A Pet's Purpose

  • I had a thought and I wanted to share.
Now I know not a lot of people will see it but if you like it or have any other suggestions please let me know.

I believe that pets should be much more than a cosmetic item. I believe that pets should have utility as well as style. Here is my idea. First I want to touch on the birds.I think that birds should be a recon item. Imagine being able to send your bird out ahead of you and be able to know what lies ahead before you get there. Know if there is another ship ahead in the sea or at an island. You could send the bird out and get a lay out of an island. Basically make birds be able to do recon and have a map item in which you could look at and see what the bird saw so you know where things are on the island. Next, the monkeys. When I see the monkey I think of one thing and that is mobile storage. I think that you should be able to give the monkey an item and they can carry it. Say you have an ashen key and you want to keep onto it no matter what. This would be a way of ensuring that one small item that you deem important enough. The monkey would carry it on its back and, unless the enemy captures it or kills it, you would be able to ensure you could keep a hold of one small piece of loot.

There you go that is my idea.

    hope you enjoy.

  • @ussr-milkman This would ruin the devs principles when they started doing micro transactions which is non pay 2 win.

  • @brainlessu08 That's fair just thought it could be a cool use of the pets, perhaps it could work if they made pets purchasable with in game gold instead. I don't know but I appreciate the reply.

  • @ussr-milkman I agree this would be cool but it's just not fair for people that don't have a pet

  • Also the idea of the game was anyone can start playing at anytime and have the exact same perks as someone who's played the game since release

  • @brainlessu08 I get that balancing would be an issue. Thanks for your input!

  • @ussr-milkman Thanks for responding!

  • @ussr-milkman alternate idea for birds:
When you select an in game chat option, "Ahoy", "i see a ship", "man the cannons", etc, the bird says the phrase outloud.
This adds functionality without giving an advantage to players.

This is along with what I was thinking - more things that pets can do, but that don't necessarily break the game; like more interactive options.

  • @ussr-milkman alternate idea for monkeys:
They steal or find small trinkets around the ship and islands, but will only give it to you or another player if you offer them fruit. This could make them seem very playful as you may have a fort key on your ship that goes missing and you have to bribe your monkey to give it back to you ;)

I do not think this would be game breaking or unbalanced as you can not control when your monley takes or finds treasure. Plus it is just as likely to be yours as an enemies xD

  • @rattlyfob No. Too far.

  • @galactic-geek care to elaborate as to why its too far and or counter propose somthing.

  • This idea could work if we went down the route of a free pet.
Every ship came with a pet that you choose at load-in. Each pet has a perk,
    monkey steals;
    parrots verbally mocks enemy and calls out hidden lurkers;
cats rolled up into a ball, fired out of cannon to rip enemy sails and swipe at pirates.

  • @rattlyfob Because that's still pay to win.

@ScoobyWRX555 This is a pirate game, not a zoo. Any crew with less than 3 pirates would be at an instant disadvantage, because they wouldn't have all 3 pet types, and any crew with more than 3 pirates will have at least 1 crewmate without a pet (sans repetitive pets). Furthermore, this forces you into choosing pets for their abilities and not just because you actually like them, which actually limits choice. Even if you only allow 1 pet per crew, who would get to choose it? With differing pet abilities, some are undoubtedly going to better than others and become the pseudo-pet meta.

It's just too much, that in the end, is really just unnecessary. Besides, seeing 4 pets on a ship is already frustrating enough as is - forcing that on me would drive me nuts with all the meowing, cacawing, and ooh ooh oohs...

  • @galactic-geek grtting your own treasure moved is pay to win?

Seems like an incredibly easy way to fast travel items considering the pet teleports close to you at all times.

  • @d3adst1ck easy just set it so they can not leave an area with loot.

Cant leave your ship or an island with anything held.

Sounds easy but it isn't - pets can not be left behind currently. They need to operate around their owners.

There is also the added difficulty of being able to dismiss your pet at any time, or just log out, so items they are carrying need to be dealt with. Either the items are going to disappear or get randomly dropped wherever the pet was at the time. If they get randomly dropped, they need to be able to be dropped in a place that isn't inaccessible to players either.

It's a lot more complicated than just writing a few sentences on a forum.

  • @d3adst1ck easy:
Step 1) once a monkey has picked up a piece of treasure it will not move to a location that it can be placed on (such as the railing of a ship or in the cage)
Step 2) now that ot has the treasure it will drop it if it teleports/disappears, or if you give it a fruit in exchange.

Result: monkeys regularly move your smaller pieces of loot around the deck of your ship. Occasionally they might pick up somthing from an island and move it around.

Note: the items they can mobe are limited to the items you can place in a collector's chest.

Edit: you could even make it so they can only move treasure that is on your boat, and that you have picked up.

  • The purpose of pets is to be cute, allow you to pet them, and also to launch from cannons.

  • @mr-tickle5 one could argue that parrots talking and monkeys playing with your treasure is cute.

  • @rattlyfob Seems like a waste of development resources for a feature that is going to undo itself (the animal dropping whatever it is carrying) every time a player uses a mermaid, gets black screened, dies and goes to the ferry, leaves the ship or gets fired from a cannon.

  • @d3adst1ck not really, if you look at pets as a waste if a feature, then sure. But otherwise it becomes a cute thing that they do that does not offer an unfair advantage to those who bought pets.

    Fixed that for you. 😉

  • @ussr-milkman as with all the posts that have come before in the same topic.... NO. The devs have made it absolutely clear that pets and anything else in the emporium is 100% cosmetic only. Thst way they never provide anything that could be seen as Pay-to-win

  • @ussr-milkman maybe the pet could dig but it doesn't do anything hes just digging where you dig for the looks as i don't want any pay to win mechanics added on the pets

  • @talriaen I appreciate your reply. I get what you are saying it was just a passing thought and I wanted to share. I contend that not all passing thoughts are gold.

  • @jollyolsteamed That's fair and I like your response.

  • I agree with the pets need more... But have to tread lightly and make sure it doesn't in any way make a "pay to win" scenario...
I was thinking instead of a utility. Make them entertainment... Make them have the ability to maybe play a"coconut shell" game... This doesn't create any advantage, but could be used for anything the player wants.

  • @dafowlhunter Great Idea!
