galleon with the wind for some physically-incorrect reason) who's doggedly chasing you. Be it you're low on supplies, or you have too much to lose. I've even knocked out all of the sails of a galleon, and they were still able to stay on my tail against the wind. Jibed to force them to make slow as molasses turns (forcing them to drop anchor to do the same maneuver) And tore through tiny rocks to force him to waste time by going around. Still no good.

Generally a ship has charges or some other junk that they can toss into the water behind themselves, or an aft cannon to dissuade or slowdown persuing ships to gain ground. Right now... it's borderline impossible to outrun a ship. Often times just forcing you to stand your ground, run off the edge of the map, or try to wedge them into rocks (where there's not enough massive rock clusters for smaller ships to navigate through. So depending on circumstances... there's too little you can do to put that fight in your favor.

Even if you are a smaller ship, near a volcano, with the volcano constantly hammering on a galleon. So can we please give ships a fighting chance to flee, rather than pull an S.S. Bumble Bee (Kill yourselves just to cause the enemy some minor harm out of spite)? Something like Sea mines you need to load onto your ship?

  • Gunpowder barrels can be used as sea mines, because they float and explode on impact against a moving ship (provided, of course, you're not holding onto it).

A lot of pirates will jump overboard with 1 and carry it to the pursuing ship, letting go only moments before impact. As the explosion occurs, they can climb their ladder, drop their anchor, and with a little bit of luck distract the other crew just long enough to either sink them at best or slow them down at worst.

Even better, carry a bunch of them (you can find up to 10 at a single fort) - that way, you can drop several at once to ensure that they won't be able to shoot them all, all without ever leaving your ship (just make sure they're right behind you with little recourse to well, change course).

Did not know about that. Unfortunately we did not have time to grab the bombs. And I wish we grabbed the fort bomb rather than blowing it up.

But are there any other methods to make escape possible? As we did manage to knock out there sails several times... And that seemed to do as much as praying to davy jones for deliverance.

Your best bet for trying to stop someone from chasing you is to jump off your boat and try to board them, with some crews this is difficult to achieve because they will listen for the boarding sound, so you might have to get creative. For example, you can board on the right side, they all come to you, and you can have your teammate board on the left, so whilst they are distracted by you, your teammate can come in and anchor them.

Most of the time you just need to get their anchor down once or twice in order for you to get enough distance from them so you can sell. If you have a lot of loot and you don't want to take the fight, just keep jumping off and anchoring them. If you get the anchor down you can jump off with loot at an outpost and keep your ship moving forward so they can't catch up.

  • Sea mines?
    Hmmm....powder kegs....

  • I would only be for this is if some form of counter play exists. Right now, the lead ships in chases have a distinct advantage due to their positioning. They are the only ship that can actually launch any form of offensive without actually have to risk their ship.

If they are added, I feel like some of the following should be implemented. They should also act in a different capacity than Kegs.

    1. Harpoons can pick them up. When not in water they are nonvolatile, so no shooting it if they do in fact harpoon it.
    2. Can be shot while in water and detonated.
    3. Some method of disarming while floating in the water to be collected later.
    4. High obvious visibility to the point of obnoxious.
  • They do. They are called powder kegs.
