There was a pirate who sought for Gold, they even became a Gold Hoarder emissary to show their dedication, but to prove it, they decided to go for the ultimate goal.

They were currently a Marauder, so with their little sloop, the pirate set sail on his adventure. He defeated some Ashen Guardians, uncovered treasure, found a shipwreck with two Ruby Gems, found two Sapphire Gems and then a true prize, a Reaper's Chest.
With loot in hand, and Grade 3 Emissary, they went to Galleon's Grave to sell their loot as a precaution in-case of other pirates as they were marked with the Reaper's Curse. After selling it all, they achieved their goal of reaching Gold Captain, and were then planning to end their adventure with selling the Reaper's Chest, but that is until they noticed an all-too familiar skull shaped cloud in the sky, right above Shark Fin Camp. They figured "Why the hell not?" and went to the camp to take on the fort's denizens.
After a gruelling battle and constant respawning, they succeeded and defeated the fort and took the loot and reached Grade 5 Emissary.
Now I could say the story ends here, they go to Galleon's Grave again, sell the loot, head to The Reaper's Hideout and sell the chest there and retire for the day, a typical happy ending... but that's not how the story goes.
The pirate checked his map to mark the outpost only to be shocked by what they saw, a flag that horrifies even the most bravest and daring of pirates. The Reaper's Flag, but not just any flag, a Grade 5 Emissary flag... Even if the pirate didn't have the Reaper's Chest, he would still be sighted by the mystical power that emanates from that cursed flag.
In a rush, they set sail immediately hoping to avoid them, spotting them to be a Brigantine, leaving them very little chance to escape due to the ship's strong speed compared to that of the measly sloops.
Realising they still have a Stronghold Keg from the Fort in their possession, they decided to jump overboard to get rid of it to avoid it being used against them. They blew themselves up but were unable to harm the Brig due to distance.
After they returned to the living, it was too late... their ship became the Reaper's target and they lost everything, their flag, their loot, all of it to the Reaper's.
But despite that, the pirate didn't mind, he already achieved his goal on becoming a Gold Captain in the Ledgers.
After all, just another day of being a pirate.
Now how do I know this? Well, the answer might be closer then you think... gold is man's greatest desire.
